‘I’M WAITING FOR THE MAN’ by MATT BERNINGER

The National’s frontman Matt Berninger is part of the impressive cast
of artists covering each a track of the historic 1967 debut LP on an
upcoming tribute album for The Velvet Underground.

Here comes your man…

______________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Monster Love’ by THE JACKLIGHTS (Boston, US)

This is my favourite track from this tight trio’s new 5-track EP Drift. It’s a jagged jackhammer that rotates full steam ahead driven by hammering drum beats, ablaze
guitar layers, and poppy vocals on top of it. Need electricity to load your batteries?
Monster Love will satisfy your needs. Damn right!

They just wanna turn you on

‘Highway To Hell’ by TOM MORELLO feat. Bruce Spingsteen and Eddie Vedder

The Rage Against The Machine guitarist announced his new, third solo, album, titled
The Atlas Underground Fire, out in October. One of the tracks is a cover of AC/DC‘s
1979 massive slam dunk Highway To Hell with awesome vocals by Spingsteen and Pearl Jam‘s main man Eddie Vedder.

Hell is this way…

‘The Blues Came In’ by THE BURNER BAND (Leeds, UK)

This Leeds’ rockabilly and roots duo brings the shake-and-twist of the 50s back to 2021. They rattle and roll, they riff and rock with a swirling pace. Get those dusty dance shoes out of the closet and make your move. Big fun guaranteed!

‘Be The Only One’ by RISE CARMINE (Canada)

A song “about catharsis. It invokes the feelings of those who are subservient
to an autocrat and their dreams for release from oppression; a Shakespearean
betrayal under cover of darkness.”

Expect a psychedelic groove with a bluesy touch, electrical vibe,
catching progression, and reflective vocals floating all over it. Yes!

Five Firecrackers To Stay On Track… In The Weekend

Five new firecrackers to fuel the most popular days of the week

‘Work Energy Principle’ by THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS (Manchester, UK)

A 9-minute trance trip fabricated by the trance trip experts. Play this on your
headphones, very loud, and pirouette yourself into oblivion. Have yourself a
dance marathon with the Chemicals on repeat. It helps to forget these surreal
pandemic times for a while.

Start here…

‘Blame It’ by MARLOW (East Sussex, UK)

Marlow is a fervent outfit out of East Sussex, UK. The band sucks listeners into their
world through a dynamic surge and zesty, modern approach. Their music is purely
about a feeling, told from the depths of their hearts and delivered with a hint of
mystique.

Blame it is an instant knockout. A solid gold stormer “about the lack of communication in relationships and how people try to avoid responsibility for their issues by shifting the blame onto others and coming up with excuses.” In a normal world, this cracker should be a big hit. Its sickly sticky pop melodiousness, its speedy punch, its steamed-up vocals, and its fiery chorus are simply irresistible. Don’t blame Marlow. They rock big time!

‘Dissonance’ by VEDA RAYS (Brooklyn)

“This song speaks to the psychological stress of our times as the byproduct
of cognitive dissonance en masse, and the collective shadows it projects. Yet,
the hopeful message implied is that if we can shine a light, shadows disappear.”

Roaring rippers like this one make my day on the spot. Big tune, big drive,
big chorus, big guitars, big vocals, big intensity. Adrenalized top stroke!

And a great animated video clip…

______________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Time Will Define’ by FEVER (UK)

Electrifying Britpop at its instantly sticking best. Somewhere between
Supergrass
(in the 21st Century), The La’s and The Bluetones. The singer’s
feverish vocals stand out. What a vox! He lifts this arresting stunner to
a remarkable level. Touchdown!

Wham bam…

‘Lineage’ by SMOKE (Holland)

Louisiana Swamp Blues sultriness from… The Netherlands. No frontiers when it comes
to stirring up the steam, turning up the heat, and pumping up the decibels. This red-hot ripper is about “brotherhood and supporting your friends and family during hard times.”

All together now…

‘Ladylike (Don’t Hold Her Back)’ by CUBS REFRAIN (Toronto, CA)

Band member Erin Roblin reflects on her experiences with society’s expectations of her as a woman, including the fight for control of her own choices in her life and career. It’s 2021 and women still have to suffer from external pressure. Incredible. Therefore, encouraging earworms like these are always welcome for everybody – regardless the gender – who struggles with being pushed for the wrong reasons by the wrong people. Ladylike is a frisky and sprightly humanlike booster. Get up, stand up and fight for your right to be who you are.

Jive to the beat…

‘Glide’ by THE DAILY SPREADSHEETS (Divinópolis, Minas Gerais)

Brazilian singer/songwriter Henrique Neves is the man behind The Daily Spreadsheets.
Riff-roaring rock ‘n’ roll streams through his sonic veins for years now. On Glide he lets
The Beach Boys sound like if they were a speed-up garage band. Good vibrations indeed.

25 June 2021

Five new firecrackers to boost your weekend…

‘How Not To Drown’ by CHRVCHES and Robert Smith

the hands of The Cure‘s mastermind Robert Smith. He pumped up the volume and
build a titanic wall-of-sound.

‘Cannonball’ by EAMON MCGRATH (Toronto)
This instantly affecting country rock anthem “alludes to the opportunity to reflect
and look back on moments in your life as a musician with love and desire, but also a deep realization that they will never return.”
. The captivating duet vocals with Cayley Thomas – think Emmylou Harris on a high – are nothing less than overwhelming. You’ll understand why Eamon McGrath is a Gram Parsons and Lee Hazlewood fan. Top stuff!

.
‘Sirens’ by FUZZY LIGHTS (Cambridge UK)
“Its a dark love song that tries to figure out how can we live with one another when there
is so much hate and resentment.”
Sings of the times indeed. Sirens has an ominous psych flow while the ghostly vocals emphasize the song’s haunting atmospherics. An amplified mediation about the uncertain future. From the band’s new album Burials, out 2nd July.

‘Boston Lager’ by THE RUDDY RUCKUS (Hamilton, Canada)
Remember those crazy nights out on the town when you’re with your friends and things are starting to get a little too carried away? It’s possible you can’t remember those out-of-your-mind drink sessions because you had way to much Boston Lager in your bloodstream.

Anyway, this swaggering rocker feels like a sober reflection about marathon booze excesses. This is the second single from our upcoming debut album Wentworth And
Main
out September 10th,

‘We Are Between’ by MODEST MOUSE (Portland, US)

flabbergasting album Blue Weekend.

Go for it, Ellie

‘Those Are The Days’ by THE HACIENDAS
The Mancs nail it again with this jagged jackhammer. The Haciendas prove
once more that guitar rock is alive and bloody kicking. An irresistible pace,
a head-over-heels drive, impassioned vocals, a blazing chorus and a
frantic-as-fuck guitar solo. Hail hail!

Tom Smith (frontman) “It’s a celebration of those days at music festival, which will
soon be returning. We all cannot wait for the return of live music, the music scene is
going to go absolutely nuts, like one massive party and like the chorus states, ‘nothing
will ever beat this feeling’.”

Start the party here…

.

‘No Gods No Masters’ by GARBAGE (US/Scotland)
Flashing glam title track from
their new album out today.

Still love you, Shirley

‘Miss Those Days’ by TRAVIS JAMES feat. Esteva
A vocal beauty. A sepia-colored musing. Lovesick, pondering and tender.
Romantic melancholia at its emotive best. “It’s the nostalgic story of two
people that have moved on but both still feel a sense of attachment to each
other.”

Enjoy here…

.
‘Heavy’ by SUG DANIELS (Delaware, US)
For some reason, this up-and-coming artist reminded me of ‘Little’ Stevie Wonder when this song reached my sensitive ears for the first time while watching his video. I guess because he’s young and black with an inspiring voice and an HQ talent for songwriting.
This debut single is about “the horrible awkwardness of having romantic desires for a friend but not being sure if the feeling is mutual.” A very promising start.

A song about being stuck on the other side of an ocean from someone else.
Pretty funky, brisk, and edgy. From their new, upcoming  LP Path Of Wellness.

‘Never Be The Shame’ by FURTHER THE LION (Hamilton, Ontario)
The song “reminds the listener that sometimes something profound can happen to
you that changes you to your core and it’s not always a negative thing.”
Expect emo-grunge melodiousness with a passionate edge, a romantic feel, and a gripping chorus that sticks instantly. Touchdown!

Here’s why…

‘Something Real’ by FHANG (Canada)
Mishka (half of this Canadian duo): “At the beginning of lockdown I would quietly dance in my living room at 3am listening to a rough version of the tune. It would turn into a disco with all the fire trucks and ambulances lighting up our curtains.” Weird experiences in weird times. This second single is movin’ smoothly on a groovin’ bass line while the sensitive mid-tempo ballad resonates like a reflective and melancholic The National reverie. I love it!

The song deals with the devastation of coral reefs, ocean resources, and our natural world.
