5 BEST ALBUMS Of The Month – JUNE 2024
29 June 2024
Band: THE MYSTERINES
Album: AFRAID OF TOMORROWS
The Scoucers 2nd one
Lia Metcalfe (vocalist/guitarist/songwriter): “I think it’s easy to look back and feel
judgmental about your younger self, but we’re past that now,” We feel like we know
who we are as a band.”
Louder Than War says: “It’s everything and so much more than you would expect
as the band’s maelstrom of creative energy extends their sonic boundaries deeper
into new, darker and unchartered corners of your mind.”,
TUTV: The charismatic Lia Metcalfe‘s singular voice, both anxious and soul-stirring,
is all over this awe-inspiring new record. So instrumental for the band’s sound that resonates more poignant, gloomier and spine-chilling than on their debut.
It fits Metcalfe‘s introspective reflections on her turbulent past terrifically well,
with haunting and goosebumps-causing songs that have an imposing impact.
Jagged riffs fly all over the place and the charged intensity at play here creates
a doom-laden atmosphere. So far, I returned the most to the two closing candlelight ballads (Inside A Matchbox / So Long) and the acoustic, folky campfire chant Afraid Of Tomorrows with Metcalfe sparkling in the shadows.
There’s always a light shining at the end of the Mysterines tunnel.
The four Scousers are gearing up for a triumphant future.

Artist: JOHN CALE
Album: POPtical Illusion
UNCUT Mag says: “He returns in double-quick time with more selections from
his 80-song lockdown splurge, but this time in a gentler, almost uplifting mood.
Radical optimism rather suits him.”
.
TUTV: This is the Welshman‘s 18th solo LP, only 18 months after the previous one, named Mercy. Cale is still facing his demons as he did on Mercy but here it sounds as if he knows how to beat them.
The layered-synths atmosphere and the rich orchestrations resonate more sanguine here and there, like on Davies And Wales, How We See The Light , and All To Good , songs you can hum along. and hypnotizing single Shark-Shark you can move and groove to.
But the overall tone still is pensive and meditative, no traditional rock ‘n’ roll for Cale,
with past/present reflections like on Calling You Out, Edge Of Reason, Setting Fires and the closing piano ballad There Will Be No River. At 82 his voice hasn’t aged whatsoever, still instrumental and a indispensable factor in his arrestingly crafted work. Remarkable.

Artist: ALAN VEGA (1938-2016)
Album: INSURRECTION
Another previously unreleased album following the splendid 2021 Mutator LP.
Liz Lamere (Vega’s widow and collaborator): “Insurrection was created in the time
period around 1997/98, after Mutator and prior to Vega’s 1999 release of 2007 and
captures the intense energy of NYC in the 90s rife with crime, killing, hate, fascism,
racism, and moral bankruptcy. You can hear the tortured souls floating through this
album.”
Pitchfork: “Unearthing 11 lost recordings from the late ’90s, the Suicide co-founder’s
newest posthumous release frames him as a doomsday prophet of the information age.
This newest collection is an oppressive, nauseating roller-coaster ride. Once you get off,
you’ll want to do it again.”
TUTV: Uncanny percussion, ghostly vocals, other-worldly vibes, jagged jams, capricious synth loops. It’s Alan Vega alright with another lost treasure. Modern day art from last century, showing once again that Vega was a musical visionary, an absorbing noise crusader, and a doom and gloom prophet.

Band: SPAMMERHEADS
Duo from Valencia, Spain
Album: DISCLAIMER
Press info: “Spammerheads reaffirm their predilection for industrial sounds, firmly in line with old school ebm, but consolidating a sound that they have already made their own. Disclaimer is a forceful work, with frenetic energy, where the tracks hit with intensity, fun, black humour and a desire to make the dancefloor move through powerful rhythmic sequences, thick and decisive bass lines wrapped in memorable melodies.
As has become a trademark of the band, in Disclaimer the vocals and lyrics lead us
through different states, passing through fury, emergency, dissatisfaction and bad blood, to culminate with the last track of the album in a better place.”

It takes two tango, it takes two Spammerheads to techno
TUTV: Looking for your 24-hour Ibiza beach party soundtrack? Here ls the ones.
Disclaimer offers you a salvo of EBM dance-floor uplifters. Imagine Chemical Brothers producing their intoxicating bloc rockin’ beats and Nine Inch
Nails adding industrial thunder and lighting hammering with Trent Reznor spewing his lyrics.
The Spanish duo deal with all sorts of bad signs of this time as we know it.
Let’s shake them all off mind-hypnotizing and body-activating electro master blasters.
It takes only two to tango,
it only takes two spammerheads to techno.

Artist: RICHARD HAWLEY (Sheffield, UK)
Album: IN THIS CITY THEY CALL YOU LOVE
NME:“The songwriter captures a sense of aching beauty through vivid odes to
the characters and architectural quirks of his hometown. His ninth LP, ‘In This City
They Call You Love’, elegantly represents what it means to be so entwined with one’s
locale; even in a place rich with musical history, Hawley remains a singular figure
for the way in which this fascination has permeated his songwriting.”

Press photo by 📸: Dean Chalkley
TUTV: Romanticism is written all over this sepia-colored record. As we already know
for a long time Hawley is a romantic at heart who’s in love with his city Sheffield since
he was a child. It feels/sounds like it’s more than just his hometown.
It’s the place where he experienced all things good and bad, happy and sad. It leads to melancholic musings, gripping daydreams and wistful reflections. With his soft-heartened voice and late-night lullabies, the late great Roy Orbison comes to mind on several occasions. A candlelight pearl.

Why The Late Great ALAN VEGA Became A Rapper
ALAN VEGA – Another Lost LP Named ‘INSURRECTION’ Shows The Legend’s Spine-Chilling Electro Noise Groove Impact Once Again
6 June 2024
Another previously unreleased album named INSURRECTION,
following the splendid 2021 Mutator LP, by the late great
ALAN VEGA (1938-2016) is out now.
11 songs showcase the unparalleled vision and uncompromising
force from one of the most influential artists of all time.
You can hear the tortured souls floating through this
album.”
Jared Artaud (fellow Vega collaborator): “Insurrection hits hard and shows the power
and intensity of Alan Vega’s visionary solo work. It feels like he was trying to break new
ground. There’s always a kind of magic that goes into working on Vega’s music. I feel like
he was tapped into some other dimension. One hand in the gutter and one hand in
the stars.”
Pitchfork: “Unearthing 11 lost recordings from the late ’90s, the Suicide co-founder’s
newest posthumous release frames him as a doomsday prophet of the information age.
Born into a brazen New York underworld, Vega spent his career taking evil, masticating
it to its sonic rudiments, and spitting it back out, often directly in people’s faces. Half of experiencing his work is allowing yourself to suffer, to be under his control.
This newest collection is an oppressive, nauseating roller-coaster ride.
Once you get off, you’ll want to do it again.”

TUTV: Uncanny percussion, ghostly vocals, other-worldly vibes, jagged jams, capricous synth loops. It’s Alan Vega allright with another lost treasure. Modern day art from last century showing once again that Vega was a musical visionary, an absorbing noise crusader, and a doom and gloom prophet.

That bounces forth and back, and funks and punks with big beats, schreeching
guitars, a sexy sax and Amyl ‘s sneering vocality.
Amyl rules.

They’re all psychopaths if you ask me.

4. ‘Repeat After Me’ by RAPTUROUS (Kent, UK)
Rapturous is an English Hip-Rock-Hop squad that erupt here like

riot-gun.
If you’re looking for an avid anthem that celebrates freedom,
then this is the very loud and very clear one you can go berserk
to in the streets.
Repeat after them.

7. ‘Don’t Go Making Plans’ by HARD-FI (UK)
The British pop/rock team that scored three successful albums between 2003 and 2014 returned in 2022 for some live action. They all got in the mood again and wrote/recorded thsi brand new song Don’t Go Making Plans.

8. ‘A Good Man Died’ by CUT THE KIDS IN HALF (New Jersey)
This rotating riff-ripper is just irresistible. It’s a head-spinning stomper that gets under
your skin from the get-go. A fervid upper with a jump-up-and-down with your fists in the air chorus that doubles your adrenalin production for 4 and a half banging minutes.
Think of the early zealous gusto and the buzzing drive of NYC’s celebs The Strokes.
In a normal world, this revved-up stunner of a tune should top all indie charts
all over the globe.
Cut it here!

9. ‘Cover It Up’ by TYPHOID ROSIE (Brooklyn, NY)

Photo: Janier De Jesus, via Typhoid Rosie
Rosie Rebel and her robust retro rock combo do it again. This one is for their beloved dog of six years and tour companion, Canaan, who now rocks his tail off, up there in the sky.
As we experienced before Typhoid Rosie always storm full steam ahead from start
to finish. This punked-up, harmonious chant with its sickly sticky chorus triggers your
best zigzagging moves. It’ll feature on their 5th album, called Last Words, which lands
on June 21.
“We’re not gonna leave you in this shithole town!

10. ‘Nothing To Report’ by FOLD PAPER (Winnipeg, US)
This far-out trio is masterminded by the Nigerian-born, Michigan-raised and
Winnipeg-based Chell Osuntade, who delivers almost-spoken-word lyrics searing
with intent. They produce a raw, jittery and energetic brand of post-punk.
Nothing To Report is a glorious cacophonous jackhammer going everywhere fast.
It rattles and rambles, motorized by schizophrenic guitars, a mean bass/drum
tandem and Chell Osuntade‘s sloganesque chant. Almost 5 minutes of razzle-dazzle turmoil, revved-up dynamics and jazzed-up rhythms. Think British mavericks black midi.
Touchdown.

11. ‘So Desperate’ by SALEM WOLVES (Providence, Rhode Island)

With this new piece, Salem Wolves taps into the human
psyche and a lost wrestler’s supernatural ambition.
Gray Bouchard (songwriter): “‘So Desperate’ is about recontextualizing what should be a moment of triumph as something grimy. If you’re ambitious or a dreamer, it’s easy to just focus on the goal, the stage, that moment in the spotlight when all eyes are on you. You tune out the noise, ignore your screaming muscles and tired bones, and march toward victory.”
Expect a riveting mid-tempo flare-up pushed by an agonizing vocalist,
an ironclad rhythm section, and mental guitars. Vehement emotionality.

12. ‘Cold’ by CRENSHAW PENTECOSTAL (North Carolina, US)
This North Carolina outfit formed, fuelled by late-night jam sessions, where the only
rule was to keep the spirit of Tom Petty alive, with members who found themselves
veering away from their roles as backing musicians for solo artists.
With Cold they hit bullseye. It’s a bittersweet epic Americana
symphony that touches heart and soul. Splendid score!

13. ‘Shark-Shark’ by JOHN CALE (Wales)
The 82-year-old VU legend JOHN CALE is one of those artists who’ll never stop
making music until his final breath. Back in January 2023 he released one of the
finest records of that year with Mercy.
And he has already another one to offer.

Happy 85 To ALAN VEGA Who Revealed Once Why The Band’s Name SUICIDE Was Choosen
23 June 2023
Alan Vega was born named Boruch Alan Bermowitz on 23 June 1938 in New York City.
He would have celebrated his 85 birthday today. Unfortunately, he passed away in
his sleep in 2016, aged 78.
Last year the tapes of a solo Alan Vega album, titled Mutator was found in some archives by his widow. It got a proper and remastered production and turned out to be a dark magical record.
Play it here.

SUICIDE Were Born In The USA – Hear A Previously Unreleased Track
New striking strokes
6 April 2023
Legendary eccentric noise duo SUICIDE (Martin Rev and Alan Vega)
released their 3th studio LP WAY OF LIFE 35 years ago.
For this anniversary occasion, the album will be re-released on 26 May including some previously unreleased tracks. One of them is a live cover version of Bruce Springsteen’s monster hit BORN IN THE USA (almost 400 million streams on Spotify)performed at a concert in Paris in 1988.
It’s a cheeky take with Suicide name-checking rock legends
