NIRVANA Released ‘MTV UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK’ Album 25 Years Ago…

1 November 2019

25 years ago today, on 1 November 1994, NIRVANA released ‘MTV UNPLUGGED IN
NEW YORK’
, 7 months after Kurt Cobain’s death. The LP features an acoustic performance recorded at Sony Music Studios in New York City a year before, for the television series ‘MTV Unplugged’. The set consisted of lesser known Nirvana songs and covers from songs by
the Vaselines, David Bowie, Lead Belly, and Meat Puppets whose members Cris and Curt Kirkwood joined Nirvana onstage.

It was overall an unexpected and a most striking event as the stripped versions of all songs, musically and vocally, turned them into heartbreaking, profound and almost spiritual musings sung by Kurt Cobain with an impassioned depth we never heard
before, because of most of the tracks we only knew the original, noisy renditions.
The final result was truly impressive, wholehearted and gripping.

AllMusic wrote: “If ‘In Utero’ is a suicide note, MTV Unplugged in New York is a message
from beyond the grave, a summation of Kurt Cobain’s talents and pain so fascinating,
it’s hard to listen to repeatedly… It’s a nakedly emotional record, unintentionally so, as the subtext means more than the main themes of how Nirvana wanted to prove its worth and diversity, showcasing the depth of their songwriting. As it turns out, it accomplishes its goals rather too well; this is a band, and songwriter, on the verge of discovering a new sound and style.”

NIRVANA Topped The UK Albums Chart With Brilliant Album ‘IN UTERO’ 26 Years Ago Today…

25 September 2019

IN UTERO is definitely my favorite NIRVANA album because it showed more and more how the great late terribly troubled KURT COBAIN was evolved into a a fantastic high-quality singer/songwriter. The LP, their third and final one, was released on 21 September 1993. It topped the UK Albums Chart four days after its release, 26 years ago today. It also hit the top spot of The US Billboard charts.

HISTORY – 5 April 1994 – KURT COBAIN Passed Away 25 Years Ago Today…

5 April 2019

On 4 April 1994, 25 years ago today, Nirvana‘s frontman and grunge icon Kurt Cobain committed suicide, only 27. A troubled young man who couldn’t/wouldn’t handle his unwanted star status. The band’s 1993 MTV Unplugged performance showed the highly sensitive and emotional side of Cobain even more than we already knew as this acoustic – to the bone – interpretation of several of their best known songs and some covers was both highly heartfelt and intense. To remember this special artist Turn Up the Volume! picked three moments of that unplugged session…

SCREAMING FEMALES Cover NIRVANA With Some Rowdy Firepower…

2 January 2019

Firm underground rockers SCREAMING FEMALES from New Brunswick, New Jersey started their noisy career back in 2005. Led by their energetic frontwoman and guitarist Marissa Paternoster the band released seven longplayers so far. At their New Year’s Eve show at Chicago’s Beat Kitchen last Monday the impetuous threesome fired up the crowd with two highly charged covers – ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and ‘Breed’ – of iconic grunge legends NIRVANA played one after the other without interruption and with some mighty crude spunk and rowdy firepower.

NIRVANA The TRICKY Way – Here’s A Trippy ‘SOMETHING IN THE WAY’…

When exploring hip-hop artist TRICKY covered Nirvana‘s gloomy Nevermind ballad SOMETHING IN THE WAY back in 2001 on his Blowback LP with the vocal help of arresting singer Francesca Belmonte the sombre song turned into a trippy, even
spooky vibration. Get the feeling right here…
