PJ HARVEY not only created/creates astoundingly challenging sounds but
the musical heroine always visualized her work too with eye-catching album/single
covers, sensual glamour outfits, showy press photos and splashy video clips like this
one for Down By The Water. One of the many standout tracks of her 5-stars 1995
LP To Bring You My Love.
The queen of indie PJ HARVEY releases her entire catalog on vinyl this year, starting
with her jagged 1992 debut album Dry coming next week. Simultaneously, for each LP,
a separate album of demo’s will be issued.
The reissue of her third longplayer album To Bring You My Love, which turned 25 this year, arrives in September. As a taste of its companion demos release, Harvey shared the demo for its classic track ‘Down By The Water‘.
The wonderful PJ HARVEY released her third LP ‘TO BRING YOU MY LOVE’
on 27 February 1995, 25 years ago today. Her first collaboration with John Parish.
It was her breakthrough longplayer, heavily promoted by her major label Island
Records. In my book one of her best achievements. All killers, no fillers. Intense,
sensual, compelling high-quality songwriting. The album reached #12 in the UK
and #40 in the US.
Rolling Stone wrote at the time: “Harvey has ambitions to remake rock & roll and
its myths in her own guise. So what’s this young, white, bluesdrenched woman doing?
In attempting to create a sexual landscape as charged as the Midnight Rambler’s,
Harvey envisions a teeming underworld where she is victim, aggressor and accomplice,
song by song.”. Full review here – Score: 4/5

‘C’mon Billy’ by PJ HARVEY
A journalist described Harvey in the video clip as
a ‘sadomasochistic dominatrix in blood-red dress’.
Sounds like a pretty accurate description to me.
