10CC Topped The UK Single Charts With ‘I’M NOT IN LOVE’ 50 Years Ago Today

1 July 2025

British rockers 10CC scored their biggest hit with
I’M NOT IN LOVE (almost 400 million streams on
Spotify).

It topped the UK Charts on 1 July 1975, today 50 years ago.

It became the second of the group’s three No.1 singles in the UK and peaked
at No.2 in the US. The song’s writer Eric Stewart created loops of about 12 feet
in length and spent three weeks recording the band singing “ah” 16 times for
each note of the chromatic scale, building up a “choir” of 48 voices for each
note of the scale.

Having created twelve tape loops for each of the 12 notes of the chromatic scale, Stewart played each loop through a separate channel of the mixing desk resulting in the constant background of vocals heard throughout the song. Wowzers.

10CC Scored No 1 Hit In The UK With ‘RUBBER BULLETS’ 50 Years Ago Today

Top singles from the past

Guitar pop legends 10CC started their journey back in 1972 in Stockport, UK.
The group featured Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme.

The special thing about the band was, when it came to songwriting they had two
teams, Gouldman/Stewart for the catchy pop tunes (most of their hits) and Godley/Creme for experimenting with art and cinematically inspired writing. The four of them stayed together until 1976, Godley/Creme left during the recording process of the band’s 5th LP.

The tandem was replaced with other musicians, but from there on it was only 5CC.

Anyway, with the rad rocker RUBBER BULLETS they scored
one of their 3 number-one triumphs in the UK 50 years ago
today, on 22 June 1973.

Turn all cylinders on.
