BILLY IDOL And TONY JAMES (Generation X) + STEVE JONES And PAUL COOK (Sex Pistols) = GENERATION SEX

2 July 2023

GENERATION SEX? Take two Generation X (1976-1981) punks, Billy Idol (vocals) and Tony James (bass). Add two sex pistols (1975-1978 and several reunions), Steve Jones (guitar) and Paul Cook and you have a punk supergroup.

The veterans got together for the first time in 2018, playing a series of gigs and went back home afterward. But these are music junkies, so this year they returned for another series of gigs (festivals and indoors). One of them was in Utrecht, The Netherlands, last Tuesday.
I travelled to our neighbours to sniff some of the good old punk nostalgia.

And? It was big fun, no more, no less. They sounded as a cover band of their own respectively classics, that came to rock out, nothing more, nothing less and to invite
us to go bananas to all the golden oldies they cranked-up (setlist below) what we all
did of course.

Billy Idol‘s presence was a bit of a letdown. Instead of flaming up the crowd, he stood there most of the time as a shy boy despite the fact that he was a natural-born frontman all his life. On the other hand we had riff maniac Steve Jones who produced enough electricity to get us all loaded for the full show. Lots of dancing by ourselves.

Symphonic Pop Rockers MERCURY REV Finally Back In Belgium This Friday – Here’s TURN UP THE VOLUME’s Proposed Playlist

20 June 2023

MERCURY REV. One of my favorite bands ever, on record and on stage.

The band was formed in 1989 by a bunch of students from the University at Buffalo
in New York. Their first three LPs (Yerself Is Steam – 1991 / Boces – 1993 / See You On
The Other Side
– 1995) were dope-infused psych rock-out records. Check them on Spotify

The great breakthrough came in 1998 with the majestic masterpiece DESERTER’S SONGS .
From there on, I started to go and see them play live. The magic about them performing on stage is that it doesn’t feel like a rock concert, but rather a spiritual experience. Always spellbinding and hypnotic.

With goosebumps vocalist and co-songwritter Jonathan Donahue (who also played for
2 years with fairytale eccentrics The Flaming Lips) and musical orchestrator Grasshopper (born Sean Thomas Mackowiak) as the beating heart of the Rev, another 5 albums followed with The Light In You as the most recent one, released in 2015. Full discography here .

All that said, I’m warming up now to see/hear MR for the 12th time, the first show since they played Brussels in 2015. They play in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium this Friday, 23 June. For the occasion, I made a playlist of 12 magnificent Rev pearls. Actually, 12 I want them to play.

LIAM GALLAGHER – Live KNEBWORTH 2022 Album In August – Sing-Along Taster ‘ROLL IT OVER’ Today

10 June 2023

Our kid played two massive concerts last summer – 3 & 4 June – at the legendary
green fields of Knebworth, UK The Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, Genesis,
Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Status Quo, Paul McCartney, Mike Oldfield, Red Hot Chili Peppers,
and yes… Oasis and more performed in front of audiences circa 100.000 and many more.

Liam Gallagher called it biblical shows.

On 11 August, a live registration album of
16 songs played at the concert will land.

1. Hello
2. Rock ‘n’ Roll Star
3. Wall Of Glass
4. Shockwave
5. Everything’s Electric
6. Roll It Over
7. Slide Away
8. More Power
9. C’mon You Know
10. The River
11. Once
12. Cigarettes & Alcohol
13. Some Might Say
14. Supersonic
15. Wonderwall
16. Champagne Supernova

The first taster is ROLL IT OVER. A mid-tempo power ballad from Oasis’ 4th LP
(released in 2000). At first, I thought it was a weird choice to start with, but when the chorus kicks in, you get goosebumps when you hear a choir of nearly 100.000 sing along.

THIN LIZZY – Classic Double LP ‘LIVE AND DANGEROUS’ Released This Day 45 Years Ago

Back in time

2 June 2023

Band: THIN LIZZY
Who: Legendary Irish rockers led
by the late great Phil Lynott.
20 August 1949 – 4 January 1986

Album: LIVE AND DANGEROUS
Released: 2 June 1978 – 45 years ago today

All Music: “Live and Dangerous’ was a glorious way to celebrate Thin Lizzy’s
glory days and one of the best double live LPs of the 70s. Of course, this, like
a lot of double-lives of that decade isn’t strictly live. It was overdubbed and
colored in the studio (producer: Tony Visconti). But even if there was some
tweaking in the studio, Live and Dangerous feels live, containing more energy
and power than the original LPs, which were already dynamic in their own right.
It’s this energy, combined with the expert song selection, that makes ‘Live and
Dangerous’ a true live classic.”
Score: 4.5/5.

Relive one of the best live LPs ever right here.

THE CURE Play A Brand New Bittersweet Symphony At Their Hollywood Bowl Concert In Los Angeles

New striking strokes

25 May 2023

Last weekend Robert Smith and his Goth orchestra THE CURE started their
North American tour. They played at the famous Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles
yesterday, the day before yesterday, and they will do it again tonight.

For the occasion, they debuted a brand-new song, named
ANOTHER HAPPY BIRTHDAY. A gripping bittersweet piano-driven
symphony with heavyhearted Smith vocals. Just wonderful.

Smith: “It’s harder to hold on / With every passing year / As the memories fade /
You slowly disappear / And your birthday is the worst day / I’m singing to a ghost /
Happy birthday / I forget how it goes”
