9 March 1987 – U2 Released Their Magnum Opus ‘THE JOSHUA TREE’ This Day 37 Years Ago

9 March 2024

On 9 March 1987 – 37 years ago today – U2 released their worldwide magnum opus
THE JOSHUA TREE. The Irish rockers fifth album, produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian
Eno
, made them 24 Carat superstars all over the planet. Influenced by their American
tour experiences, relating literature and Uncle Sam’s politics and probably because of
their commercial and competitive desire to confirm their already huge status in the U.S.
of A., the band chose America as a central theme for the record.

35 years ago today, on 8 October 1998, with DESIRE from their

The band cited the Stooges‘ song 1969 as the primary influence
on the song, which is an interpolation of the Bo Diddley beat.

U2 Dropped Their Tribute Rocker To Las Vegas – Hear ‘ATOMIC CITY’ Here

Noise that works faster than any stimulant

1 October 2023

Irish mega stars U2 are back with a new track, titled ATOMIC CITY.
A zealous tribute rocker to Las Vegas where they played a couple of
concerts the past few days.

Note: due to the chorus’ similarity to Blondie’s ‘Call Me,’ both
Debbie Harry and Giorgio Moroder get co-writer credits.

You too.

Happy 62 To Masterly Guitar Hero THE EDGE

8 August 2023

I guess U2‘s masterly guitarist THE EDGE doesn’t need an introduction.

One story tells that members of the Dublin’s Lypton Village surrealist street gang
to which Bono belonged gave him his nickname The Edge. However, the origin of
the name is disputed and other theories include a description of his guitar playing
and his preference for not becoming fully involved and therefore remaining on the
edge of things.

He was born named Dave Evans in Dublin (Ireland) on 8 August 1961.

Happy 62 to an extraordinary musician who’s six-string play was/is
fabulous and fundamental to the band’s sound and success.

Two examples of his brilliance.

Classic Clips – U2 With Euphoric Live Version Of ‘OUT OF CONTROL’ At Red Rocks Amphitheater, Denver 40 Years Ago Today

For your eyes

5 June 2023

40 years ago today, on 5 June 1983, Irish megastars U2 played
an iconic concert at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater near
Denver, US.

I have no idea why this euphoric version of their 1980 debut single
OUT OF CONTROL wasn’t included, like a couple of tracks played that
day were, on the live LP Under A Red Blood Sky released in November
of that year.

Anyway, this clip shows what a U2 live performance is all about and
why The Edge is a guitar virtuoso and Bono a pure show/front-man.

Euphoria in motion.

An S.O.S Message – BONO And THE EDGE Cover ABBA

17 March 2023

On the BB Radio series 2 of artists playing covers in the studio’s piano-room
U2‘s main men Bono and The Edge were the latest guests. As ABBA fans
for years they picked the Swedish pop stars’ 1975 hit SOS to perform, backed
by a silent orchestra.

The Edge: “We found a Johnny Cash angle on the song.”

Here’s their intimate, acoustic version. Lovely.

Soulful Sunday With A Reworked Beautiful Day By U2

Reveries for the laziest day of the week

5 March 2023

Mega stars U2 release a new album, named SONGS OF SURRENDER
on 17 March. An album with 40 reworked/reimagining tracks of their
glorious past.

The Edge about the project: “Music allows you to time travel, and we became
curious to find out what it would be like to bring our early songs back with us to
the present day and give them the benefit, or otherwise, of a 21st-century
reimagining.”

One of the revisited songs is their huge hit BEAUTIFUL DAY
from their 2000 album All That You Can’t Leave Behind.

It sounds less euphoric and elated than the original version but its
tender and stripped treatment makes this rework quite beautiful.

Enjoy.
