The late American singer/songwriter EDWIN STARR (real name: Charles Edwin Hatcher) would have celebrated his 81st birthday today. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee
on 21 January 1942.
He scored his biggest hit with WAR. An anti-Vietnam song written by Motown artists Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, released in 1970. Unfortunately still dangerously relevant today.

Iconic voice/performer JANIS JOPLIN with her unique hoarse voice would
have celebrated her 80th birthday today (born 19 January 1943). Happy 80!.
If you never heard of her you must be living on Mars, I guess.
Unfortunately, she partied too hard and messed up her young life with heroin.
On 4 October 1970, after an accidental overdose she passed away, only 27, joining
the sad 27-club (Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, blues pioneer Robert Johnson/. Joplin was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame in 1995.

ANITA POINTER, the founder/vocalist of soul pop trio THE POINTER SISTERS passed away after battling cancer,
surrounded by her family in her home in Beverly Hills.
She was 74.
Anita and her sisters grew up singing in their dad’s church. In
the tenth grade Anita played alto sax as a member of the McRae
High School band. In 1969 Anita quit her job as a secretary to join
her younger sisters Bonnie, June and Ruth to form The Pointer Sisters.
JET BLACK, drummer and co-founder of new-post-punk-wave
heroes THE STRANGLERS has passed away, aged 84.
Press statement: “Jet Black, born Brian John Duffy, passed away peacefully
at home on Tue 6th Dec. A founding member of iconic British new-wave rock band The Stranglers, Jet helped the band achieve a prolific 23 top 40 singles and 19 top 40 albums in the official UK charts.
As the ‘elder statesmen’ of the group, Jet was already a successful businessman in the Guildford area when The Stranglers formed in 1974. Jet owned a fleet of ice cream vans,
one of which, as many fans will fondly remember, was used to tour the UK in the early years. Jet also owned an off license, the upstairs apartment of which doubled as ‘Stranglers HQ’ in the early days.
Jet retired from performing live with The Stranglers in 2015 having suffered with respiratory health issues since childhood. Despite difficulties in performing towards the end of his career, Jet’s charismatic charm resonated with fans who would endlessly chant his name as he took his place at the drums.
As a drummer in jazz bands during the 60s, Jet’s playing style
helped shape The Stranglers’ unique sound.
On reaction to the news, bassist and co-frontman JJ Burnel said “The welcoming committee has doubled. After years of ill health Jet has finally been released. He was a force of nature. An inspiration. The Stranglers would not have been if it wasn’t for him. The most erudite of men. A rebel with many causes. Say hi to Dave for me.”
This genius doesn’t need an introduction. He was born John Winston Lennon
on 9 October 1940 in Liverpool, 82 years ago. Happy B. to one of the greatest
in rock history. As we know a psycho killed him in 1980. Lennon was only 40.
Five years ago today, on 2 October 2017, the pure all-around Americana (from Gamesville, Florida) rocker at heartTOM PETTY passed away following an accidental drug overdose.
He was only 66. With his band The Heartbreakers he made 13 studio LPs, solo
he canned 3 longplayers and he released two albums with supergroup Traveling Wilburys (Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Petty).

Our kid William John Paul Gallagher was born in Burnage, Manchester
on 21 September 1972, the son of Irish immigrants.
Happy 50 to the man of the people, raised on the streets of Manchester, playing for the people. He’s the ultimate rock ‘n’ roll star singing happy-go-lucky chants made to be sung along under the shower, in your car, and at his massive concerts. No arty farty shit, only supersonic earworms.
Liam a couple of weeks ago…
It was the original Oasis bassist Paul McGuigan (Guigsy) who asked Liam to join his band Rain in the late 80s. He became the lead singer/frontman. When his brother Noel joined in 1991 the name was changed to Oasis. Noel was the 24 Carat songwriter, but Liam was the voice, the face, the hero, the one-liner champion, and the wonderwall of the band.

With Oasis he recorded 7 studio LPs. After the umpteenth fight with his brother in 2009
at a Paris festival the group split. Liam formed Beady Eye with the other Oasis members, made two longplayers, and called it a day as his heart wasn’t in it and started his victorious journey. His 3 LPs (so far) all went number one in the UK and his ecstatic concerts attract as many fans as before with Oasis.
You love or hate him. I love him, especially live (saw him 27 times
with Oasis, 2 times with Beady Eye and, so far, 4 times solo.)
Singer/actress OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN was born in Cambridge, England 73 years ago. Tonight she lost her battle with breast cancer. She died on her Ranch in Southern California
