When PATTI SMITH Feels LIKE A ROLLING STONE…

coverblack

Seeing, hearing and feeling Patti Smith covering live (Jazz festival Montreux in 2005) the very song that made legendary troubadour Bob Dylan world-famous is truly magical…

How does it feel?
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
A complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

The original version was on Dylan‘s sixth album Highway 61 Revisited (1965)
and was also released as a single. Despite the fact that the song was more than
six minutes long (many radio stations refused to play the track in its entirety
back then), it became a worldwide hit and is probably his best know song…

THE DANDY WARHOLS – Here’s Their Brand New High-Voltage Garage Knock-Out…

‘Thick Girls Knock Me Out (Richard Starkey) by THE DANDY WARHOLS

(photo by Turn Up The Volume!)

After last year’s vintage grooves filled album DISTORTLAND the Portland chill out psych rockers THE DANDY WARHOLS return with smashing new track THICK GIRLS KNOCK ME OUT (RICHARD STARKEY). Wham holy bam! It’s a smoking, highly amplified banger from start to finish, sounding like recorded live in one take somewhere in an abandoned studio with authentic equipment from the sixties resulting in a stupendous and glorious garage rocker. I still haven’t figure out what Ringo Starr is doing in there as I’m too busy to bang my head while playing this nasty cracker on repeat…

FUTURE OF THE LEFT – Local Earthquake in Brussels…

FUTURE OF THE LEFT – Botanique Venue, Brussels – 9 February 2017

p1030226

Last year, the kick-ass Welsh/English noisemakers FUTURE OF THE LEFT released their
fifth, fan-funded, album THE PEACE AND TRUCE. One of my favorite albums of 2016…

.
Last Thursday they played Brussels (again) and did what they do best on a stage:
causing a local, apocalyptic earthquake with nasty bass and guitar drones while
unstoppable chatterbox frontman Andrew Falkous‘s turbo-charged voice is ranting
against anything and anybody with tons of sarcasm and humor. Top band! Top gig!

‘Always Sad’ by THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN

jesus

As already announced a few months ago THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN return soon
with a new LP. After last longplayer ‘Munki’ (1998) – the Scottish pop noisemakers will release new album DAMAGE AND JOY on 24 March. It’s co-produced with Killing Joke’s Martin Glover, who also plays bass on the record. The Reid brothers just shared a second new track. ALWAYS SAD is a nostlagic, yet highly catchy love song with smooth boys and girls harmonies. Here’s the audio clip….

‘GENERATION TERRORISTS’ by MANIC STREET PREACHERS – Released 10 February 1992

manics

Welsh legends MANIC STREET PREACHERS released their debut album, a double one, twenty-five years ago – on 10 February 1992. I fell in love with the Manics for the reasons most of us of fell in love with them at the very start: they looked bloody ‘cool’, they ranted like newborn punks and, most important of all, they sounded anthemic & really big. But in my opinion (all opinions are subjective of course) GENERATION TERRORISTS would have been a 24 Karat Gold debut album as a single not a double one with the following tracklist:

Slash ‘n’ Burn / Motorcycle Emptiness / You Love Us / Little Baby Nothing / Stay Beautiful /
So Dead / Repeat UK / Spectators Of Suicide / Crucifix Kiss and Methadone Pretty.

Anyway Generation Terrorists overall was a hellish rock ‘n roll manifesto in sound
and content and the start of a brilliant career. Here we go back in history…

.
Fun to read: on the occasion of the album’s 20th birthday British music weekly NME claimed to have 20 reasons why you should love Generation Terrorists. Check them here

PUBLIC ENEMY – Debut Album ‘YO! BUM RUSH THE SHOW’ Is 30…

Looking back in time… memorable moments in sonic history!

7sevenmix

Thirty years ago – 10 February 1987 – political rap activists PUBLIC ENEMY released
their much praised and controversial debut album YO! BUM RUSH THE SHOW. A highly electrifying and explosive record dealing mostly with black anger and the frustrations of the oppressed African American community. It’s almost incredible that thirty years on, racism is still/again an alarmingly major issue. The Rick Rubin produced LP is regarded
as one of most influential albums in hip hop history. For British weekly NME it was their 1987 album of the year and Rolling Stone Magazine listed it in his 500 greatest albums
of all time
and, yes, Welsh rockers Manic Street Preachers were huge fans…

publicenely

Here’s a review by AllMusic:

“Sometimes, debut albums present an artist in full bloom, with an assured grasp on their sound
and message. Sometimes, debut albums are nothing but promise, pointing toward what the artist could do. Public Enemy’s gripping first album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, manages to fill both categories: it’s an expert, fully realized record of extraordinary power, but it pales in comparison with what came merely a year later. This is very much a Rick Rubin-directed production, kicking heavy guitars toward the front, honing the loops, rhythms, and samples
into a roar with as much in common with rock as rap. The Bomb Squad are apparent, but they’re in nascent stage — certain sounds and ideas that would later become trademarks bubble underneath the surface. And the same thing could be said for Chuck D, whose searing, structured rhymes and revolutionary ideas are still being formed. This is still the sound of a group comfortable rocking the neighborhood, but not yet ready to enter the larger national stage. But, damn if they don’t sound like they’ve already conquered the world! Already, there is a tangible, physical excitement to the music, something that hits the gut with relentless force, as the mind races to keep up with Chuck’s relentless rhymes or Flavor Flav’s spastic outbursts. And if there doesn’t seem to be as many classics here — “You’re Gonna Get Yours,” “Miuzi Weighs a Ton,” “Public Enemy No. 1″ — that’s only in comparison to what came later, since by any other artist an album this furious, visceral, and exciting would unquestionably be heralded as a classic. From Public Enemy, this is simply a shade under classic status.”

EVAN DANDO Will Reissue His 2003 Solo Album ‘BABY I’M BORED’ With Extra’s on Bonus Disc…

evan

American singer-songwriter EVAN DANDO best know as troubled frontman of THE LEMONHEADS will reissue his 2003 solo album BABY I’M BORED. It will be released in June as 2CD/2LP and Limited Edition 2LP/2CD set. The extra disc will feature unheard
and unreleased tracks, singles, b-sides and rarities.

“Mature and autobiographical, ‘Baby I’m Bored’ is a stellar record that stripped Dando of his grunge label. At the time of recording, he was without the band which saw him lean more towards an achingly melodic alt-country rock sound. Self-deprecating, these are songs of
decline and coming back from that.”

MARK LANEGAN BAND – Back With Striking Single ‘NOCTURNE’ From Upcoming Album…

‘Nocturne’ by MARK LANEGAN BAND

DSC05820

Eternal troubadour MARK LANEGAN and his band will release new album GARGOYLE
on 28th April via Heavenly Recordings. All details here. The 10-track LP features guest appearances from long-time collaborators Josh Homme, Greg Dulli and Duke Garwood.

In a press message Lanegan says about the new record: “I definitely feel like I’m a better songwriting than I was 15 years ago. I don’t know if I’m just kidding myself or what, but it’s definitely easier now to make something that is satisfying to me. Maybe I’m just easier on myself these days, but it’s definitely not as painful a process, and therefore I feel I’m better at it now. But part of the way that I stay interested in making music is by collaborating with other people. When I see things through somebody else’s perspective it’s more exciting than if I’m left to my own devices.”
