The brothers Ron and Russell Mael known to the world as SPARKS
are around since 1966. Yes, that’s 59 years and no sign of retirement.
Music is the dominant element in their DNA. They can’t stop.
They released their 28th (!) album, entitled MAD! last May.
1971
Today RON, the oldest, the weird one, celebrates his 80th birthday.
He was born on 12 August 1945 in Culver City, California. Congratulations.
Fin Power (vocalist): “The track is a reaction to having had some of our control taken away for a chance of radio or viral success. Sonically ‘NEVER AGAIN’ is lightning in a bottle. Tracked live, it captures the band’s aggressive energy, exploding into its choruses before hitting even harder as the song ends.”
Lyrically, the track highlights the emotional journey of turning to sobriety whilst dealing with the fallout of our major label experience. The anger of feeling like a scratchcard for the previous label and the feeling of pride that succumbs under the anger drove the writing of the lyrics.”
JEHNNY BETH, France-born, former frontwoman of female post-punk band Savages (2011-2017), released her solo debut album Love Is To Live back in
2020. A year later, she teamed up with Primal Scream‘s maestroBobby Gillespie
for a romantic duet longplayer, called Utopian Ashes.
Last May, she revealed details of her 2nd solo full-length.
It’s baptized You Heartbreaker You and will land on August 29th.
She wrote/made the album with partner/collaborator Johnny Hostile.
Beth: “We’re living in a dark time, full of drama and barbarous tragedy.
It became clear to me that, in these times, we either learn how to scream
really well, or we learn how to whisper.”
Beth said she wanted to make a LOUD record. And she definitely did.
All 4 singles are harsh hellraisers. Yep, this new one is no exception.
It’s a brain-breaking, industrial sledgehammer. Wowzers!
In order to not miss a beat TURN UP THE VOLUME scans the musical
horizon daily, for 10 years now, to pick ace tracks and add 5 new ones
twice per week, to the one and only JUKEBOX playlist that matters.
ALL TOGETHER
The 5 fresh ones TRACK BY TRACK
Band: SUNFLOWERS Who: Disorderly trio from Portugal. They make noise like it’s a language of survival. Their sound blends blistering punk energy with layers of distortion, experimental chaos, and existential release — always teetering between catharsis and collapse.
The new album pinballs between noise rock, punk, warped psych,
and a sort of mangled pop sensibility. It’s loud and sharp-edged, but
with moments of eerie restraint, like falling through a trapdoor into
calm, then being hurled back into chaos.
TUTV: Blimey. Make sure you warn your neighbors that a sonic storm is coming,
before Chameleon Kid explodes on your wobbling stereo, to avoid that they call
the anti-decibels police. This jagged bass-drum-fueled juggernaut rushes and
races like a hopped-up hot rod on psychedelic steroids. Helter skelter!
Artists: ARTHUR BUCK Who: R.E.M.’s Peter Buck and
singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur.
Track: SLEEP WITH ONE EYE OPEN
First single from their 2nd, collaborative
longplayer, landing on October 3rd.
Arthur: “To be the protector, or perhaps the paranoid partner?
This one introduces some wah-wah lead work by me, which becomes
a bit more prevalent as the album continues. Intense background
vocals by Corin Tucker from Sleater-Kinney and a welcome horn
section give it even more classic rock gravitas.”
TUTV: Titanic tune. It sounds like if a full
orchestra is at work. Bluesy, rocky, kicky.
A full-hearted feat.
Band: ALPINE SKIES Who: Mutual friends, Kevin Homan and Darren Farrell from Dublin, Ireland. They discovered an instant creative chemistry that would soon unfold into what will be their debut album – an evocative, layered collection of songs shaped by wide skies, still landscapes, and inner journeys.
Track: WALLS
Only their 2nd single, following
their debut Be Your Side.
“Walls” holds the value of memories at its core. Valuing,
not loss or absence, but the fact that something ever was.
TUTV: This robust drums-propelled power pop stroke goes sky-high on
its adrenaline-infused chorus, strengthened by its engrossing vocality.
A rock-solid wall of a tune.
Info: “Letters is a perfect introduction to the band’s music with it’s two lead vocalists singing in a dialogue in this melodic, storytelling dynamic track. The song is about two lovers far apart from each other, both in time and distance.”
TUYV: Americana the Finnish way. Dreamy harmonies, acoustic guitar sparks in front, melancholic melodiousness, impassioned vocals. Letters is a sepia-colored romantic musing that entices and enthralls quickly.
Last year Spanish power pop señoritas HINDS released
their jaunty 4th longplayer, called Viva Hinds.
It featured Turn Up The Volume‘s number 1 track
of 2024, the fab-tastic pop diamond SUPERSTAR.
Last Friday, the girls were in Belgium again (pictures below).
They played Lokerse Feesten – Belgium. And I had to
see them again. Always party time with the Madrid chicas.

The immortal King hit the No.1 spot in the US with his double
single DON’T BE CRUEL / HOUND DOG this day 69 years ago,
on 11 August 1956.
The pair of songs remained at the top seat for a record-breaking 11 weeks. Presley would hold the record until he was surpassed in 1992, by soul band Boyz II Men’s sugary tearjerker End Of The Road.
Daily noise that works faster than a stream of caffeine

Band: BABYMETAL Who: The Japanese Kawaii metal trio, that blends elements of
heavy metal and J-pop that was pioneered in Japan in the early
2010s sensation.
Baby Metal is often credited with the
creation and success of Kawaii metal.
I know they’re a corporate-controlled band using session musicians in
the studio. But (there’s always a but) they write almost all of their songs
and have a huge impact and involvement in producing the sound they
want.
Anyway, I really dig their mind-blowing ballyhoo,
their glamorous look, and their confident attitude.
Last Frida,y they launched their 5th LP,
named Metal Forth (stream it below).
The same day, they also shared a new video clip for monstrous single MY QUEEN, which features Canadian metal act Spiritbox‘ vociferous
vocalist Courtney LaPlante. Watch it below.
Artist:GUNNA Who: Mega rap star, born named Sergio Giavanni Kitchens, 32 years
ago in College Park, Georgia. He has 2 blockbuster hits which have
more than 1 billion streams of Spotify.
Album:THE LAST WUN
His brand new 6th one.
It was launched last Friday.
