The First Stone BRIAN JONES Passed Away 50 Years Ago Today – He Was Only 27…

3 July 2019

50 years ago today, on 3 July 1969 Lewis Brian Hopkin Jones aka BRIAN JONES, musical genius, troubled mind and co-founder of THE ROLLING STONES drowned in his swimming pool, only 27 years old. The coroner’s report stated ‘death by misadventure‘ and noted that his liver and heart were heavily enlarged by drug and alcohol abuse.

He was born on 20 February 1942 in Cheltenham, UK. When he was 20 he placed an advertisement in a London magazine called Jazz News in May 1962, inviting musicians to audition for a new R & B group. The rest is Rolling Stones history. An extended bio of the legendary, highly influential multi-instrumentalist and controversial character right here.

Here’s a short photo montage and tribute to The First Stone while
applicable song ‘I’m Not Like Everybody Else‘ by The Kinks plays over it…

ERIC CLAPTON Released Solo Debut Album ‘461 OCEAN BOULEVARD’ 45 Years Ago…

1 July 2019

Blues addict at heart and globally adored guitar hero ERIC CLAPTON released his commercially and critically successful solo debut album ‘461 OCEAN BOULEVARD
this day 45 years ago, on 1 July 1974. After his one-album Blind Faith supergroup experience and his equally short-lived Derek And The Dominos project Clapton
decided to do it all (mostly) by himself and smoother than before.

ALL MUSIC wrote: “Although there are some new reggae influences, the album doesn’t
sound all that different from the rock, pop, blues, country, and R&B amalgam of Clapton. However, 461 Ocean Boulevard is a tighter, more focused outing that enables him to
stretch out instrumentally.”
– Score: 4.5/5 – Full review here

Turn Up The Volume‘s highlights: Motherless Children / Willie And The Hand Jive /
Let It Grow
and of course, I Shot The Sheriff, a cool cover of the Bob Marley classic…

PINK FLOYD Released Second Longplayer ‘A SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS’ 53 Years Ago…

29 June 2019

This day 53 years ago, on 28 June 1966 space rock legends PINK FLOYD released their second album ‘A SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS‘. The last on which co-founder Syd Barrett appeared on (only one of the songs – Jugband Blues – he played on ended up on the LP). He became, due to his drugs influenced behavior, unmanageable and was replaced during recordings by David Gilmour.

ALL MUSIC wrote: “A transitional album on which the band moved from Syd Barrett’s relatively concise and vivid songs to spacy, ethereal material with lengthy instrumental passages. The band begin to map out the dark and repetitive pulses that would characterize their next few records”.

THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION Released Debut LP ‘FREAK OUT!’ 53 Years Ago Today…

History

27 June 2019

freak

Today 53 years ago, on 27 June 1966, the late great eccentric FRANK ZAPPA and his erratic band THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION released (double) debut album FREAK OUT!. Often named as one of rock music’s first concept albums it was also one of the first double ones. The record was Zappa‘s satirical perception of the American pop culture at the time and of the nascent freak scene of Los Angeles. It meant also the start of the virtuoso’s spectacular and astounding career.

40 Years Ago NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE Released Live Album ‘RUST NEVER SLEEPS’…

History

22 June 2019

neil.jpg

Today 40 years ago, on 22 June 1979, eternal rocker in the free world NEIL YOUNG
and CRAZY HORSE released live album titled RUST NEVER SLEEPS. Most of the songs were recorded at show at San Francisco’s Boarding House and some cuts were registered elsewhere during the band’s late 1978 tour. Overdubs were done later in studios. Besides a few exceptions audience noise was removed as much as possible from the LP. It peaked
at #8 on the US chart and reached #13 in the UK.

Paul Nelson of Rolling Stone Magazine wrote at the time: For anyone still passionately in love with rock & roll, Neil Young has made a record that defines the territory. Defines it, expands it, explodes it. Burns it to the ground. ‘Rust Never Sleeps’ tells me more about my life, my country and rock & roll than any music I’ve heard in years. Like a newfound friend or lover pledging honesty and eager to share whatever might be important, it’s both a sampler and a synopsis — of everything: the rocks and the trees, and the shadows between the rocks and the trees. CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND HIS MAGIC BAND Released ‘TROUT MASK REPLICA’ 50 Years Ago…

16 June 2019

This day 50 years ago, on 16 June 1969, the late great, eccentric and highly influential blues-rock phenomenon CAPTAIN BEEFHEART assisted by HIS MAGIC BAND released double album ‘TROUT MASK REPLICA‘. It was his third longplayer and probably the most lauded one by almost all critics, then and now.

The famous late Rolling Stone Magazine Lester Bangs wrote at the time: “It’s very gratifying to say that Captain Beefheart’s new album is a total success, a brilliant, stunning enlargement and clarification of his art. Which is not to say that it’s in any sense slick, “artistic,” or easy. This is one of the few bands whose sound has actually gotten rawer as they’ve matured—a brilliant and refreshing strategy. Again the rhythms and melodic textures jump
all over the place (in the same way that Cecil Taylor’s do), Beefheart singing like a lonesome werewolf screaming and growling in the night. The songs clatter about—given a superficial listening, they seem boring and repetitious. It’s perhaps the addition of saxophones (all played by the five men in the band) that first suggests what’s really happening here and always has been happening in this group’s music.”

THE WHITE STRIPES Released Their Self-Titled Rough Blues Debut Album 20 Years Ago…

14 June 2019

20 years ago, on 15 June 1999, unknown Detroit blues rockers THE WHITE STRIPES released their self-titled debut LP. It was all about raw and rough, scream & hit DIY blues racket. Only a few critics noticed the record upon its release, but one famous one, the late great JOHN PEEL spotted it in a shop when it came out and said: “I just liked the look of it and I looked at the titles – you develop an instinct, d’you know what I mean? And it looked like the sort of record I would like, so I took it out and I did like it, and started playing it.” The rest
is history.

Here’s a perfect idea of the early The White Stripes with
a ramshackle live version of ‘Suzy Lee‘ one of the LP’s tracks…
