COVER OF THE WEEK – Graceful TOYAH And Her Rhythm Slaves

19 August 2022

TOYAH and ROBERT FRIPP do not need an introduction whatsoever anymore,
if you ask me (also if you don’t ask me). Both had/have notable successful careers
and both together have their Sunday lunch on YouTube, every week for more
than two years now.

About 2 months ago the lovebirds picked Grace Jones‘s giant 1985 hit
Slave to the Rhythm to entertain us with it on the laziest day of the week.

Recently T & R recorded their cover of that soulful pearl, fully orchestrated,
as a new Toyah single, and shared an accompanying video so you can join
sexy Toyah for a little dance to this sensuous interpretation with her seductive
posh pop voice as the star in the middle and the trippy guitars of King Robert
and Simon Darlow on the sides, left and right. They’re rhythm slaves to Toyah.

Sway
your hips, ladies, and gents.

The gracious original

And more TOYAH news.

Remastered and expanded editions of her Gold-selling album
Anthem (which turned 20 years last year) will be launched on
9 September.

Daily electricity to load your batteries

12 August 2022

Artist: ANDREA GILLIS

Who: “Hailing from South Boston, Andrea Gillis is the real deal – a Northeast
legend of rock, soul, jazz and blues. “She has been blessed with the pipes
of Etta James and with the boozy swagger of Jim Morrison.” – The Boston Globe

Albums: Want Another? and Ladies Love Thunder (2008)

New single: I DON’T NEED YOU NO MORE

It’s a towering cover of a classic 1971 cracker of American
rock heroes THE J. GEILS BAND from their The Morning After LP.

Gillis‘ version of I DON’T NEED YOU NO MORE is a full-on thunderclap. She rattles and rumbles, she moves and grooves, and she rawks and rolls big time. A sizzling triumph!

Peter Wolf (J. Geils Band’s charismatic frontman) said: “Andrea Gillis takes this Geils’
tune and rocks the house with it in a way that Etta James might‘ve done…She kicks it high!”
.
Say no more.

9 August 2022

Alluring Filipino-British singer-songwriter BEABADOOBEE (born Beatrice Kristi Laus,
22 years ago in Iloilo City, Philippines, now living in London) released her 2nd sparkling
pop full-length Beatopia 3 weeks ago.

Before starting her world tour to promote Beatopia she stopped by the studio
of SiriusXM (a broadcasting company headquartered in Midtown Manhattan, NYC
that provides satellite radio and online radio services) where she played a gracious
cover version of Here’s Where The Story Ends, a sweet pearl by former British
dream popsters The Sundays.

Lovely…

Toyah and Robert with their weekly lunch sessions

25 July 2022

They’re adults but behave like naughty teenagers.
They love AC/DC but don’t know what black looks like.

She is the ice girl who shoots
rubber bands at the camera.

He’s the boy who plays
hard rock the nasty way
Bo Diddley would do it!

Cheerleader TOYAH And Rebel ROBERT Yell

Wow! Toyah jumping forth and back, and up and down like an 18-year-old
cheerleader, while she yells like a rebel at Robert (and us), excites the senses.

Oh yeah, the two YouTube idols score once again.

Coincidence or not but the blond punk God Billy Idol
released his self-titled debut LP 40 years ago (16 July 1982).

Anyway, take a deep breath,
ladies, and gents, and YELL!

It helps to kick off a new week…

C’mon Billy, you can still yell too…

Cover(s) Of The Week – ‘TAINTED LOVE / BOYS DON’T CRY’ By RED SPOT RHYTHM SECTION

Band: RED SPOT RHYTHM SECTION
Who: A roots rock rhythm section from Chicago

Tracks: Tainted Love / Boy’s Don’t Cry

– TAINTED LOVE –

RSRS speed up the giant 1981 Soft Cell hit (actually written by American songwriter
Ed Cobb in 1964 and recorded by Gloria Jones in the same year, but with no real success),
add some Ska dynamics, and create a summer feel with a glowing 60s Booker T. & the M.G.’s organ sound, while singer Claire Liparulo signs for swinging and sunlit vocals.

Sometimes you feel like you’ve got to run away…

.
– BOYS DON’T CRY –

Here RSRS go for a slowed-down, vintage reggae vibe version of The Cure‘s 1979 blockbuster. It’s a hip-swaying take with a tasty summer 2022 sauce and soulful
vocals by Erthe St. James

Shake your booty, folks…

JULIAN LENNON Covers His Father’s Classic ‘IMAGINE’ For STAND FOR UKRAINE Charity Organisation

6 June 2022

John Lennon‘s oldest son Julian about covering Imagine for the very first time:

“I had always said, that the only time I would ever consider singing “Imagine” would be if it was the ‘End of the World’. The War on Ukraine is an unimaginable tragedy. As a human, and as an artist, I felt compelled to respond in the most significant way I could. The song reflects the light at the end of the tunnel, that we are all hoping for.

In April, he performed the track for the first time (with Nuno Bettencourt on acoustic guitar) as part of the Stand Up For Ukraine campaign event, a global fund-raising effort broadcast from Warsaw, Poland.

Watch here…

Now Julian released his Imagine cover officially with a great portion
of the proceeds going to the Stand For Ukraine charity organisation.
You can stream/buy the track here.
