27 March 1987 – U2 On A Roof Where The Streets Have No Name 37 Years Ago

27 March 2024

Global rock stars U2 released their piece de resistance The Joshua Tree on 9 March 1987.

One of the sublime hit singles on the LP was WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME.
A video clip for the song was shot on the roof of a building in Los Angeles, 18 days after the album launch, on 27 March, 37 years ago today. The event drew thousands of people cheering in the nameless streets.

U2 played an 8-song set with 4 versions of the single. Eventually, the police ordered
the band and their crew to stop and leave as the audience became too big to handle.
Yet the clip won the Best Video Grammy Award afterward.

The masterstroke peaked at #11 in the US, #4 in the UK,
and topped the Charts in Ireland and New Zealand.

Relive the euphoric moments.

9 March 2024

On 9 March 1987 – 37 years ago today – U2 released their worldwide magnum opus
THE JOSHUA TREE. The Irish rockers fifth album, produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian
Eno
, made them 24 Carat superstars all over the planet. Influenced by their American
tour experiences, relating literature and Uncle Sam’s politics and probably because of
their commercial and competitive desire to confirm their already huge status in the U.S.
of A., the band chose America as a central theme for the record.

NOW WATCHING! U2 On A Roof This Day In 1987

27 March 2022

Irish heroes U2 went on a roof in LA to perform WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME (from their blockbuster LP The Joshua Three) this day in 1987, probably inspired by the legendary roof showing of the Fab Fourin 1969.

Thousands of people danced in the nameless streets and traffic was blocked. The police got scared of this situation and stopped the spectacle a few minutes after Bono turned up the heat in the City of Angels.

C’mon, Bono

On The Roof In Los Angeles With U2 This Day In 1987

27 March 2021

Band: U2

Single: WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME (1987)
Score: #1 in Ireland and New-Zealand, #4 in the UK
and #13 in the US

Album: The Joshua Three

The clip for the song, unquestionably inspired by The Beatles‘ legendary roof
performance in London in 1969, was shot on the roof of a store in downtown
Los Angeles
(no idea why they didn’t go to New York, that’s THE city where the
streets have no names) on 27 March 1987. The shoot was ended by the police
when the traffic got stuck as hundreds of enthusiastic passers-by blocked the
streets. Rock ‘n’ roll!!

Let’s hit the roof
