THE POP GROUP With Post Punk Classic ‘SHE’S BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL’ (1979)

Last Saturday the sad news of the passing of 62-year old MARK STEWART
best known as the astounding frontman of experimental post-punk band
THE POP GROUP from Bristol who hit the scene back 1977. He also recorded
multiple albums solo and collaborated with lots of other artists.

Their innovative, mercurial, and left politics-infused
debut LP Y is still regarded as a classic album of the era.

The album’s wilful single SHE IS BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL
(more than 1 million streams on Spotify) is one of their
unforgettable exploits.

In memoriam of Mark Stewart. R.I.P

40 Years Ago – SISTERS OF MERCY With ‘TEMPLE OF LOVE’

23 April 2023

‘TEMPLE OF LOVE’ by SISTERS OF MERCY
came out in October 1983, 40 years ago.
It was a non-album track.

The song was written by the band’s general Andrew Eldritch. It was the fifth SOM single. Despite the fact that Temple Of Love became a classic corker in Goth-rock it did not chart on the UK’s main singles chart, but it reached number one for a week on the UK Indie Chart and stayed on the chart for 36 weeks.

Watch.

And they’re not done yet.

20 April 2023

Northern Irish pop-punk heroes THE UNDERTONES released their most famous
and lauded debut single TEENAGE KICKS 45 years ago today (21 October 1978).

It was written by guitarist John O’Neill.

Upon first hearing the classic in September 1978, the late great (1939-2004)
BBC Radio DJ John Peel is reported to have burst into tears, and readily admitted
to still being moved to tears upon hearing the song in interviews granted to
journalists up until his death.

I wanna hold her wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night

Go, Feargal.

‘STOB YOUR SOBBING’ By THE PRETENDERS – 1979

16 April 2023

Power pop heroes PRETENDERS fronted by the utterly charismatic
Chrissie Hynde released their tremendously infectious poppy debut
single STOP YOUR SOBBING in 1979, amidst the punk explosion
in the UK.

It was a cover. The original was written by kink Ray Davies about
a crying girlfriend he broke up with. It was released as a single in
1964 only in… South-Africa!

Guess what? Ray Davies & Chrissie Hynde had a relationship and
a child. No sobbing for them, until they split up sometime later.

C’mon Chrissie.

Track/Video: CELEBRITY SKIN
Year: 1998

You love her or you hate her.
I love her and even more after
I saw her playing live twice.

When I wake up in my makeup
Have you ever felt so used up as this?
It’s all so sugarless, hooker/waitress
Model/actress, oh, just go nameless!
Honeysuckle, she’s full of poison
She obliterated everything she kissed
Now she’s fading somewhere in Hollywood
I’m glad I came here with your pound of flesh

Makes me wish that I could be a dog
When I see the price that you pay
