WINGS – Macca & Co Released Their 4th LP ‘VENUS AND MARS’ 50 Years Ago Today

Longplayers from yesteryear

27 May 2025

In 1971, a year after the Fab Four split up, yesterday beatle PAUL McCARTNEY formed WINGS, featuring his wife Linda on keyboards, and former Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine.

Their 4th LP, titled VENUS AND MARS came out on 27 May 1975, today 50 years ago.
It followed their foremost album Band On The Run, that was released the year before.

It hit the #1 spot in the UK, US, New Zealand, Canada, Norway and Spain.

The record’s cover, which Paul summed up as “a package that would be nice to get, and also something recognizable” was photographed by Linda, depicting two billiard balls in a black background, which are yellow and red to fit the colours of the planets Venus and Mars.

AllMusic said: “One of McCartney’s more consistent listens, even though it’s possible to scan the song listing after several listens and not recognize any song outside of “Listen to What the Man Said” and the opening medley by title.” Score: 3/5.

BLACK MARKET KARMA – British Psych Outfit Release New LP ‘MELLOWMAKER’ On June 6th

26 May 2025

Band: BLACK KARMA MARKET
Who: London-born, Dartford-based unit formed
in 2011 by singer-songwriter Stanley Belton.

Album: MELLOWMAKER
Their 12th longplayer overall, their 2nd for Fuzz Club,
following last year’s Wobble LP. It’ll land on June 6th.

Album artwork

Crafted entirely by Stanley Belton —who writes, records, and produces everything himself— the record embraces analogue imperfections and tape wobble, splicing them with modern techniques to create a “cassette-ified” lo-fi psychedelia blending ‘60s pop, ‘90s neo-psych, and crunchy hip-hop breakbeats.

Belton: “Mellowmaker was made immediately after Wobble, I kinda see them as two sides
of each other. With these two albums I’ve attempted to crystallise how it feels to be stuck between a feeling of amnesia of the soul and the earthly experience of piloting a meat suit…
I’m still chasing that longing intangible ‘Hiraeth’ feeling. The sense of wanting to find our way home to a place that maybe doesn’t exist.”

UNIVERSITY – British Punk Smart Arses Drop Another Splinter Bomb With ‘GTA ONLINE’

Daily noise that works faster than a stream of caffeine

26 May 2025

British post-hard-core-punk smart arses UNIVERSITY are
knocking hard and loud at the iron gates of indie madness.

Back in 2023 they presented themselves to the world with their 5-track debut
EP Title Track. A ferocious hellraiser of an extended play. Think Pigs x 7 x 2.

From there on, the Crewe, Cheshire- based turbine started to write/record their debut
full length, titled McCartney, It’ll Be OK . It’s now ready to be unleashed on June 10th.
More info here

But first taster #3, called GTA ONLINE. Nearly four minutes of gargantuan rock akin
to the cult early Biffy Clyro records. The band say: “I tire an old, sick man, tedious dreams
of Bosch, oh do not ask what is it. I do not want to know.”
Come again!

Wake up people, time for school.

UNCUT Magazine Presents The Ultimate Music Guide to LOU REED

25 May 2025

English glossy music monthly UNCUT presents another Ultimate Music Guide.
This time the late genial LOU REED is the focus of attention.

This 148-page deluxe edition celebrates 60 years of Lou’s mature songwriting.
Whether it was the influential sedition of his early work, his unexpected rebirth as
a pop star via the intervention of David Bowie, the adversarial, unexplained soundworld
of Metal Machine Music, through to Lulu, his album with Metallica and his last ambient works, his was a career to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Outside of the music there was clearly a lot going on. For all Laurie Anderson’s efforts
to posthumously rehabilitate Reed as a dog lover, Tai chi master and amateur watch repairer, loving partner, family member and electronics whiz, we’re still compelled
by the jaggedness of the man. The horrifying onstage schtick. The interviews that
make your blood run cold. It’s rage-filled, often misanthropic and it’s complicated.

These days, Lou’s archives (his tapes, his doo wop records, college accreditations, and clippings archive; his swords, but not his hats) are in the special collections department of New York Public Library. One of the most interesting artefacts to be discovered, however, may have been one of the first, found behind Lou’s work desk.

You can purchase a copy and have it sent to your home. Info HERE.

NEIL YOUNG And THE CHROME HEARTS Talk To The Trees

25 May 2025

Every NEIL YOUNG fan (including me) knows for a couple of months now, that their
79-year-old rock idol has recorded an album with his new band The Chrome Hearts .
It’s namedTalkin’ To The Trees, and shows up on June 12th.

Press info: “Talkin To The Trees is a personal and powerful album featuring ten new compositions by Young. “Big Change”, the first song from the album, was released in January 2025, with a message that left no doubt where Neil Young stands in these challenging times.

The Chrome Hearts are Spooner Oldham (Organ); Micah Nelson (Guitar and Vocal); Corey McCormick (Bass and Vocal); Anthony LoGerfo (Drums); with Neil Young (Guitar, Harp, Piano, Vibes). The album is co-produced by Lou Adler and Young, and recorded at Shangri La Studios in Malibu.”

Following the racy lead single Lets Roll Again we can enjoy a vintage,
heart of gold ballad with the LP’s title track TALKIN TO THE TREES.
