Boston Rockers MISTER VERTIGO Look Forward With Post-Pandemic Vibe ‘YOU ARE CLEARLY THE REASON WHY’

23 May 2021

Band: MISTER VERTIGO
Who: Alt rockers from Boston, Massachusetts

Pick: YOU ARE CLEARLY THE REASON WHY
A piece from the band’s 5-track EP Indie Nerd Strikes Again

About: “I think we all know that this industry will never be the same
after the pandemic, and I’d like to think we’re all at the point where we
have to approach it with a bit of humor to survive it. Combined with the
images of a sort of “bygone era” we think the words really reflect how a
lot of us are feeling about the future of our scene, but with a snarky
willingness to move forward and start over, to rebuild it better than it
was before,”
says lead-vocalist Jonathan Scanlon.

Score: With jingle-jangle joyfulness à la The Byrds and melodic melancholia
à la Band Of Horses these Boston rockers muse about the post-pandemic future.
The corona aftermath isn’t clear yet, so why not keep on rockin’ in the free world
and just see what happens. The soul-stirring power of music helps to fight our
viral demons and to enlighten our worried minds. Enter Mister Vertigo. Turn it up,
folks.

Is it right to just concede
To never feeling content?
Like, maybe just surviving
Is a great accomplishment
Is it good to just accept
That this is all that will be?
Like, maybe I should bail
On all the stale hypocrisy
Oh, I don’t know

CHRISSIE HYNDE Honors BOB DYLAN With Covers Album ‘STANDING IN THE DOORWAY’

23 May 2021

Artist: CHRISSIE HYNDE

Album: STANDING IN THE DOORWAY
Chrissie Hynde sings Bob Dylan who
turns 80 tomorrow(24 May)
Released: 21 May 2021

Chrissie: “A few weeks into lockdown last year, James sent me the new Dylan track ‘Murder Most Foul’… I remember where I was sitting the day that Kennedy was shot – every reference in the song. Whatever Bob does, he still manages somewhere in there to make you laugh because as much as anything, he’s a comedian. He’s always funny and always has something to say. That’s when I called James and said, “let’s do some Dylan covers”, and that’s what started this whole thing.”

Rolling Stone writes: “Chrissie Hynde proved the bona fides of her Bob Dylan fandom
decades ago. She sang “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” with him onstage at London’s Wembley
Stadium in ’84 and serenaded him with her own jaw-dropping, gospel-tinged rendition of “I Shall Be Released” at his 30th anniversary concert in ’91… So an album like Standing in the Doorway, which collects nine Dylan cover songs, must have felt like second nature to her… What’s most striking about Standing in the Doorway is how easy the recordings came to Hynde and Walbourne. The Pretenders have always been underrated covers artists, going back to their first single, a cover of the Kinks’ “Stop Your Sobbing,” and Hynde has always had a rare knack for figuring out what she has in common with the soul of song and playing that up. “

Full review here. Score: 4/5.

Turn Up The Volume: As much as I love Chrissie Hynde‘s voice and artistic persona,
and her bold choice – not the obvious ones – of Dylan songs she covered to celebrate
the living legend’s 80th birthday, only Dylan can really sing Dylan.

Electro Pop Icons PET SHOP BOYS Share New Intriguing Track ‘CRICKET WIFE’

23 May 2021

Electro-Brit-pop icons PET SHOP BOYS just came up
with a new intriguing track called CRICKET WIFE.

“A dramatic new song – almost 10 minutes long – features orchestral sounds and was
written by Chris as a classical-style instrumental piece. The lyrics, meanwhile, are taken
from a poem Neil Tennant had written. Pete Gleadall mixed the final track. The second
track is a lockdown version of Pet Shop Boys classic ‘West End girls’, a completely new
version of the classic song which debuted online in June 2020. Both tracks were recorded
during the first lockdown last year, with Chris and Neil recording their parts in their
respective homes.”

Along with this new one comes

Electro Krautrock In Overdrive – New Album ‘FALL OFF THE APEX’ By LA JUNGLE

22 May 2021

Band: LA JUNGLE
Who: An inflammable two cylinder
electro-noise engine from Belgium.

Album: FALL OFF THE APEX – their 4th LP
Released: 21 May 2021 – more info here

Score: Once this electro-punk-rock turbo leaves the gates, it’s impossible to
turn it off, no way whatsoever. Jim and Reggie produce a red-hot avalanche of
thunderous beats to go totally ballistic to, unless you’re stuck in a straitjacket.
Their trance-like, mind-boggling, faster-than-your-brain-can-register drive makes
your poor head spin uncontrollably. Repetitive guitar/synth/drum riffs boost your adrenalin’s stream and help you to shake all your hell-bent demons off. Get the
sonic picture? Before you press play make sure you’re, physically, in top shape,
if not you risk losing control and crash. Either way you’ll have a shocking electric
chair experience.

Here’s a short instruction track-by-track manual
in order to know what your ears can expect…

Aluminium River: Warming up
Le Jour Du Cobra: Razzle-dazzle wizardry
Du Sang Du Singe: Nine Inch Nails without brakes
Hyperitual: Hellish roller coaster

The End The Score: A didjeridoo driven tour de force,
ominous and spellbinding. A never-ending mindfucker.
