Artist: EDWYN COLLINS (Edinburgh Scotland) Single: A GIRL LIKE YOU
Released: In 1994 – 29 years ago Score: #4 in the UK, #6 in Australia and
Top 10 all over Europe
Chum are a pretty kooky combo that got my ears trembling with joy with their
grooves-filled debut LP a few weeks ago. Its lead single Beefake Doctrine is a
manic mind-twister with its trancy beats creating a mesmeric and puzzling
razzmatazz you can’t and you won’t run from.
With 1:18 these post-punk-rock misfits dropped a neurotic caterwaul that goes forth and back with burning pzazz. Monomaniacal vocalist Angus Rogers gets worked up to an almost hysterical level and sounds like a tormented and obsessed soul and the band’s horn duo blow their lungs out with nerve-racking urgency. Blimey!
My Illusion is a head-banging and riff-crushing jackhammer that makes
your fists pump in the air, makes your legs shake, and triggers you to check out
your vocal cords’ potential. Ignore your illusions, just get real and get out to party.
For those about to rock Electric Circus salute you.
DTL’s mastermind LL Schultz‘s expresses her frustration and stressful state of mind
caused by those two claustrophobic pandemic years with this high-strung cry out. Its ominous mid-tempo progression, its swelling intensity advancing over an ongoing
hypnotic guitar riff and her sky-scraping send shivers down your spine.
Lockdown threw Schultz to the mat, but it couldn’t
knock her out and she’s back stronger than ever.
London‘s up-and-coming young dogs DEADLETTER rattle on repeat
on this rad ripper spiced with relentless vocality, a sensuous saxophone,
a pumping bass and a sickly sticky chorus. 5-star punk funk.
With Sub these Chicago dudes sound like a cross between legends Gang Of Four and Parquet Courts. It’s a riff motherrocker making your head spin uncontrollably. On top of it comes the singer’s highly tense vocal performance. Don’t miss this holy smoke cracker.
These noisy indies from Bristol, UK Post-punk at its sharp-cutting best. Neurotic guitars and frenetic drums alternated with freaked-out vocals, rhythm changes that drive you nuts, an instrumental Devo-esque intermezzo and a mind-boggling climax. I have nothing whatsoever to complain about.
Who? A socially caring dark disco duo featuring Ony Godfrey and Fauzan Pratama from Indonesia.
Your Death Is My Glory is about political hypocrisy
that suppresses the common people for their own
benefit.
It’s a steamed-up disco corker. A catchy-as-hell boomer that
accelerates your bloodstream. An irresistible tune to jump up
and down to like mad while giving the middle finger to all
power-greedy politicians.
The video is a DIY rapid-eye-movement tour de force.
All Of A Sudden is a B-side that easily could be an A-side. It features on the 12″ of
the previous single No Reason It’s a rotating beats-banger to start and end all
(il)legal raves with. It’ll make your adrenalin production go through the roof.
Lunar Twin‘s new full-length opus Aurora is an ideal
companion to relax with when the twilight sets.
One of the highlights and my favorite track Cars is a trippy dreamwave
with tingling guitars, scintillating synths, and near-whispering voice
combining for a top-notch vibration.
This masked Italian dance act describe themselves as “losers on a planet
where nobody really wins. He who has nothing to lose cannot lose anything.”
They recently released a must-hear 5-track EP with Juicy Lips as one of the 5 highlights.
A capricious crackerjack for nightclubs where misfits, dropouts, eccentrics and other related outsiders have a ball. Wicked music for wicked people by wicked madcaps.
They decided to invite an impressive cast of musical friends to remix songs
from that album. The collection is namedSee Trough You: Rerealized. You
can buy it here. The digital version will be available from June 2.
Andy Bell of legendary shoegaze band Ride operating under the moniker
of GLOK is one of the remixes. He picked the psych-mind-bending piece I’m Hurt and turned it into an ambient techno stunner with Kraut-rock-like
synth rhythms and chainsaw guitar fragments. Score!
Who? A British quartet inspired by a mutual passion for the sights,
sounds and creative experimentation of the mid to late 1960s with
its unique blend of garage rock, psychedelia and acid folk.
A 60s colored psych-pop gem that could be written by Californian legends
The Mamas & Papas. Layered vocals, jangly guitars (playing backward at
one point. Remember The Beatles‘ Tomorrow Never Knows song?), and an
infectious chorus. Play it 81 times.
“A song inspired by my walks to coffee shops, my friends,
the band TOPS, and the scotch I like to drink!”
Easy-going tunes you can hum and whistle like this one are always welcome on my headphones after having too much noizz buzzing in my ears. Scotch is a laid-back, jaunty, and happy-go-lucky melody enriched with sunlit guitar play. Perfect for a walk in the city on a lazy Spring day. Kelly‘s mellow voice sounds like it was meant to sing devil-may-care songs like this one. Canadacana at its strolling best. Bottoms up!
To celebrate the first anniversary of their debut album 10 MinutesGmbtLife decided to cover a Pixies classic.
They picked one of their best-known songs, Monkey Gone To Heaven from 1989. Their take is pretty special and surprising. They decelerated it and added subtle piano play, distorted guitars, and low-pitched vocals.
Last month British techno champions THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS
unleashed a new single, titled NO REASON. A head-twisting dancefloor
knockout.
Today they released the stomper on 12″ with another new track as B-side,
titled ALL OF A SUDDEN. It’s a rotating beats-booster to start and end all
(il)legal raves with. It’ll make your adrenalin production go through the roof.
New Jersey‘s rock squad THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM
are back after a long hiatus of 8 years.
They are back now with the announcement that a new album, their 6th
is canned (no details yet), and the first single named POSITIVE CHARGE.
Brian Fallon (frontman): “‘Positive Charge’ began as a message of joy to
ourselves and to our audience. The central theme is about looking at the things
you’ve come through and feeling like you want to go ahead with an open heart
toward the future, believing that the best years are not behind any of us and
the good we have is worth something.”
Positive Charge is an out-front rocker invigorated with ablaze guitars,
impassioned vocals, and an anthemic chorus. Welcome back.
Band: EXHALERS Who: The current musical project from Alan Lynn best
known for being the drummer for Northern Irish hard
rock band LaFar.
New single: MEAT CLOWN
A sinewy piece from their third longpalyer out next week.
TUTV: Imagine Nirvana at their fastest and riff-cutting best. Meat Clown is a thunder and lighting corker, a riff monster, a jagged jackhammer, and a steamy speedball that does your head in, the way you like it. The reckless velocity, the paranoid guitar whirlwind, the mean drums-bass machine, the high-strung vocals and last but not least the mammoth chorus combine for a striking sledgehammer you can break bricks with. Inhale before
you start to listen to Exhalers.
Press info: Across Black Light Poster’s eight seismic and engaging tracks, a range of vibes come together in kaleidoscopic display across a spectrum of garage rock, psych, post-punk and surf-pop. There’s a darkness to the light, and a lightness to the dark, all wound tightly around a pop-song core by the blood, sweat, and beers of band. The album, can be defined as a sort of tapestry of challenges that life springs onto you when you’re most vulnerable – but also the importance of holding it together to make it to the other side.
SamPitino (Vocalist): “Thematically, the album touches on such a wide range of human conditions: Love, loss, lust, depression, anxiety, disappointment, forgiveness. And we all experience these things every day, in real life situations: Our romantic relationships, our friendships, our workplaces, our politics. It’s a whole world. And when you take a step back and start to put things into perspective, you see that there’s so much gray area and nothing is black and white. But the gray area is the part that’s interesting – that’s where you can immerse yourself and create stories that hopefully resonate.
There’s a range of vibes on the album. It’s like riding a clanky box car into a dark fun-house. There are things that make you jump in your seat. Others make you squirm a little. There’s distorted things you can’t quite make out, things that make you LOL. And a sudden touch on the shoulder from an invisible hand. Each time you go through, the ride is slightly different, but it’s always a good time – and you’re glad you went.”
TUTV: Answerman is a mean psych-rock machine who know exactly what cutting riffs, hooks and licks are all about. From the kick-off, with the stunning single Black Heart they unleash their sonic demons. They repeat it with bravado on Prophet, Jenny, Smoof and BKND. The let’s roll forward motto of 60s legends The Sonics is not far away on these rippers and Sam Pitino heartfelt voice is a perfect match.
But Answerman is not all about high-voltage turmoil. Check psych pop pearl The Trick
and mid-tempo jangler Trampled and you’ll know what I mean. It suits their dark/light, real/fake, past/present/future, hope/fear vision on this record.
The fact that they recorded this album live says a lot about their goal to keep it all
genuine. No whistles and bells for these four sharp-edged hombres out of Boston.
Straightforward and honest rock ‘n roll smells like Answerman spirit.
The late British avant-garde artist GENESIS P-ORRIDGE (born Neil Andrew Megson in 1950 and departed in 2020), the mastermind and voice behind Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV ic TV, Throbbing Gristle and COUM Transmissions, began their artistic journey in the 1960’s writing poetry.
Heartworm Presspresents a collection of two decades of poetry, from beat to concrete, and shows the progression of the self, beginning the book under the given name of Neil Megson and eventually growing into the enigmatic Genesis P-Orridge.
The book features over 200 never before seen or published poems
including 70 images. It’s out now. Order infoHERE.
It’s the Lips‘ version of The Beatles’ 1967 masterwork Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. If you are familiar (I am for a long time) with these Oklahoma space cowboys you know that anything they do – music, artwork, concerts – sounds, looks and strikes in an eccentric way suggesting they truly come from another planet. From a Phantasia-doped asteriod.
Never forget that former bass player GLEN MATLOCK of the Sex Pistols, who was
at one point kicked out of the band to be replaced by ‘mean-punk-face’ Sid Vicious,
wrote most of the tunes for their one and only album (best punk LP ever in my book).
After the hotheads got fed up with each other and with the manager,
the late Malcolm McLaren, it all ended after their final gig in San Francisco
in 1978.
Matlock never stopped playing. He was part of several lesser-known outfits,
tour bassist for big stars such as Blondie and Iggy Pop and recorded solo LPs
now and then, backed by his mates The Philistines.
Matlock: “The album was written and recorded in Britain over the last 18 months
or so with a posse of seasoned but en point performers. All done during the debacle
that is Brexit and the rise and fall of the turgid Trump episode in the US. These songs
reflect my take on the whole sorry mess that has ensued.”
TUTV: It’s only rock ‘n’ roll but I like it and so does Matlock who always was a rocker
at heart. No arty farty stuff, no whistles and bells, no special effects to clean things up. What you get here is a series of riff-charged firecrackers. And unlike the former Pistol‘s loudmouth hMatlock still has a progressive and liberal mindset. Never mind the bollocks, here’s Matlock.
