Album Tracks That Should Have Been Singles – ‘YOU TALK WAY TOO MUCH’ (2003) By THE STROKES

5 December 2024

Album: ROOM ON FIRE
Their second one, released
in 2003

Track: YOU TALK WAY TOO MUCH

5-star jangly stroke.

[Verse 1]
Now we’re out of time
I said it’s my fault, it’s my fault
Can’t make good decisions
It won’t stop, I can’t stop

[Pre-Chorus]
Give me some time, I just need a little time
Give me some time, I just need a little time

[Chorus]
You talk way too much
You talk way too much
It’s only the end
It’s only the end, hey

[Verse 2]
We don’t get the news
He says why not? Why not?
Forget what you heard
‘Cause it won’t stop, it won’t stop

[Pre-Chorus]
Give ’em some time, they just need a little time
Give ’em some time, they just need a little time

[Chorus]

You talk way too much
You talk way too much
It’s only the end
It’s only the end as you know it

[Outro]
“You’re not supposed to say that
You taught me too much”
Is this how it ends?
Is this how it ends?

Album Tracks That Should Have Been Singles – ‘TOO HOT’ (1979) By Ska Legends THE SPECIALS

1 December 2024

Band: THE SPECIALS

Probably the greatest ska collective ever.
They formed in Coventry, England in 1977,
and were fronted by the late great
Terry Hall (1959-2022).

Album: THE SPECIALS

Their self-titled debut LP, released
in 1979. It peaked at #4 in the UK.

Track: TOO HOT

A song written, by Jamaican star Prince Buster. Catchy, hip-swaying
tune. I guess because Hall was only doing backing vocals here that
Too Hot wasn’t hot enough to be a single.

Their second one. Released in 1983. Along
with Low-Life my favourite NO LP.

Track: YOUR SILENT FACE

The melodramatic synths, Bernard Sumner‘s dreamy vocals
and melodic melodica, Hooky‘s atmospheric bass moments.
All ingredients for a single are present here in this glistening
pearl of a tune.

PUBLIC IMAGE LTD Released Their Outlandish Masterpiece ‘METAL BOX’ 45 Years Ago

Back in time

24 November 2024

45 years ago, on 23 November 1979, PUBLIC IMAGE LTD better known as PiL released their second album titled METAL BOX. One of the most inventive, bold and middle-finger-to-the-musicbiz album of the so-called post-punk era. A masterpiece in many ways, even
in its way of packaging, as it came out as 3 x 12″ 45rpm records in a tin film canister.

The core’s band consisting of former Sex Pistol John Lydon, ace guitarist Keith Levene and equally ace bassist Jah Wobble didn’t give a flying fuck about what sort of music was hip or not, popular or not at the time. On the contrary, it was like they tried really hard to make a record that was unsalable. Respect!

No Sex Pistols Mark II (although later Lydon turned into Rotten again in order to cash in with the original Pistols. Well, aren’t they all the same?). Levene‘s metallic and wayward guitar sound was essential to Pil‘s far out and radical sonority, but it was Wobble‘s mighty wall-of-dub-bass resonance and Lydon‘s mostly wailing vocals and his dark stories/lyrics that made this whole unorthodox and outlandish noise enterprise freakishly perfect.

SINGLES: Death Disco / Memories

AllMusic wrote: “PiL managed to avoid boundaries for the first four years of their existence, and Metal Box is undoubtedly the apex. It’s a hallmark of uncompromising, challenging post-punk, hardly sounding like anything of the past, present, or future.” Full review here.

PEARL JAM Released Their 3rd Album ‘VITALOGY’ 30 Years Ago Today

Back in time

22 November 2024

Grunge rock titans PEARL JAM fronted by Eiffel Tower voice Eddie Vedder
released their 3rd LP VITALOGY on 22 November 1994, today 30 years ago.

The record has been identified as a punk rock album by both critics and members
of the band, departing the grunge sound of the band’s previous work. Many of the
songs on the album address the pressures of fame and dealing with the resulting
loss of privacy.

The album’s title Vitalogy, which literally means “the study of life”,
came from an early 20th-century medical book that Vedder found
at a garage sale.

It hit the top spot in the US, Australia, Ireland, Sweden
and New Zealand. It peaked at #4 in the UK.

Rolling Stone said: “A wildly uneven and difficult record, sometimes maddening, sometimes ridiculous, often powerful. Vitalogy has a number of gripping songs that match the soaring anthems of Ten, the extended grooves of Vs. or the poetry of either record.” Score: 4/5.

15 November 2024

Band: NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS

Album: DIG, LAZARUS, DIG!!!
Their 14th, released in 2008.

Track: TODAY’S LESSON
Could have been a track of
Cave‘s side-project Grinderman‘s
debut LP.

Lyrics

Little Janie she wakes up from a dream
a gun like a jawbone down the waistband of her jeans
mr Sandman can recite today’s lesson in his sleep
he says
(there oughta be a law against me going down on the street)
little Janie pipes up & she says!!!!!

we’re GONNA HAVE A REAL COOL TIME TONITE!!!!
down the back of Janie’s jeans she had the jawbone of an ass
mr Sandman runs around the corner
trying to head her off at the pass
he sticks his head over the fence and yells
something way too fast
(it’s today’s lesson)
something about the
CORRUPTION OF THE WORKING CLASS!!!!

little Janie wakes up on the floor & she says!!!!
we’re GONNA HAVE A REAL COOL TIME TONITE!!!!
(Janie says we are all such a crush of want half-mad w/ loss we are
violated in our sleep & we weep & we toss & we turn & we
burn we are
hypnotised we are cross-eyed we are pimped we are bitched we are told
such monstrous lies—)

Janie wakes up & she says
we’re GONNA HAVE A REAL COOL TIME TONITE!!!!
mr. Sandman has a certain appetite for Janie in repose
he digs her pretty knees & that she is completely naked
underneath all her clothes
he likes to congregate around the intersection of Janie’s jeans
mr. Sandman the inseminator

opens her up like a love-letter & enters her dreams

little Janie wakes up & she says!!!!
we’re GONNA HAVE A REAL good TIME TONITE!!!!
o yeah little Janie wakes up & she says!!!!
we’re GONNA HAVE A REAL good TIME TONITE!!!!
TONITE!!!! TONITE!!!! TONITE!!!!! CMON!!!!
CMON!!!!
CMON!!!!
CMON!!!!!
CMON!!!!!!!
