15 July 1973 – No Sunny Afternoon For RAY DAVIES At THE GREAT WESTERN EXPRESS FESTIVAL In London

15 July 2025

On 15 July 1973, today 52 years ago THE KINKS were part of a stars-studded
bill at The Great Western Express Festival at White City in London.

So far, so good.

But The Kinks mastermind RAY DAVIES was dealing with private problems.
His wife had left him recently, taking their children with her. Davies told the
crowd from the stage that he was sick of the whole thing and would retire.
He then walked into a local hospital and collapsed from an overdose of
tranquilizers.

Not a sunny afternoon for Ray.

Happy 79 To Kinks Legend RAY DAVIES!

21 June 2023

Sir Ray Douglas Davies, the former frontman of THE KINKS
one of the most iconic 60s/70s bands ever, was born on
21st June 1944 in London, England.

Happy 79 to a brilliant singer/songwriter, a colorful storyteller
and an engrossing observer. A genuine British pop star who
wrote countless timeless gems and still is alive and kicking
as a bona fide solo performer.

3 great Ray moments.

‘STOB YOUR SOBBING’ By THE PRETENDERS – 1979

16 April 2023

Power pop heroes PRETENDERS fronted by the utterly charismatic
Chrissie Hynde released their tremendously infectious poppy debut
single STOP YOUR SOBBING in 1979, amidst the punk explosion
in the UK.

It was a cover. The original was written by kink Ray Davies about
a crying girlfriend he broke up with. It was released as a single in
1964 only in… South-Africa!

Guess what? Ray Davies & Chrissie Hynde had a relationship and
a child. No sobbing for them, until they split up sometime later.

C’mon Chrissie.
