British Noise Machine HECK Produces Dynamite Drones in Belgium…

LiveBlgLo

HECK are an Ear-Deafening-Noisy-And-Inexhaustible-Energetic-Beyond-Belief-Hardcore-Four-Piece out of Nottingham (UK) formerly know as ‘Baby Godzilla’ until a Japanese cinema giant, owner of the ‘Godzilla’ brand, recently forced the group to change their name. I never heard of them until I found out they were billed to play (last Sunday, July 26) one of my favorite hometown clubs: Charlatan in Ghent, Belgium. I clicked on the YouTube-link on the club’s website and this headbutt came my way…

I couldn’t resist to experience in the flesh this kind of Diabolic Power and Splattering Hardcore Trash exploding in my surroundings so I headed towards the Charlatan. Shortly before the gig the band was still recovering from a very short sleep (after a gig in Sheffield the day before) and… a football game (yes, they’re British) on a square in the city of Ghent. But a bit later after a 30-seconds cymbal intro (!)… a Smoking Hot Volcano exploded merciless and both their vocalists/guitarists Matt Reynolds and Jonny Hall started their marathon across the venue. They ran ceaselessly up and down the stage an did a lot of eye-to-eye-meet-and-greets with heated spectators along the way. They climbed on anything that toke them higher (literally) while screaming, barking, shouting and torturing their guitars…

Jesus Ramone…

Reynolds is as tall as Joey Ramone and looks like Jesus Christ Fronting A Death Metal Choir and Hall is the most athletic guitar playing climber I ever saw. It’s a miracle that nobody got hurt, especially when they hit the venue’s ceiling…

Best view in the venue…

Meanwhile you actually felt the band’s concrete breaking hardcore drones go through your bones in your hyperkinetic shaking body. Exorcism Night ! Perfect ! On stage, bass player Paul Shelley and drummer Tom Marsh had all the room to produce and assist their haywire party pals in the erratic crowd with Supersonic Speed Whacks. Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fastest band of them all? Bloody HECK is !

As you can read on their twitter account they eat death for breakfast and have sex for dinner and they sing about it, but trust me, these are four regular guys ! They just have an appetite for Extreme Loud Havoc (and sex and death) and are turning into Thunderous Demon Hunters from the moment they see a podium to jump on (and off). They give the audience their last drop of blood, their unfailing energy and a piece of their innermost psyche. They are for real. That Japanese cinema giant has the money and the power to take their name, but he will never ever be able to take their soul ! The Baby Monster Is Dead, Long Live HECK !…

Not looking back in anger…

So far the band released 3 EPs (check their website): Npag (2010), Oche (2012) and Knockout Machine (2015). They hope to release an album, DIY style, as soon as possible…
