Power pop heroes PRETENDERS fronted by the utterly charismatic Chrissie Hynde released their tremendously infectious poppy debut
single STOP YOUR SOBBING in 1979, amidst the punk explosion
in the UK.
It was a cover. The original was written by kink Ray Davies about
a crying girlfriend he broke up with. It was released as a single in
1964 only in… South-Africa!
Guess what? Ray Davies & Chrissie Hynde had a relationship and
a child. No sobbing for them, until they split up sometime later.
It’s been 2 years since Portland’s dream pop duo PURE BATHING CULTURE
released their latest longplayer – the 4th in 10 years – with Hats.
They return now to connect with the upcoming holidays with a cover of the magnific 1983 Xmas reverie 200 MILES (more than 84 million streams on Spotify) by THE PRETENDERS, written/sung by the fabulous Chrissie Hynde.
PBC shared it along with this message.
“hi friends! happy holidays! we’re excited to share our cover of 2000 miles by one of
our very favorite bands the pretenders! it was truly a joy to explore this song together.
the holidays can be tough especially if you’ve lost someone or if you’re separated from loved ones, so this one goes out to anyone who’s going through a hard time right now. sometimes there’s magic to be found in the melancholy though…it’s been a rough year for us in a lot of ways but you all are our diamonds sparkling in the snow. thank you for being here with us!
your support here at bandcamp truly makes a huge difference.
we love you all, thank you so much for listening to our music we love being here with you!”
PBC‘s take has a similar approach, sounding both emotive and tender,
not cheesy Xmassy. Sarah Versprille‘s starry-eyed voice and Daniel Hindman‘s
sparkling guitar lines come together just beautifully. Glorious version.
Christine Ellen Hynde was born in Akron, Ohio on 7 September 1951. Happy 71 to an utterly cool songstress who flew to London in the mid 70s to dive into the punk scene of London where she joined the young brats who hung out at the late Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren’s fashion clothes shop SEX.
Later she was a writer for NME magazine, before starting her band The Pretenders in 1978 who made 11 LPs between 1979 and 2020
and had multiple singles hits.
Three big Chrissie moments
– BRASS IN POCKET –
(1979)
– BACK ON THE CHAIN GANG –
(1982)
– I GOT YOU BABE –
(Sonny and Cher cover with UB 40.
This is a great live rendition at the
massive ‘Free Nelson Mandela‘
rock event in London in 1988)
After the thrilling 2017 comeback album Alone veteran popster CHRISSIE HYNDE
and THE PRETENDERS will launch a new album HATE FOR SALE in July.
After sharing moody lead-single ‘It’s A Buzz’ and title track ‘Hate For Sale’ the band dropped another cut called ‘YOU CAN’T HURT A FOOL’. A gripping soul ballad with Chrissie Hynde‘s as the heroine upfront, heartrending and fervid.
After top comeback album Alone the wonderful CHRISSIE HYNDE and THE PRETENDERS return with new LP HATE FOR SALE, out 1st of May.
Pre-order facilitieshere.
And here’s lead-single ‘THE BUZZ’. A mid-tempo vintage The Pretenders
love song with Chrissie Hynde‘s glowing vox sounding as sensual as ever.
Definitely growing older in style and with catching, crystal clear tunes.
