I’m A Soul Man – PAUL WELLER Released His 15th Solo Album ‘ON SUNSET’

7 July 2020

Artist: Paul Weller
Album: On Sunset – his 15th solo LP
Released: 3 July 2020

The Line Of Best Fit wrote: “Faced with soul-infused rock and cascades of electronic
and orchestral facets, Paul Weller’s latest creation is a shimmering sign of the times…
Compared to previous albums A Kind Revolution and True Meanings, On Sunset provides a more experimental feel, sitting at the intersection between various genres and pervading the depths of different ideas and moods, though never really committing to one or the other… On Sunset could be viewed as an album reinstating Weller as the keeper of mod musical tradition, but it’s also an album that sees him taking a rare glance into the rear-view mirror as he speeds into the ’20s.”
Score: 8/10.

Keyphrase:  “The Modfather is a soul man at heart.”

Keywords: A 21st Century Marvin Gaye,  Motown echoes, Cafe Bleu revisited,
angry adult man, stylish council jams, Beat surrender tunes, In the city blues

‘WAKE UP THE NATION’ By PAUL WELLER Came Out 10 Years Ago…

Old and new albums to make your day…

19 April 2020

The imperishable Modfaher PAUL WELLER released his tenth album WAKE UP THE NATION, on 19 April 2010, ten years ago. One of his best works in my book. A return to brilliant form with Weller as greedy, fervent and angry as in his good old days, showing
he’s still committed and caring. The record, no fillers all killers, inspired him to make another duo of impressive follow-up LPs Sonik Kicks (2012) and Saturns Pattern (2015).

The album features contributions from Bruce Foxton, former bassist of legendary band
The Jam. Weller said about the new collaboration: “We’d both lost loved ones and without getting too spiritual that was the spur of it. I spoke to him this time last year when his wife Pat was ill and that broke the ice. There was no big plan, it was easy, a laugh, and nice to see him and work together again. We just slipped back into it.”

NME wrote: “After three decades, he’s still at the top of his game – still reinventing, still chasing melodic perfection. Only difference now is that he’s pretty much on his own; nobody else flits from style to style with as much ease and precision. Modlike and Godlike – ‘Wake Up The Nation’ shows just how lucky we are to have Weller.” Full review here. Score: 4.5/5

Happy 61 To PAUL WELLER

25 May 2019

Happy 61 to PAUL WELLER who was born as John William ‘Paul’ Weller Jr. on 25 May 1958 in Woking, Surrey, England. To celebrate this supreme singer/songwriter/rocker/crooner’s birthday I’m sure that the angry older man would agree that WAKE UP THE NATION is a fitting and highly relevant choice to do so. C’mon Great-Britain, wake up…

PAUL WELLER Released Second Soulful Solo Album ‘WILD WOOD’ 25 Years Ago…

Going back in sonic history looking for memorable albums…

5 September 2018

Artist: PAUL WELLER

Album: WILD WOOD – 2nd solo LP

Released: 6 September 1993 – 25 years ago

ALL MUSIC wrote: “Paul Weller deservedly regained his status as the Modfather with his second solo album, Wild Wood. Actually, the album is only tangentially related to mod, since Weller picks up on the classicism of his debut, adding heavy elements of pastoral British folk and Traffic-styled trippiness. Add to that a yearning introspection and a clean production that nevertheless feels a little rustic, even homemade, and the result is his first true masterwork since ending the Jam…” – Score: 4.5/5 – Full review here

TURN UP THE VOLUME! says: Weller’s first big solo achievement.
Soulful, impassioned and entertaining.

TODAY’S YESTERDAY ALBUM – Eponymous Solo Debut by PAUL WELLER…

Remarkable albums from the past…

Self-titled solo debut LP by PAUL WELLER
Released: 1 September 1992 – 26 years ago today

ALL MUSIC wrote: “Arriving between the implosion of the ‘Style Council’ and the commercial comeback of ‘Wild Wood’, Paul Weller’s eponymous 1992 debut is sometimes overlooked, but
it’s one of his finest records, a smooth, soulful excursion pitched precisely between the sophisticated swing of the ‘Style Council’ and the rustic rock of ‘Wild Wood’… Weller creating something new and true from his inspiration. He would soon underscore the rock and folk elements…” –
Score: 8/10 – Full review here

TURN UP THE VOLUME! says: A first soulful taster for many more great albums to
come. Weller was/is one of the most impressive British singer/songwriters ever.
