Who: Sydney-based band made of five friends
from Australia, the United States and Canada
Influences: The National, The 1975 and Kings of
Leon, with elements of Bruce Springsteen and
U2’s enrapturing storytelling
New single: SLOW DOWN
Great piece from their upcoming EP
“The song narrates a struggling relationship, the tension surrounding conflict and striving
for repair. Touching on the differences of two individuals, the song speaks of love, patience
and tolerance, sonically building throughout and reflecting the tension in the relationship.
The relatable track navigates the need to resolve and repair the miscommunication between two lovers, which is a result of their unspoken issues and individual contrasts.”
Turn Up The Volume: It’s been a while since I heard an epic belter that evokes
an image on the screen in my head of a massive stadium filled with a sea of people holding their phones up with shining lights and scream at the top of their lungs.
This powerful love ballad starts tenderly with piano and acoustic guitar and affective vocals but slowly but surely the passion, the fervor and the overall orchestration grows towards an orgiastic peak with glowing guitar ardency and a vocally pumped-up
chorus before closing with a hushed outro.
To those who perceive this bittersweet symphony as too soft: get real and show your emotions, it won’t hurt. Coldplay‘s maestro Chris Martin will envy the anthemic force of
this sonic standout. One message to Moonwod: when you play Slow Down live make it
last for at least 10 minutes.

Anniversary album: SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE – his 18th LP
Released: 28 September 1976 – 45 years ago
Pitchfork: “Songs in the Key of Life” was the culmination of a historic period of creativity
for Stevie Wonder. Its ambition and scope were unprecedented, and he never approached
its caliber or impact again… The album—two LPs plus an additional four-song EP—was the culmination of a historic period of creativity, a concentrated burst of music matched only by a handful of artists (mid-’60s Bob Dylan, early ’70s Rolling Stones, ’80s Prince). Its ambition and scope were unprecedented, its power and resonance were timeless—and when it was done, he never approached its caliber or impact again.” Full review here. Score: 10/10.
Turn Up The Volume: Michael Jackson called himself
the King of Pop, but Stevie Wonder is the King of Soul.

Band: THE CRAYON SET
Who: Dublin based outfit
producing hook-filled alt pop
New album: DOWNER DISCO – 3rd LP
Released: 24 September 2021
The band: “The album explores a happy-sad dynamic – we’re always trying to write & record the perfect pop song but lyrically the songs couldn’t help but reflect the increasingly stressed-out world we breathe in every day. So that’s where the album title came from – the idea of sad bangers, melody with melancholy, downer disco. In terms of the disco thing, it is a bit tongue-in-cheek but we did incorporate more electronic elements and we wanted to get people dancing more.”
Turn Up The Volume: Dream pop at its titillating best. Instantly sticking tunes,
scintillating guitars, crystal voices (female/male), and gripping Belle & Sebastian
wistfulness all over the place.
Although the songs are not really about the birds and the bees, but rather a worrying reflection on our troubled times, you can’t but hum along or sing along or whistle along. This is exactly what pop-ular music is all about.
Totally 2021 melancholia. Hopeful but with realistic considerations. For my state of what about tomorrow mind this is a perfect record. Seeing a bright light at the end of the tunnel, but hoping that it’s not a runaway train. I know it’s a cliché, but so accurate this time. No fillers, only 9 killers. Prove me wrong. Anyway, The Crayon Set don’t need to be rock stars
to write moving heart and soul gems. A mesmerizing pleasure.

Artist: LOVE ITOYA
Who: A 24-year R&B/Soul Greek Nigerian singer, songwriter,
performer, dancer, artist, born and raised in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Itoya: “Introduction” was written by my true life experiences and
also has a message of empowerment and advice to the world.”
Turn Up The Volume: Itoya is a natural-born singer and entertainer. Her glorious soul voice – think Béyonce and Neneh Cherry (yes that good) -sounds so spirited, so brisk, so
real and human that your stream of adrenalin explodes and euphoria takes over. Her 6-track debut EP couldn’t have come at a better time. After about 18 freedom-limiting and depressing months – we can dance in the streets again, side by side.
Finally, we can enjoy life again while swaying and swinging our hips to this exotic R&B jamboree injected with reggae sparks (Pepper Dam / Real Love), Motown inspired disco fervor (Ups & Downs) and passionate, mixed emotions (Consideration, with a flashy guitar solo, should be a hit worldwide)). All irresistible tunes, richly orchestrated and greatly arranged. And yes, Love Itoya looks totally gorgeous. What an introduction!

Band: DURAN DURAN (Birmingham, UK)
Active: Since 1978 / 14 studio albums so far
New single: TONIGHT UNITED
The 4th shared cut of the new LP, produced by the
world-famous Italian composer Moroder
Simon Le Bon: “Giorgio Moroder, Duran Duran… this
is music for a world that’s coming back together,”
Giorgio Moroder must be a great fan of Duran Duran in the 80s when
they scored hit after hit, as they sound exactly the same in 2021.
