Bits & Pieces by MR. AIRPLANE MAN

MR. AIRPLANE MAN is Margaret Garrett (guitar & vocals) and Tara McManus (drums, organ and vocals) from Boston, Massachusetts. The band started first in the late 90s producing a welter of noise inspired by Mississippi hill country blues, Memphis weirdo rock and roll,
drony VU, bad ass Stooges and garage heat. They released three records and toured with some big names: Morphine, The Reigning Sound, White Stripes, Detroit Cobras, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Dirtbombs and The Blues Explosion among others. Last year, after more than
a ten-year break Tara and Margaret came back together for some live shows and plans
for a new LP. But first here’s some exciting stuff from the band’s past. BITS AND PIECES
is a collection of odds and ends culled from the duo’s private tapes and will be released
on a limited edition cassette (digital version is also available) via Chicago label Girlsville.

If you like your blues raw, intense, passionate, sexy, honest and powerful have a listen here. A stream of glowing fuel for heart and soul. No special effects. These devoted DIY ladies are for real, doing it THEIR electrifying way. Fix yourself a drink, dim the lights,
press the button and experience the cutting gloominess…

To Hell With Blue Mondays – Here’s Rock & Roll Bitch… COURTNEY LOVE

Weekly havoc to kick Blue Mondays in the ass…

You love or you hate her. After reading her 1998 biography Courtney Love: The Real Story by Poppy Z. Brite, years ago, I became a fan. I learned that Love had a miserable childhood and grew up without actually nobody, just nobody, taking care of her. This would affect her mental balance for the rest of her life (and, unfortunately, personally I know very well how psychological problems can mess up one’s mind). But she chose to survive, to fight back and to achieve something and she definitely did, with a middle finger for all those who branded her as a greedy opportunist. Yes, I love LOVE. She was amazing as an actress (The People vs. Larry Flynt / Man on the Moon) and even though she was not an outstanding musician she had brilliant moments with her band Hole (two great albums: Live Through This / Celebrity Skin). I saw her performing live twice and it was bloody ace. Here’s the one and only genuine rock and roll bitch…

Crazed Debut Single ‘ANTS’ By Hot New Los Angeles Act… STARCRAWLER

Steamy, hot, swirling, mental & creepy fun. Here’s STARCRAWLER out of sunny L.A. The band was formed one year ago by charismatic frontgirl Arrow de Wilde explaining in an interview how it all started: “I went through a period of time where I was really angry and frustrated. I wanted to start a band so badly because the band I had with my friends – before Starcrawler – had fallen apart. So I started watching live videos of The Runaways and studying Cherie Currie’s moves as well as Iggy Pop and Kiss. I slowly started to create this character, this alter ego maniac.” That sounds pretty deranged. Definitely the way we like it, all day long.

After a series of inflammatory gigs the quartet will release their debut single ANTS next week, on 12th May via Rough Trade. A burning glam cracker sounding like The Stooges fronted by Suzi Quatro on tons of speed while wrestling with her straitjacket. Enter the mad world of Arrow de Wilde and Starcrawler. PRIMAL SCREAM – Speed Means Freedom Of The Soul – ‘KOWALSKI’ Single Released 20 Years Ago…

When timeless in sound and vision…

‘Kowalski’ by PRIMAL SCREAM

Probably the nastiest groove PRIMAL SCREAM, featuring killer bassist Mani in the
line-up back then after The Stone Roses split, ever produced. A menacing steamroller
in honour of speed freak KOWALSKI, the madly driving hero of the 1971 cult movie Vanishing Point. It was the first single of The Scream‘s fifth album, named after that movie. One of their most striking LP’s ever to my ears. The single was released twenty
years ago today on 5 May 1997. Tighten your seatbelt, you never had a trip like this before. Start the mind-blowing engine of insanity here…

THE SINGLE

THE LYRICS

This radio station was named Kowalski
In honor of the last American hero to whom
Speed means freedom of the soul
The question is not when he’s gonna stop
But who is gonna stop him…

There goes the challenger
Being chased by the blue blue meanies on wheels
The vicious traffic squad cars
Are after our lone driver

The last American hero
The electric centaur, the demi-god
The super driver of the golden west
Two nasty Nazi cars are close behind
The beautiful lone driver
The police number are getting closer, closer
Closer to our soul hero, in his soul mobile
Yeah baby, they’re about to strike
They’re gonna get him, smash him
Rape the last beautiful free soul on this planet

Vanishing point (4x)
Soul on ice (7x)
Hello Kowalski (3x)

‘Heart Basel’ by THE DRUMS

ums

THE DRUMS, the 21st century indie Beach Boys out of New York City release new album ‘Abysmal Thoughts‘ on 16 June. All the songs are written and recorded solely by frontman Jonny Pierce. After sharing lead single ‘Blood Under My Belt‘ here’s another new track.

HEART BASEL sounds joyful but the song actually deals with a painful period in Pierce‘s
life: “I went through the most significant breakup of my life during the making of “Abysmal Thoughts.” During that vulnerable period, I attached myself to this guy who did not care at all for my feelings, but was good at pretending that he did. In retrospect, I think I knew deep down that he didn’t give a shit about me. But I continued to let him treat me like garbage because I thought if I had this handsome guy with me that somehow I wasn’t doing too bad. Of course now — with some professional help — I see that I was just lacking self-love and while it’s unhealthy to stay in that headspace for very long, it does make for good songwriting. “Heart Basel” is a song about him treating me “kindly” at Art Basel in Miami and then treating me
like garbage after he got what he needed. You live and you sometimes learn.”
