20 March 2020
Today 30 years ago, on 20 March 1990, the wonderful, outspoken, controversial and emotive Irish singer SINEAD O’CONNOR released her second, breakthrough LP ‘I DO
NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN’T GOT’. Together with her splendid 1994 album Universal Mother the best work she ever accomplished. A highly emotional record filled with heart and soul-touching beauties. and of course, her affecting biggest hit single ever, her cover of Prince of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ which also turned the longplayer into a mega-seller.
Rolling Stone wrote: “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got is less about O’Connor’s ambitions than the cost of those ambitions, and in almost every regard, it is an even better record than her first. The album seems the work of a transformed woman — someone who has put aside much of the anger and confusion that fueled her earlier songs and has found a hard-earned measure of spiritual happiness.” Full review here. Score: 4.5/5.
