‘Digital’ by JOY DIVISION

I have just finished reading Unknown Pleasures – Inside Joy Division , a splendid book by co-founder and superb bassist Peter Hook. Great read, awesome band. And of course
it evoked an irresistible urge to play some of their impactful music again, for the millionth time. Starting with the overwhelming song DIGITAL, one of their early tracks that turned me into the Manchester legends instantly. A monstrous bass riff and hyperkinetic beat to break steel with. The late, fabulous Ian Curtis seemed to fight a dangerously growing fear of social claustrophobia. Paranoid lyrics. It felt and, yes weirdly enough, still feels like he wanted to crush his anger with intense force, not wanting to give up. Desperate dynamite. Stroke of genius…
