Gripping Stories About Suffering And Surviving – Songsmith OLI SPLEEN Opens Up On ‘STILL LIFE’

14 April 2022

Who: Music project of Darryl W. Bullock
based in Brighton, UK

New album: STILL LIFE

His fourth album, based in part on his experiences of nearly
dying of AIDS-related complications in the summer of 2000.

Oli Spleen: “The album is dark, mysterious and wonderfully atmospheric.
Ten years ago when I was in Paris finalising my debut solo album “Fag Machine”,
I would not have believed that ten years on I’d be five albums in.”

Cover artwork: The cover art is a painting by Sara Abbott of a baby albatross,
dead from plastic consumption. Based on a photograph by Clare Fackler (NOAA
Office of National Marine Sanctuaries
). In seafaring folklore, it is thought that he
who kills the albatross will be cursed. This image reflects how we as a species are
dooming ourselves and future generations in our relationship to the environment.

Turn Up the Volume: Oftenly, hard times can be an artistic inspiration for
musicians (for all sorts of artists, actually). It can work or not for the psyche
of the listener. Here it works magnificently.

Spleen constructed 10 sonic paintings about his struggle for life, about
soul-destroying and physical pain, and doubts about the present and
the future.

10 heartfelt, tender and very intimate ballads, at times distressing, at times mournful,
but in the end there’s hope, redemption and lust for life. Spleen‘s voice is both doleful
and warm, just like star crooners such as Nick Cave, Father John Misty and The National‘s maestro Matt Berninger sound. Trust me, that gripping. Ten pearls about suffering and surviving. A poignant and riveting work. Don’t miss it.

Relax, sit down and enjoy.

Out Of The Blue Grunge Supergroup 3RD SECRET Released Their Lukewarm Debut Longplayer

14 April 2022

(Cover Art: Tim Gabor)

Members of the three biggest grunge bands
ever, formed a supergroup called 3RD SECRET.

The members are Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil, and Pearl Jam/Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron and also Bubba DuPree, guitarist from early-’80s DC hardcore band Void, and vocalists Jennifer Johnson and Jillian Raye, both of whom are in Novoselic’s other band Giants In The Trees.

(Photograph by Mike Hipple)

TUTV: Out of the blue 3rd Secret dropped their self-titled debut LP on the Internet. And? It’s a lukewarm affair. A messy retro collection of power ballads, Led Zep and Sabbath riffs, and 80s hard rock. Pretty heavy here and there, but too many fillers.

NME: “The surprise debut album from 3rd Secret sounds
subdued and uninspired, two things that grunge never was.”

They recently played their first show in Seattle.
Here’s a photo of that gig by Tony Drovetto.

Goofy And Rude Pop Bliss – WET LEG Hype Released Their Self-Titled Debut Album

12 April 2022

Who: Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers
from England’s Isle Of Wight.

Rhian Teasdale: “Wet Leg is sad music for party people, and party music
for sad people. It is cathartic and joyful and punk and scuzzy and above all,
it’s fun. Wet Leg was originally just supposed to be funny. As a woman, there’s
so much put on you, in that your only value is how pretty or cool you look. But
we want to be goofy and a little bit rude. We want to write songs that people
can dance to. And we want to people to have a good time, even if that might
not possible all of the time.”

New album: WET LEG – self-titled debut LP
Released: 8 April 2022 – order info here

The Telegraph (British newspaper): “It is an absolute blast, a crunchy, punchy, smart, deliciously goofy charge through new wave pop rock. It bursts with earworm hooks, snappy choruses and the delightful sense that the duo at its heart are having such a hoot they don’t really care what anyone else thinks. “ Score: 4/5.

Turn Up The Volume: These ladies’ pop vision is refreshing and most welcome in these grim times. Expect twist and turn tunes, hilarious deadpan stories, and some drop-dead-cool attitude. As the ladies say themselves we’re ‘goofy and rude‘. Hurrah!

10 April 2022

Who: The musical vehicle for artist
Michael Wynn out of Toronto, Ontario.

Released: 6 April 2022 – more info here.

Michael Wynn: “Cheer For The Deer is a metaphor for humanity, it follows the story of a deer being oblivious to the fact that it’s being hunted, and not knowing that it could be its last day of life. Ultimately, it is about the hope of survival, rooting for the underdog and never giving up.”

Turn Up The Volume: Expect 40 minutes of electro-pop spiritedness, 40 minutes of synth thrills with different textures, different vibes, different moods, different orchestrations. Let it all sink in a couple of times so your ears can discover all the twist and turn dynamics at work here. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Smells Like Saturday Night Fever Spirit At The Hot WARMDUSCHER Spot

7 April 2022

Who: Steamy post-punk-funk
misfits coming out of London

New album: AT THE HOT SPOT – their 4th full lenght
Out: 1 April 2022 – more info here

Bella Union (new label):“Written over a period of over a year in lockdown, At the Hotspot, produced by Joe Goddard and Al Doyle of Hot Chip, takes the raucous energy Warmduscher solidified on their critically acclaimed 2019 release Tainted Lunch, and injects it with a slightly more polished, ‘80s funk sound, kind of like stumbling home to your squatted loft after a drunken night at the local disco. It’s crunchy on the outside, smooth on the inside, and might
be the most immediately enjoyable music Warmduscher have ever graced us with.

DIY Magazine says: At the heart of ‘At the Hotspot’, though, is a reminder that for all of their eccentricities, Warmduscher remain a tight garage-rock outfit – just one that isn’t afraid to wander down some stylistic rabbit holes. Score: 8/10.

Turn Up The Volume: I think a Saturday Warmduscher Fever Night evolves like this. It starts with sensual foreplay ambiance and a couple of drinks at the bar (Live At The Hotspot / Hot Shot / Super Cool), continues with a trio of temperature-boosters (Fatso / Five Star Rated / Double Vision) and then explodes into a fuckin’ Sly Stone orgasm riot with Eight Minute Machine , Twitchin’ In The Kitchen and Double Vision. Afterward, you can relax with a tasty cigarette (Greasin’ Up Jesus). How was it for you?

Swedish Darkwave Outfit PRINCIPE VALIENTE Turns Up The Bright Lights On New Album ‘BARRICADES’

4 April 2022

Who: Swedish darkwave outfit
by top vox Fernando Honorato

New album: BARRICADES – 4th longplayer
Released via Metropolis Records – 18 March

Press info: Barricades is an album deeply affected by the Corona pandemic.
Most of the songs have been recorded from home with the members recording
their individual contributions alone. This has given the album a special, almost
thoughtful, atmosphere.

(Press photo via Metropolis Records)

Fernando Honorato: “I’ve had more time to reflect freely both in terms of lyrics
and recording, I’ve been able to try different ways. In the end, I knew exactly what
I was doing with the vocals. There are more ideas coming together now.

Everyone has added their different perspectives to the songs and it’s much more of a collaboration together with Jimmy during the songwriting. Our records never turn out
the way we imagine them when we start working, but I’m very happy with Barricades.
It feels like it’s the best album we’ve done so far.”

Turn Up The Volume: Expect scintillating New Order synth-pop sparks (So Much More), Interpol’s hypnotic guitar romanticism, and its frontman Paul Banks‘ mesmeric vocal timbre (Porcelain / Tears In Different Corners / Never Change / When We Can’t Let Go) and some dark shoe-gazy waves (Barricades / I Am You / The Impossibles).

Overall the sonic colors change from light dark to pitch black.
It’s a gloomy 2022 so far. Now is the time to turn up the bright lights.
Principe Valiente know exactly how to switch them on.

Groovy Bass Funk And Sultry Saxiness – Here’s The Brand New Dancefloor LP ‘THE LEATHER LEMON’ By Brooklyn Act P.E.

On Turn Up The Volume’s stereo today

27 March 2022

Band: P.E.
Who: Funky team from Brooklyn, US

Press info: “ This sophomore album, The Leather Lemon, ushers in a new era
for the New York band. A wild ride through chewy bubblegum pop, sweeping synthetic orchestrations, and mutant club beats, the album slides ever closer to the fully-realized
pop sensibility only winked at with their debut album Person (2020) and subsequent

Turn Up The Volume: Expect groovy bass funk, sultry sax flashes (I thought,
instantly, of saxophonist Andy Mackay from legends Roxy Music), seductive vocals
and most importantly tantalizing tunes (Blue Nude / Contradiction Of Wants / New
Kind Of Zen,
and The Reason For My Love). And P.E. mix it all the right sparkling way,
with vivid verve, effervescent effect and synth waves. I’m quite sure that their fellow townsmen/women Bodega and Gustaf live around the corner.

If you want to take a break from spinning yourself dizzy then moody and jazzy pieces
like The Leather Lemon, Tears In The Rain and Majesty will calm you down. And for fans
of sound wizard Aphex Twin bizarre track 86ed will satisfy them. Lyrically, it is mostly
about relationship-related reflections and some enigma here and there. Check
these lines…

French kiss to keep the peace,
French fuck to keep the peace!

Sweet Acid in the wound, suck on it.
Leather Lemon, Strawberry Cut.
Leather Lemon, Let’s stay all day in bed!

Out of tune and muddled,
forgive the band.
Bleached bones of trouble,
lost in the grass.

I don’t want that life.
I don’t want that majesty.
I don’t want that life.
I don’t want a tragedy.

BODEGA – Put On Your Blue Suede Post-Punk Shoes And Pirouette Yourself Dizzy With Their 2nd Album ‘BROKEN EQUIPMENT’

23 March 2022

Who: Indie team from New York that scored
one of the best albums of 2018 with their cracking
debut Endless Stroll.

Out: 11 March 2022 – order info here.

Album info: Inspired by a book club. In the early months of 2020, the Brooklyn
art-punk incendiaries gathered together with close friends to study the works of a
wide range of philosophers. Passionate debates lasting long into the night became
a regular occurrence, motivating the band to become as ideologically unified as the
weighty tomes they were reading. Broken Equipment is Bodega’s attempt to interrogate
the external factors that make them who they are, propelling existential quandaries
with tongue-in-cheek humour, highly personal lyrics, and irresistible grooves.

The female Bodega voice

NME says: “The New York band’s second album sees their wiry, sceptical post-punk slowly giving way to warmer, more romantic ideas… For a band with complex philosophies and
critical theories to burn, BODEGA’s most vital moments come when they lower their guard
down and just let it all out.”
Full review here . Score: 4/5.

Turn Up The Volume: The New Yorkers still operate on Parquet Courts
playground (not a bad thing), but here on their second full length they funk-up
their post-punk disco beats, they turn up the temperature and they activate every
muscle and every nerve in your itching body even more than on their debut LP.
A fucktastic touchdown!

Welsh Heroes FEEDER Shoot Loud And Clear On New 11th Album ‘TORPEDO’

22 March 2022

Who: Welsh rockers who started their journey in 1994
and produced 11 studio albums (including the new one)

New album: TORPEDO
Released: 18 March 2022 via Big Teeth Music
Order info: here

LOUDER THAN WAR says: “Written and recorded remotely during the darkest days
of lockdown, it’s shot through with a paranoiac sense of urgency. Packed with musical
curve balls – a gnarly title track slaloms from thrash dirge to stadium anthem, the album’s
redemptive mode is summed up by The Healing, a Britpop-meets-grunge banger that serves
as a reminder that Feeder are still at their peak.”
Score: 4/5.

Turn Up The Volume: Big, melodious tunes shot through a giant cannon towards
your Herculean-rock addicted ears. Loud and clear as we know the restless Welsh
rockin’ heroes. A holy bloody magnum record!

Singles/clips: Torpedo / Magpie / Wall Of Silence

Grant Nicholas (frontman: “We are really looking forward to going out on the road again and playing the new album material. This will be the heaviest Feeder set we’ve played in a while so can’t wait. We may revisit some heavier old school Feeder classics also and touch on some Renegades and All Bright electric stuff.”

German Songstress ANIQO Impresses With Her New Poignant Album – From ‘BIRTH’ To Rebirth

21 March 2022

Artist: ANIQO
Who: Anita Goß aka ANIQO comes from deep family roots in Wismar (Germany)
on the Baltic coast. She bridges the gap between today’s indie, rock & pop and
the best of the post-punk and new wave era.

New album: BIRTH

“BIRTH stands at the beginning of everything that started 6 years ago as ANIQO.
It’s not only a personal liberation but also a message to face life with hope: “I decided
I didn’t want to be in the darkness anymore. I want to be in the light. I want to hope.
I want to get back up after the deep pain. So I direct the glimpse of hope out of the
darkness – into the light!”

Turn Up The Volume: You’ll feel shivers going down your spine
on several occasions on this wholehearted album with cathartic
musings like Birth, Go On and The Sea.

Her touching and expressive voice balances somewhere between
the vulnerable, nicotine-injected timbre of Marianne Faithfull ((Deep
Sea Fish / Balance
) and the gripping poignancy of PJ Harvey (Vivre
Libre / Love Life

Masterly songwriting all the way.

Aniqo re-experiences her destressing turmoil of the past, but looks
forward to that liberating light at the end of a long tunnel. From birth
to rebirth. A spellbinding and spiritual record.

Singles (and flabbergasting clips): Vivre Libre / Balance /
Fear / Deep Sea Fish / Must Surrender
