TIMOTHY SHOWLATER Aka STRAND OF OAKS Offers Second Stellar Track ‘PARTY AT MONSTER LAKE’ From Upcoming Album

New striking strokes

17 April 2024

STRAND OF OAKS, the musical moniker of Timothy Showalter (born 41 years ago
in Indiana, now living in Austin, Texas) launch LP number 8, titled MIRACLE FOCUS
on June 7.

Showalater: “I spent over three years building Miracle Focus. In the midst of writing,
I became a painter and spent two seasons acting on a television show (Mayans MC).
The dichotomy of painting for days in my garage and then flying out to LA to play
a villainous biker on TV was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life.

The idea of Miracle Focus was born out of one simple concept: to make people feel good.
Throw in a healthy mix of Ram Dass, yoga, Freddie Mercury, Alice Coltrane, and Beastie Boys, plus over a year of writing and building the extremely dense architecture of the songs, and Miracle Focus was born. The result is FUN, wild, rhythmic music filled with synth layering and mantra-like lyrics intended to uplift and hopefully bring some light to whoever listens. In many ways, this record is a love letter to bliss.”

Following last month’s endearing lead single More You Showalater
presents another stellar one, named PARTY AT MONSTER LAKE.

The video clip was shot in The Netherlands by his filmmaker Ruud Gielen.

“‘Party at Monster Lake’ feels like how we want to relive our memories.
Golden sunsets, the best weather, no clock ticking and smiles for days.”“

BELLE AND SEBASTIAN Return In Time With Jaunty Pop Tune ‘WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU, SON?’

Daily noise that works faster than any stimulant

17 April 2024

Photo by Turn Up The Volume

Scottish dream pop veterans BELLE AND SEBASTIAN released
their lauded 12th LP Late Developers last year, in January.

The band just shared a vintage brisk pop tune that somehow didn’t
end up on the album. It’s called WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU, SON? ,

Stuart Murdoch (singer/songwriter): “The song is about my youth, and the funny hole
I fell into in my late teens. I was failing at my university course, failing in almost everything I tried around then. I was obsessed with the music of the time, I used to hang so much on the lyrics and message and feeling of certain bands of the 80s era – it probably wasn’t healthy.

So although the theme of this song is a little accusatory, the fault is with the beholder.
I could have switched off at any time. Instead I let the singers become my penpals and my deities. The song tries to address what happens when the pop stars grow up, and change, and go a different way, and seem to betray the stance they held when you loved them the most.”

B&S at their jaunty pop best.

Impressive new album artwork

TUTV: Slyce is a blistering shoegaze groove that goes stratospheric every time
the imposing chorus kicks in. Layers of galvanizing guitars, a brick-wall solid drum/bass tandem, and hallucinatory vocals combine for a spacey sonic experience. Touchdown.

16 April 1964 – Today 60 Years Ago The Self-Titled Debut LP Of THE ROLLING STONES Came Out

Top longplayers from the past

16 April 2024

60 years ago today, on 16 April 1964, the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in history released their self-titled debut LP. 11 out of the 12 songs were covers of, mostly, American R&B songs, from Chuck Berry, Rufus Thomas, Buddy Holly, Willie Dixon and others.

The only original, written by the glimmer twins Jagger/Richards, was hit single Tell Me.

The album’s front cover was a photo taken by Nicholas Wright. No title or identifying information other than the picture and the Decca logo. An “unheard of” design concept originated by visionary manager Andrew Loog Oldham.

Some notable artists were on the track ‘Little By Little’: Allen Clarke and Graham Nash (both in The Hollies at the time) with backing vocals, crooner Gene Pitney on piano, and infamous producer Phil Spector on percussion and maracas.

The LP topped the UK and Australian charts.

ENGLISH TEACHER – British Indies Astound With Their Multi-Layered And Ingenious Debut Album ‘THIS COULD BE TEXAS’

16 April 2024

Band: ENGLISH TEACHER
Who: Fast up-and-coming inventive
indies from Leeds, UK.

Press photo

Debut album: THIS COULD BE TEXAS

NME: “The fantastic and the everyday collide on this landmark debut – an adventure in
sound and words. What you have in ‘This Could Be Texas’ is everything you want from a
debut; a truly original effort from start to finish, an adventure in sound and words, and
a landmark statement.

Poised for big things? Who knows if this industry even allows that anymore. Here are
a band already dealing in brilliance, though – who dare to dream and have it pay off.
Not everyone gets to go to space, but at least English Teacher make it a damn site
more interesting being stuck down here.” Score: 5/5.

TUTV: English Teacher are special, their debut LP is special. It sounds indie,
but certainly not in a familiar way when it comes to the stunning creativity
and striking architecture of the songs.

Expect a mix of prog-rock dynamics, bits and pieces for a reality musical, wayward euphony and sudden, yet accessible changes of pace and flow, rhythms and moods.

You really need several spins to get into This Could Be Texas but once the mist is gone
you’ll be dazzled by its sheer ingeniousness and the impact of frontwoman Lily Fontaine, vocally and emotionally. This could easily be one of the best longplayers of the year including one of the best singles of the year with ‘The World’s Biggest Paving Slab‘.

Listen To Brand New LENNON/McCARTNEY Song ‘PRIMROSE HILL’

16 April 2024

Just like that, totally unexpected, we get a brand-new
Lennon/McCartney song, not a John/Paul one that is,
but a Sean/James one.

James McCartney is a son of Paul and his late mother Linda Eastman,
and Sean Lennon is the son of his late genial dad John and Yoko Ono.

Both are singer/songwriters themselves who released/release
music now and then solo, and/or with a band.

James just shared a brand-new romantic musing, titled PRIMROSE HILL
written with Sean. He introduced it on social media. “I had a vision as a child
in Scotland, on what was a lovely summers day. Letting go, I saw my true love and
saviour in my mind’s eye. ‘Primrose Hill’ is about getting the ball rolling with me
and finding this person.”

John and Paul will love the melancholic timbre.

BLUR Not Happy With The COACHELLA Crowd

Britpop heroes BLUR played a best-of set at Coachella Festival last
weekend. But the crowd wasn’t into it, which annoyed frontman Damon
Albarn
, especially during classic earworm Girls & Boys when he addressed
the audience: “You’re never seeing us again, so you might as well fucking sing it.
Know what I’m saying?
”

This was London last year.
