Rock and roll cannonball LIAM GALLAGHER launches his third solo album C’Mon You Know next Friday. For the impatient fans here’s another new track from the upcoming
full length premiered live yesterday, on the Later With Jools Holland TV Show.
Last week the post-rap-punk gruppo YARD ACT out of Leeds, performed the title track
of their victorious debut LP on the popular American Tonight TV Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Until early last year, after a couple of singles, nobody ever heard about them (except me, of course). But halfway 2021, their name started to pop up here and there in the British media (the experts on hyping). A few months later they were suddenly the next big thing
of 2022 on multiple music websites/zines/blogs. And now they woke up Amercia up too.
Last January the debut LP The Overload landed and got euphoric reviews. Agreed, it’s a great debut, but after several plays it sounded too familiar with other British bands from the ongoing post-punk rebirth (Ditz, Crows, Life, Shame, Squid etc…) and therefore will not go in into history as one of the best debuts ever.
Anyways, from nowhere to American TV, here’s Yard Act…
Yesterday they played before the cameras of the Jimmy Kimmel Live show performing
an enthralling version of TRIED TO TELL YOU, a single from the album.
Last November teenage songstress NELL SMITH and Oklahoma’s psychedelic bohemians THE FLAMING LIPS teamed up (after meeting several times after Lips gigs) teamed up for an album of 9 covers of Nick Cave songs album. Totally special, right? You don’t see a 13-year-old teenager front a big name band, every day. Plus, covering Cave is not really like having a walk in the park. But it all turned tremendously well with Where The Viaduct Looms as the exquisite result.
Coyne: “It is always great to meet excited, young creative people.
With Nell we could see she is on a journey and thought it would be
fun to join her for a while and see if we could get things going. It was
a great way to connect with her and help harness her cool attitude
to making music.”
Nick Cave: “I’m a fan.”
A couple of days ago Nell and The Lips played Red Right Hand on the American Late Show.
Last month the top-notch Australian songstress COURTNEY BARNETT
released her third full-length Things Take Time, Take Time.
In between concerts on her current North-American tour she jumped into
the studio of the Jimmy Kimmel Live show this week to play one of the tracks
from the LP, the sticky lullaby called If I Don’t Hear From You Tonight.
Pitchfork said: “Every musical element from vintage synthesizers to even-more
vintage guitars is honed and cut clean, chipping off some of the hazier edges of
the band without losing the methodical and gorgeous production that Granduciel
and his co-producer, Shawn Everett, have mastered.” Score: 8.5.
As usual, when a new album comes out it’s followed by all kinds of promo (TV/interviews/gigs). Same process for The War On Drugs who played on the
American TV Show Jimmy Kimmel Late two days ago, playing a sparkling version
of the LP’s title track…
Artist: SNAIL MAIL Who: The alter ego of 22-year old American indie
rocker/guitarist/singer-songwriter Lindsey Jordan Active: Since 2015
Snail Mail released her 2nd album Valentinelast Friday with many critics
going crazy over it. NME gave the LP a full 5/5 score: “A beautiful progression
from her influential debut. Lindsey Jordan’s songwriting is as astute as ever, and her
exploration of love here is set to a rich palette of explorative strings and synths.”
Jordan also performed for the first time on American TV
last weekend playing the LP’s title track with vigor…
Former Talking Head chief David Byrne has realized
a grand solo career since he asked himself what a psycho
killer was all about.
So far he fabricated 10 solo albums (2 more than with Talking
Heads), but also collaborative LPs with Brian Eno and St. Vincent.
Three years ago his most recent album American Utopia came out.
I wonder if he already had the plan back then to stage a very successful Broadway show – mix of poetry, dance, music – in New York City centered
around that album a year later, leading to a recording of the whole show.
It attracted so many accolades and visitors that the show returned and
is currently playing at St. James Theater.
To celebrate the triumphant production he appeared with his dance band, once
again, on American TV a couple of days ago playing/performing an ecstatic version
of I Zimbra, the opening track of the Heads’ astonishing 1979 LP Fear Of Music.
