Irish indie heroes FONTAINES D.C. are climbing higher and higher up the rock
star ladder after releasing their 4th LP Romance, which got raving reviews.
To keep the momentum going, they’re on the road (probably for a year
or two) and just shared a new video for BUG, one of the album’s singles.
The clip was directed by Andrea Arnold (American Honey, Fish Tank), who has
a new drama movie out this Friday, titled Bird. The video is billed as “a short
form reimagination” of the film.
Legends R.E.M. shared a lyric video for their jangly songI BELIEVE from their
1986 LPLifes Rich Pageant along with their message for the American people
to go out and vote tomorrow.
Stipe has been open about his endorsement of Kamala Harris,
performing at a recent campaign concert for the presidential
candidate.
“I believe the choices in this election could not be more stark or more important.
Please vote and encourage everyone you know to do the same, that is how we win
in 2024 and I believe we can do it!!!”.
The new video clip is inspired by Stipe drawings he had
handmade during their Fables and Reconstruction tour.
Last September, Liverpool‘s psych-folk-pop-rock ramblers The Coral
released one of the best LPs of 2023 with Sea Of Mirrors. Second best
in Turn Up The Volume‘s end-of-the-year-list. On the same day they dropped
a 2nd one, named HOLY JOE’S ISLAND MEDICINE SHOW
For the latter’s standout track THE SINNER the band
just shared an enigmatic video. Watch below.
James Skelly (frontman) about the song: “I was trying to imagine Calm With Horses as a noir with a soundtrack by a nameless Merseybeat
group that only exists in a half forgotten dream.”
TUTV about the song: If David Lynch would make a Spaghetti Western then
this sweet little pearl should be on the soundtrack. I’m sure he would like
it for the melancholic vibe, the ghostly sinner (his favorite sinner) and for
the echoing guitar sparks, thinking that it’s a song by romantic rockabilly
legend Chris Isaak (note: Lynch directed Isaak‘s Wicked Game video that
featured flashes from his 1990 Wild At Heart movie).
LYRICS
I go by the name of the Sinner
I move through the streets like a ghost
I used to work for the family
Now I’m running like a devil for the coast
Chorus
Do you laugh, do you cry?
Will you sing a lullaby
For the Sinner?
I’m the Sinner
A deal gone wrong, now I’m on the run
I’m leaving Dublin behind
I catch a boat at Carlingford
And sail for Liverpool tonight
Chorus
He said betrayal’s the greatest sin of all
And it’s impossible to forgive a friend
She died like silence as it falls
I loved his sister until the end
I’ll bide my time like a memory And move in the shadows like a thief One day I’ll return to the Dublin And I’ll slit their throats while they sleep
Band: THE IRRATIONAL LIBRARY Who:A Haarlem (The Netherlands) based rock band with its roots firmly planted in both
the regional and international counterculture. The Dutch-American band produces a raw,
dirty groove that is heavily influenced by icons of beat-, Provo- and punk culture.
Their new album We… Are Doomed is one of the best LPs of this (young) year. Turn Up The Volume wrote: “The rap and roll venom of Rage Against The Machine,
the fuck-you-hypocrites grimness of Black Flag, the punky saxophone of X-Ray-Spex,
the sharp poetic spit and sneer anarchy of Mark. E. Smith.”
Single/clip: THE ALGORITHM – one of the highlights of the album Who is he/she: “Director Marius Bruijn introduces us to a figure called ‘A.G. Rithm’, the personification of algorithms, digital systems and codes. He’s living as normal a life as possible. He tries to come across as a ‘regular’ person at all times, but despite his efforts, we notice he’s struggling. Especially interacting with truly alive beings turns out to be a problem. It shows how technology, with algorithms and even artificial intelligence, seems to become more and more human, but never really gets there.”
Turn Up The Volume: To be honest A.G. Rithm is a good friend of mine. Thanks to that smart and mysterious person I have 24/7 access to the greatest library in the world… the Internet. Right? On the other hand, I rather hug a real human, like my wife and my kids, instead of a PC, a smartphone, or a widescreen TV. Anyway, I like the substantive idea of this sticky and nasty bass-groove outcry and its spitting-spoken-word waterfall.
Overall (lots of more algorithms on the LP: stream/buy below) this band stands out because they care about the real social issues, the real Big Brother crimes that harm
our vulnerable minds, the real threat of a new, dangerous far-right-is-okay culture and
they embed all their anger in a sonic ass-kicking-doom-and-gloom-party katzenjammer.
Video story: In the clip, A.G. Rithm is performed by drummer Lars van der Weiden,
but with a sharp eye you’ll also spot several political cartoons by TRIK out of the book
We… Are Doomed. This way the video The Algorithm captures the world of The Irrational Library: absurdist, incredibly groovy, and at times… irrational.
Bristol fierce punks IDLES released their third LP called ULTRA MONO confirming
their status of boiling-and-sharp-mouthed in-your-face misfits.
NME‘s verdict: “The Bristol punks’ third album is a juggernaut that roars through sarcasm, defiance, compassion and controversy… Talbot and the gang have built a wall around themselves and their followers, but also spend about half the record peering over at the
hostile world outside, before lobbing a few flares in its general direction… It’s a bumpy ride,
but one worth taking… This record fuses the first album’s goofy sense of humour with ‘Joy’s’ brazen manifesto for a healthier society. Despite their imperfections and the often justified criticism, IDLES are ultimately a good thing. The band want to take you on a trip and for you
to enjoy the ride, and for the destination to be serene. Hold on tight.”

Frontman JOE TALBOT is 100% convinced that…
