THE STROKES – Striking Debut Album ‘IS THIS IT’ Released 20 Years Ago

30 July 2021

Band: THE STROKES (New York City)
Active: Since 1998 / 6 studio albums (so far)

Album: IS THIS IT – debut LP
Released: 30 July 2001 – 20 years ago today
Came out first in Australia, later in the UK, and US
Score: #2 in the UK, #5 in Australia, #33 in the US

Pitchfork: “The Strokes have struck an incredible balance between
the two extremes of rock music: sentimentality and listlessness. Any
sentimentality in these songs’ lyrics is countered by Casablancas’ self-
reliant indifference, and his listless delivery is offset by the band’s fervid
attack. Beyond that, it’s hard to pinpoint what exactly it is about the
Strokes that keeps me listening. All I know is that it’s not easy to come
by, and I like it. A lot.”
Full review here. Score: 9/10.

Turn Up The Volume: Along with The White Stripes these New York
darlings – the champions of jingle-jangle rock – dominated the first
years of the new Millenium. The Strokes looked cool, acted cool, and
made a tremendously cool debut album. This was it.

Psychedelic Lockdown Blues – French Artist FAREWELL With New Album ‘SPINOZA’

29 July 2021

Artist: FAREWELL
Who: The folk/nu-classical solo project of French
musician and record label owner Jibé Calluaud.

Album: SPINOZA – third LP

Turn Up The Volume
: Somewhere floating between the mind-exploring dreams
of Syd Barrett and the introspectiveness of Eels where reality and fiction meet and
put up a psychedelic jam for confused minds, insomniacs, and all lost lockdown souls.

From soul-searching reveries with wayward twists and turns (If / Let Them Talk / I Am Multiple / Closure) to fired-up emotions (Lockdown / Scarlatine / Underneath). Intriguing record, intriguing exploit. Don’t say farewell, say hello pleased to meet you.

that hit the scene in 2016

New album: COMFORT TO ME
Second LP after their red-hot self-titled debut (2019)
Out: 10th September 2021 – order info here

New single: SECURITY

“I’m not looking for trouble, I’m looking for love / Let me in your hard heart
Let me in your pub”
sings Amyl over and over again. Look, Amyl, my heart
is open. I fell in love with you the night I saw you explode on stage in a small
club in my home country Belgium (and having a beer and a high-five together
afterward!), back in 2019. The roof went off. Can’t wait for, the new album.

In the meantime, I go mental to Security. What about you, ladies and gents?

Manchester Misfits MISTER STRANGE Kick Out The Jams On ‘LAUGHING WALL’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

29 July 2021

Band: MISTER STRANGE
Who: A Manchester turbine producing heavy
garage psych à la the likes of Ty Segall’s FUZZ,
Thee Oh Sees
and The Stooges.

New EP: I
Out 10 September 2021 via PNKSLM

New single: LAUGHING WALL
Second taster from the upcoming EP

Turn Up The Volume: I love the burning smell of manic riff roughness. This Manchester trio definitely too. They operate like punked-up misfits getting high on MC5 and The Raw Power Stooges. No fake arty farty party for Mister Strange. They just want to kick out the jams while fighting their demons. Hell yeah!

Kick ’em out, motherrockers…

Classic ZZ TOP Cracker To Honor Bassist DUSTY HILL Who Passed Away At 72

Top singles from the past

29 July 2021

DUSTY HILL, the longtime bassist for bearded Texan rock turbo ZZ TOP
has passed away at 72. Hill was on a ‘short detour’ at home to take time
to heal a hip issue, but no cause of death has been reported.

His bandmates Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard posted this message on Facebook:

“We are saddened by the news today that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in
his sleep at home in Houston, TX. We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world,
will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top’. We will forever be connected to that “Blues Shuffle in C.”
You will be missed greatly, amigo.

To honor and remember the man here’s, probably their most famous hit ever…
