Legendary new wave band BLONDIE fronted by the iconic
DEBBIE HARRY released their debut single X OFFENDER on 17th June 1976, forty years ago today. Wow, time flies at a supersonic speed! The song, originally titled ‘Sex Offender’, was written by the New York band’s bass player Gary Valentine about an 18-year-old boy being arrested for having sex with his younger girlfriend but Debbie Harry changed the lyrics so that the song was about a prostitute being attracted to the police officer that apprehended her. ‘X Offender’ was the lead single of their sparkling eponymous debut LP released in December of the same year. Commercially it failed to score but it was the start of a long, brilliant career of one of the most remarkable bands in pop history. Here’s that organ driven pearl…
