Legendary trio THE POLICE (1977–1984, 1986, 2007–2008) topped released their
3rd LP ZENYATTA MONDATTA this day 45 years ago? ON 15 October 1980.


Rolling Stone said: “A near-perfect pop by a band that bends
all the rules and sometimes makes musical mountains out of
molehill-size ideas.”

Stewart Copeland (drummer) about the album’s title: “It’s not an attempt to be mysterious, just syllables that sound good together, like the sound of a melody that has no words at all has a meaning.

Miles (Stewart Copeland’s brother and group manager) came up with “Trimondo Blondomina”. Very subtle. Geddit? Like three blondes and the world. Then somebody thought of “Caprido Von Renislam”. That rolls off the tongue. It was the address of the studio in the Netherlands.

Legendary trio THE POLICE (1977–1984, 1986, 2007–2008) released their hit single
DON’T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME’ on 19 September 1980, today 45 years ago.

It topped the UK Charts and was the best-selling
single that year. In the US it peaked at #9.

It featured on their 3rd LP
Zenyatta Mondatta.

The song deals with the mixed feelings of lust, fear and guilt that a schoolteacher
has for a student and the fallout when the inappropriate relationship is discovered
by other adults.

Jerry Dammers on the American tour to promote the LP:
“Vibraphone music in elevators. Obviously this was classed as
rubbish. I don’t know if it was my state of mind, because I was
so zonked, but it struck me as a really weird, psychedelic music,
which is now called lounge or exotica. It’s been rehabilitated, but
at the time, to say you actually liked that music was mad. It
completely freaked out some of the band.”

David Gilmour: “A load of rubbish. We were at a real down point.

have a specific meaning like ‘Police Brutality’ or ‘Police Arrest’,
or anything predictable like that. Being vague it says a lot more.
Miles (Stewart Copeland’s brother and group manager) came up
