R.IP. MARTIN DUFFY – Longtime Keyboardist For PRIMAL SCREAM Passed Away At 55

a

21 December 2022

Only a couple of hours after the brutal and very sad news of the passing of The SpecialsTerry Hall came another brutal and very sad message. The passing of British keyboardist Martin Duffy. He died after a brain injury following a fall at his home in Brighton. He was only 55. Rest in peace.

Duffy, born in Birmingham UK, is/was best know as the keyboardist of legendary Scottish band Primal Scream. He started his musical career as a founding member of the guitar-pop band Felt.

He joined Primal Scream in 1989. In the mid-’90s he played with The Charlatans
for a while, after the sudden eath of their young, prior keyboardist Rob Collins.

He also worked as a session musician with a cast of big rockstars such as Oasis, Beth Orton, Paul Weller, Dr. John, Heidi Berry, George Clinton, Little Barrie, and the Chemical Brothers. He released one solo album, a classical music-inspired one, titled Assorted Promenades in 2014.

Here’s a track off that album…

Here’s Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie’s tribute to Duffy:

Hard to write this. We never know how to speak around death other than polite platitudes [sic]. All I want to say is that our soul brother Martin Duffy passed away on Sunday. He suffered a brain injury due to a fall at his home in Brighton. We in Primal Scream are all so sad. I’ve known Martin since he was a teenager in Felt. He played keyboards on every album of ours from the first to the last. Finally joining the band in 1991. Martin was a very special character. He had a love and understanding of music on a deep spiritual level. Music meant everything to him. He loved literature and was well read and erudite. An autodidact. A deep thinker, curious about
the world and other cultures. Always visiting museums in every city we played or looking for Neolithic stones in remote places. Opinionated and stubborn in his views. He could play piano to the level where he was feted not just by his peers in British music, but old school master American musicians such as James Luther Dickinson, Roger Hawkins & David Hood and
producer Tom Dowd.

I witnessed a session at Abbey Rd in 1997 for a Dr John album where his record company had assembled a bunch of young Indie Brit musicians where Mac Rebenac ( Dr John ) seemed bored and uninterested in the session until Martin started playing, then suddenly the good Dr started knocking some funky piano chops and I instantly knew it was because his ears had pricked up when he heard Martin play and the session at last came alive. Martin was the most musically talented of all of us. His style combined elements of country, blues and soul, all of which he had a God-given natural feel for. He never played the same thing twice, ever. He was all about ‘the moment’, better have that ‘record’ button on when Duffy was on fire.

His timing was unique, funky and ALWAYS behind the beat. George Clinton also dug Martin. I remember a session in Chicago where George said to him ” go to church Duffy !” , and he did. Martin was also in possession of a unique wit. He had a swift eye for the absurd, the surreal and the ridiculous. He lived to laugh and play music. He was loved
by all of us in the Scream. A beautiful soul. We will miss him.

With Primal Scream

With Felt

I had the fantastic pleasure to meet Martin (second from left, next to myself) when
Primal Scream played in my hometown of Ghent (Belgium) some years ago.

R.I.P. TERRY HALL – The Voice/Face/Songwriter Off Ska Legends Death At 63

20 December 2022

Shocking news.

TERRY HALL (born Terence Edward Hall in Coventry UK), the voice/face
and co-songwriter of ska legends THE SPECIALS has passed away following
a short illness. No further details were revealed. He was only 63.

The band broke the news on their social media.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing, following a brief illness, of
Terry, our beautiful friend, brother and one of the most brilliant singers, songwriters
and lyricists this country has ever produced. He will be deeply missed by all who knew
and loved him and leaves behind the gift of his remarkable music and profound
humanity.

Terry often left the stage at the end of The Specials’ life-affirming shows with three
words…’Love Love Love’. Terry was a wonderful husband and father and one of the
kindest, funniest, and most genuine of souls. His music and his performances encapsulated
the very essence of life… the joy, the pain, the humour, the fight for justice, but mostly the love. We would ask that everyone respect the family’s privacy at this very sad time.”

Hall
also was successful with side-projects Fun Boy Three,
The Colourfield and recorded/released 3 solo LPs. Rest in peace.

R.I.P. WILKO JOHNSON (75)

23 November 2022

Sad, really sad news.

I’ll never forget the very first time I saw WILKO JOHNSON play. I was a teenager
(yes I always was a music junkie and gig addict, actually from I was 6 and discovered
The Beatles) and went with mates to London in 1976.

He blew me away with his manic, never-heard-before guitar style while running like
a madman with a stare from left to right and back on the stage of Hammersmith Odeon with rhythm & blues legends Dr. Feelogood. They just scored a no 1 hit with their awesome fuzz and buzz live album Stupidity.

Wilko (born John Peter Wilkinson in 1975 in Canvey Island, Essex, England ) was a feelgood doctor for 3 years (1974-1977) before starting his solo journey. He recorded several LPs with his band and played gigs until his last breath. Also on his shelf is the longplayer he canned with The Who‘s Roger Daltrey (‘Going Back Home‘ – 2014)

In 2013 he broke the news that he had terminal cancer and went on a farewell tour.
But after a couple of gigs, he had to call it a day due to his devastating condition.

Sometime later Johnson announced that he was cured and cancer-free and (there must
be a rock God?) and he returned with what his heart and soul and his guitar did for a very longtime: entertaining countless fans with his razzle-dazzle rock ‘n roll music until 2 days ago.

Via his Twitter account, just today, we got the dreadful news: “This is the announcement we never wanted to make, & we do so with a very heavy heart: Wilko Johnson has died. He passed away at home on Monday 21st November. Thank you for respecting the family’s privacy at this very sad time. RIP Wilko Johnson.

Paul Weller once said: “Wilko may not be as famous as some other guitarists, but
he’s right up there. And there are a lot of people who’ll say the same. I can hear Wilko
in lots of places. It’s some legacy.”

Three great Wilko moments.

ROBERT PLANT And SUZI DIAN Pay Tribute To The Regretted MIMI PARKER Of LOW

Last weekend MIMI PARKER, one of the most respected musicians on the alt scene, passed away after an unfortunate battle with cancer. She drummed and sang with her husband Alan Sparhawk for their musical project LOW.

Parker was born only 55 years ago in Duluth, Minnesota. She had a big impact on Low’s sound and work. Last year the pair released their sublime – 13th – LP titled HEY WHAT.

Two days ago Robert Plant played a show in Glasgow. Along with Suzi Dian he paid tribute
to the regretted Mimi Parker. They performed a gripping version of Low‘s opening track MONKEY from their 2005 longplayer The Great Destroyer.
