JENNA DEVRIES – Imposing Nashville Voice Shines On New Liberating Anthem For Cult Survivors

New striking strokes

5 November 2023

Artist: JENNA DEVRIES
A Nashville-based singer-songwriter
writing/releasing Gay Southern Pop Rock.

New single: RIP

DeVries: “I wrote the chorus to this song shortly after I came out. When I chose to be my authentic self, I lost basically my entire community – my family, friends, and church. It came to me after one particularly painful moment – over Christmas, my best friend from high school called me and told me she never wanted to see me again because I was ‘dangerous to have around her children’ because I would show them a “homosexual lifestyle.’ Best friends for years.

I was literally in her wedding, and she cut me off like it was nothing. This song came from
a place of anger. I felt like I needed to write a song that allowed me to be angry and mourn
the relationships that I no longer had. I decided I would rather be alone forever than live surrounded by people who only want the version of me that suits them. High-control religious environments make people hate what they fear and fear what they don’t understand. If you are a survivor of a cult or HCR environment – this song is your anthem. Always choose yourself – the rest of your life, the best of your life will follow.”

TUTV: It always blows my mind to find out how many LGBTQIA+ haters there are on
this intolerant planet. People who despise people because of their gay sexuality. People who don’t care if someone is happy with who she/he is. It must be a horrible thing every time you’re confronted with those bigoted idiots, with lots of them being religious freaks.

I’m sure, as a gay musician, it must be liberating to write a song about this never-ending biased enmity, about who you are, not what others think you should be.

That’s exactly what Jenna DeVries does with her new monumental single, written after
her best friend dumped her. RIP is a grand power-pop composition, a puissant stomper,
a vocal tour de force. Think of the melodramatic dynamics of Florence + The Machine and the badass flair of Miley Cyrus. Yes, that good. A you’ll never walk alone booster. Marvellous thrill.

Tune in.

JANIS JOPLIN Passed Away 50 Years Ago – Only 27

The wonderful JANIS JOPLIN with her unique hoarse voice passed away 50 years ago today, on 4 October 1970, after an accidental heroin overdose. She was only 27 just like Brian Jones, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse and blues pioneer Robert Johnson. Pretty creepy if you ask me. She was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame in 1995.

Piece Of My Heart‘ and ‘Me And Bobby McGee‘ are two of her most famous songs…
