FOR NINA – Irish Indie Trio Test Your Speakers’ Flexibilty With New Single ‘HOUNDS’

New striking strokes

21 April 2025

Band: FOR NINA
Who: Irish indie trio that met in college in 2023, and quickly found common ground through a shared love of alternative rock and melding contrasting musical ideas.

New single: HOUNDS

“The track came out of nothing really. We were just jamming out over the main riff and
then everything seemed to click and within half-an-hour we had the song. We wrote the
chorus in a way that hopefully highlights the uncertain chaos of being ‘twenty-something.

We were in a tricky place with our college course at the time and the feelings manifested themselves within the song. At least those feelings led to something good!”

TUTV: Hounds opens with a roasting riff that boggles your mind and head on the spot. Immediately followed by poised vocalist Holly Owens and before you can say “the Pope
is dead
” all hell breaks loose with a whopping wall-of-drums-bashing sound explosion.

This staggering rollercoaster process repeats itself a couple of times, testing
your speakers’ flexibility. These 20-something Irish dogs make a loud and clear
mark. You know where the repeat button is.

BLONDSHELL Charms With Melancholic Musing ’23’S A BABY’

New striking strokes

6 April 2025

Artist: BLONDSHELL
Who: Moniker of L.A. songstress
Sabrina Mae Teitelbaum.

Track: 23’S A BABY
Third shared psingle from her upcoming, 2nd LP,
named If You Asked For A Picture. It’ll be out on
May 2.

Blondshell: “The song is partially about being in your twenties and feeling like you’re
supposed to know everything (your parents even had kids around that age!) yet you’re
truly in the weeds trying to figure out who you are. I wanted it to have a bit of a nursery
rhyme feel. It’s a heavy subject so it was important to have fun when we made it.”

Melancholic musing.

New striking strokes

23 March 2025

Scottish pop-rock-folk band THE WATERBOYS orchestrated
by Mike Scott told us at the start of 2025, that they canned
their 16th longplayer.

A sort of concept one, glorifying the late notorious actor Dennis Hopper.
It is named Life, Death and Dennis Hopper and features guests Bruce
Springsteen, Steve Earle, Fiona Apple
and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes.

Release date: 4 April.

Album artwork

Following marvellous songs Hopper’s On Top (Genius), Andy (A Guy Like You)
and I Don’t How I Made It Scott presents another beauty with torch ballad
LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN GIRLFRIEND.

It features American songstress Fiona Apple, who covered The Waterboys‘ signature
tune ‘The Whole Of The Moon’ in 2019 for TV Show The Affair, in a stupendous vocal duet with Scott. Wowzers. What a stupefying performance.

BRYAN FERRY And AMELIA BARRATT Share Magnetizing Title Track Of Their Upcoming Album ‘LOOSE TALK’

New striking strokes

16 March 2025

As announced late January, former Roxy Music luminary BRIAN FERRY (79 now) and Scottish artist/writer/painter AMELIA BARRATT teamed up for an album, titled LOOSE TALK. It lands on March 28.

Album artwork

Ferry: “The whole experience of making Loose Talk has had an interesting newness about
it. It seems to have opened a whole new chapter in my work. There’s a really strong mood
to the work that Amelia does and I was very conscious of not getting in the way of her words. Hopefully, together, we’ve created something neither could do on our own.

The nearest I ever got to doing pieces like this before would maybe be back in Roxy with
“In Every Dream Home A Heartache” and “Mother Of Pearl.” To some extent, those are
kind of spoken monologues.”

Barratt: “Loose Talk is a conversation between two artists: a collaborative album of music
by Bryan Ferry with spoken texts by me. It’s cinematic; music put to pictures. There’s possibility for experimentation within a frame. And there’s a freedom in knowing exactly what my part to play is, then being able to pass a baton, stretching out creatively and knowing there is someone on the other side to take it further. Nothing feels off limits.”

With LOOSE TALK, the title track, we get a third
preview, following Florist and Orchestra.

It resonates like, yes, a Roxy Music groove with Barratt (who reminds me
of Laurie Anderson here) + telling a story all over it. Magnetizing stuff.

MATT BERNINGER Surprises With New Upbeat Solo Single ‘BONNET OF PINS’

New striking strokes

14 March 2025

It’s already 5 years since The National maestro MATT BERNINGER released
his praised solo debut album Serpentine Prison. The LP was recorded with
the legendary musician/producer Booker T. Jones.

But finally the Cincinnati crooner returns with a follow-up.
New album Get Sunk will see the day of light on May 30.
More info here.

Press info: ‘Get Sunk, is not an autobiographical album, but the narrator is processing how he became himself. Who is he compared to the kid on that sepia-toned farm? What
is his idea of happiness? What the hell are we all searching for? Get Sunk is an ode to the infinite. The others that make us who we are; the possibilities our paths can take and the abyss of both misery and bliss.’

Matt: “Our hearts are like old wells filled with pennies and worms. I can’t resist
going down to the bottom of mine to see what else is there. But sometimes you
can get yourself stuck.”

First single BONNET OF PINS is a surprisingly upbeat tune.
Something we rarely hear from Berninger. And it feels good,
really good.

SUNFLOWER BEAN – Sultry Guitar-Pop Trio Shares New Track ‘NOTHING ROMANTIC’ From Their Upcoming 4th Album

New striking strokes

13 March 2025

New album artwork

Last September New York City‘s glamorous guitar-pop trio
SUNFLOWER BEAN dropped a 5-track EP, named SHAKE.

This year they go for another full length. Their 4th, named
Mortal Primetime. It’ll land on April 25th. More info here.

Following bubbling lead single Champagne Taste our ears can absorb
a follow-up preview with the moodier amplified 80s flavoured musing
NOTHING ROMANTIC.

SB: “Nothing Romantic” is about rejecting the myth of the tortured artist—realizing that
the joys of creativity don’t have to come from the lows of misery. The video mirrors this journey, capturing our lives as touring musicians in between nightmarish performances. From green rooms to lost highways, we travel from town to town, feeling alive only in the escape of our show. There’s tension between the connection and solitude; on stage, we’re together, sharing our music with others but later isolation and the price of our sacrifices creep in.”

BRYAN ADAMS – Canadian Rock Old-Timer Strikes Again With New Firecracker ‘MAKE UP YOUR MIND’

9 March 2025

A month ago, 65-year-old Canadian rocker BRYAN ADAMS announced the making
of a new album, named Roll With The Punches (no release date known so far) and
gave us a first preview with the badass title track. And here comes taster #2, titled
MAKE UP YOUR MIND. A second dynamizing flap.

Never thought I would write about Bryan Adams (a bit too corporate for my liking), let alone twice and probably a third time when the new LP finally arrives. But my ears got excited, so there you go.

Punch it, Bryan.
