TRACK BY TRACK

Band: AUS!Funkt
Who: Post-punk misfits from Toronto, embracing in the process
the elements of electronica, dub, disco, garage rock and blues
while maintaining grittiness, simplicity, and repetitiveness.

Track: PROLOGUE (SHALLOW).
My favorite cut of their new dance-crazy
EP Hey! I See You.

If your limbs don’t get activated by this stomping synth stunner
it’s time to get on the phone and fire your shrink. Right now.

For everybody else, shake your booty.

Toronto‘s noise generator METZ celebrate the 10th anniversary
of their smashing self-titled debut LP with a new tour.

Along the tour announcement, the trio shared two tracks, of which one is
pretty special. COME ON DOWN features their longtime friend Joe Talbot
of Bristol punks Idles.

A perfect match in noise hell.

Band: ON
Who: An punk-rock-experienced Toronto trio

New album: ON
Released: 20 September 2022 via Indiestructable Records

Closing cracker AMENDS is my kind of electrical eruption.
It’s an imposing Led-Zeppelin-like heavy blues-rock knockout
including unhinged wah-wah electricity. Nasty stuff!

No, it’s not Jimmy Page on guitar, or is it?

American/Celtic punks DROPKICK MURPHYS have their 11th album, named
This Guitar Still Kills Fascists out on 30 September. The LP accentuates
the sharp-cutting lyrics of the late great and heavily influential (ask Bob Dylan)
American folk hero Woody Guthrie (1912-1967).

If you’re a Murphys fan you know what to do when
this massive chant ALL YOU FONIES comes on.
Yes, screaming your lungs out.

Hallelujah!

Band: DEAD LEVEE
Who: Old-school no-nonsense five-piece rock
band from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

New single SHOUT is a wallbreaker, a let-it-all-out loud haymaker.
Think The Black Crows and Guns ‘n Roses have a nasty rollicking riff fight.
I wonder if it’s Axl Rose who’s screaming his head off in the end.

Holy riff smoke.
Play it to the max.

Band: ALEX JAMES
Who: A wheelchair-fronted, high-energy
alternative rock band from the North East.

New single: TELL ME

Expect a rollicking ripper bucking up all the way. A sterling crackerjack that
scurries full tilt with steamy swagger pushed by a flat-out rhythm section,
storming guitars – think Black Sabbath‘s Paranoid riff – and James‘ lively
vocals. When the sizzling chorus kicks in, it’s go mental time.

Tell all your friends about this exuberant score!

Band: DETROIT REBELLION
Who: Singer/songwriter/guitarist Jeff Tostee uniquely exploring
a world of gritty blues and garage rock with drummer Micaiah
Castro
, taking their name from the 1967 Detroit Riot

New single: CLAP OF THUNDER
From the forthcoming – 3rd – album
Fake News, due this fall.

This red-hot-roaring corker thunders all the way with
turned-up decibels for the psychotic guitar-charged chorus.
Think Queens oF The Stone Age fronted by Jack White.

Hurry yourself to a green field and freak out.

Chicago‘s bombastic veteran rockers THE SMASHING PUMPKINS
orchestrated by main man Billy Corgan are back in town.

Next year, on 23 April, they’ll share their new longplayer
ATUM: A Rock Opera In Three Acts with the world,
with no less than 33 songs.

The first single is an uppercut called BEGUILED.
A mid-tempo upper with a rotating heavy metal riff.

Nice one, Billy.

Artist: JEEN
Who: All-round Canadian singer/songwriter who has written for many recording
artists such as ‘Great Big Sea’, ‘Serena Ryder’, ‘Res’, ‘Hawksley Workman’, ‘Brendan Canning’, ‘FUWA FUWA’, Martin ‘Doc’ McKinney and more. She was a member of ‘Cookie Duster‘ with ‘Brendan Canning‘ of ‘Broken Social Scene‘.

New single: CHEMICAL EMOTION
It’s the lead-off track of new – her 6th – album Tracer, out October 21st.

Jeen: “It’s about letting yourself drift in the flow of everything and hanging
on as hard as you can to what makes the shitty parts more tolerable.”

After only one spin, you’ll know that Chemical Emotion is a mesmerizing humdinger.
Jeen‘s emotive voice bewitches right away, the mid-tempo cadence emphasizes
the meditative reflection perfectly, the compelling chorus brings Alanis Morissette
to mind, and overall the orchestral sonority and the layered harmonies lead to
a thrilling triumph.

And I know it sounds trite, but you made impossible possible sometimes

Band: WIDOWS GOLD
Who: Riveting rock outfit from Costa Messa, California that
made an auspicious entrance onto the music scene last year.

New single: I CAN’T HELP YOU
From their upcoming debut LP, out January 2013.

Expect a melancholic smooth guitar pop uplifter. The brisk combination of a jaunty rhythm section, flickering guitars, a toe-tapping melody, a contagious chorus, and last but not least Madeline Star‘s soulful and romantic voice, turn I Can’t Help You into a glam gem.

Help yourself right here.

PPhoto by Arne Frøkedal

Band: MISTY COAST
Who: Chamber psych-pop duo – Linn Frøkedal
and Richard Myklebust – from Norway.

New single: THE END OF THE BEGINNING

For this new composition, the duo’s minds went down memory lane
to get inspired by the musical preferences of their
adolescent years.

They came back and cemented the experiences of those bygone
times for the future, in a song. The End Of The Beginning is a shoegaze rainbow,
but one that’s sepia colored. The mood is blue-sky, idyllic, and halcyon. So is
the musing’s slo-mo progression, Frøkedal‘s foggy vocals, and the glowing
synth waves.

Start dreaming here.

you reach for the repeat button again and again.

Bingo!

ALEX JAMES – British Misfits Full Tilt Ahead On Their New Rollicking Ripper ‘TELL ME’

New striking strokes

4 September 2022

Band: ALEX JAMES
Who: A wheelchair-fronted, high energy
alternative rock band from the North East.

Alex James (frontman): “Music has really helped me to live with Duchenne
Muscular Dystrophy… I create music for fun and to help others, with the aim
of leaving behind a legacy that lasts for generations”

New single: TELL ME

Written by James around the concept that sometimes even when we have everything
we could ever asked for in life, we can still feel unsatisfied and unhappy. The song allows people to question this very concept perfectly with the repeated lyrics “D’ya know what
I mean?
” and catchy lines “Do you know what it’s like?”.

TUTV: Expect a rollicking ripper bucking up all the way. A sterling rocker that
scurries full tilt with steamy swagger pushed by a flat-out rhythm section, storming
guitars – think Black Sabbath‘s Paranoid riff – and James‘ lively vocals. When the sizzling chorus kicks in, it’s jumping up and down time. Tell all your friends about this zinger of a song.

Exuberant score!

Turn Up The Volume’s KNOCKOUT TEAM OF THE MONTH – May 2021

The best of the past month…

Turn Up The Volume‘s 15 Knockout Tracks for May 2021!
A sassy stream of rambling rippers and jagged jackhammers.

‘Racist, Sexist Boy’ by THE LINDA LINDAS (Half Asian / Half Latinx)
Young kids standing up and making a sharp-cutting, alarming statement
about racism and sexism with a spot-on, in-your-face, loudmouthed punk
anthem à la Bikini Kill. I love it, so should you.

Plug in here…

‘Weather Strike’ by TOM MORELLO and PUSSY RIOT (US/RUSSIA)
Riot, bloody riot, yeah! Morello and Pussy Riot rage against the machine
together with a quiet/Loud/quiet/Loud crossover outburst. I repeat:
riot, bloody riot, yeah.

Press pussy play…

.
‘Finger Pies’ by ANIKA (Berlin)
Electro earworm that moves and grooves from the get-go driven by a rolling
bass riff. Strangely catchy, mysteriously designed with a hypnotic effect. Top!

Catch the vibe…

‘Heat’ by WHISPERING SONS (Belgium)
This is the best Whispering Sons song my ears ever heard. Heat takes you by the throat from the kick-ass kickoff. A haunting and sickly sticky stomper. A 24-carat rocker!

Press play here…

‘Le Jour Du Cobra’ by LA JUNGLE (Belgium)
A bulldozer-feedback intro, repetitive synth-thrills, glowing guitars, freakish voices and a thunderous pace all rolled into one mad-as-a-hatter Kraut-noise escapade making your mind go dizzy, your heart beating faster and your potency going sky-high. Fuck Viagra,
long live La Jungle!

‘Vendetta’ by ICEAGE (Denmark)
An intoxicating jam with a threatening flow. A first-rate power blow.
From their new, brilliant longplayer Seek, Shelter.

Tune in…

‘Slice Of Pain’ by BLACK INK STAIN (France)
All hell breaks loose from the very start. An obstreperous post-punk sledgehammer with a deafening dose of illegal decibels. Opening missile from their excellent Incidents album.

Here comes the blast…

.
‘Shallow’ by BIG TIME KILL (Boston, MA)
In a normal world, Big Time Kill should be know wide and far. Their massive
wall-of-electro-rock-shock is titanic, overwhelming at times, and served with a
gigantic gusto to blow roofs off dance floors. Shallow is my favorite piece of their staggering new 4-tarck EP Recovery.

Dance around and around…

.
‘Cosmic Fingers’ by PAUL WELLER (UK)
No rest for the Modfather. The last few years his production is impressive and
a couple of weeks ago another LP, Fat Pop hit the streets. Lead-single Cosmic Fingers proves once again that Weller still can rock out like the best. That’s entertainment!

Fire it up, Weller…

‘This Is Not’ by CROWS ON WIRES (Germany)
Sultry synths, punchy percussion, glimmering guitar lines, and vibratory vocals.
Sounds like Sisters of Mercy are back, produced by Bauhaus who listened to Soft
Cell
on repeat. A stunner, indeed!

Get magnetised here…

‘Party’ by LOVE ITOYA (Greek Nigerian)
This feels so good. Upbeat, happy and totally summer. Only Love Itoya‘s second
single but definitely one to start and stop all coming sunlit beach jamborees with.
Yes, the sun shines again. Finally! Post-pandemic hope for the future, right here!

Party time indeed…

‘Joker’ by THE HACIENDAS (Manchester, UK)
The Haciendas rattle their butts off on this new fervent firecracker. They turn up the temperature with electric-powered riffs-hooks-and-licks and a clear-cut chorus. One message for all doubters out there: guitar rock is not dead.

Here‘s why…

‘I Said That You Looked Fine’ by ALEX JAMES (North East England)
This banging belter has an instant effect on your body movements. Expect a steamy stonker that rattles and rolls with swagger and energy. Big guitars, big chorus, big tune. What do you want more? Okay, we agree.

Tune in and start the beat…

‘Carry Me On’ by THE BANKROBBER (Italy)
This new musing feels like a nightly gloaming. Acoustic soul-searching and intimate tenderness. The darksome sorrowfulness of the late great Buckley legends floats
all over this gloomy ballad.

Dim the lights and dream away…

.
‘Odes’ by DEAFDEAFDEAF (Manchester, UK)
A slow-paced meditation driven by Hill‘s poignant vox and puzzling guitar waves.
London’s sharp-knifed engine shame should take DEAFDEAFDEAF on tour with
them. They share the same outspoken edginess and sonic resonance. Bingo!

Press the play button…

.
All together on Spotify

.
See/hear you next month, music junkies…

Five Firecrackers To STAY ON TRACK IN THE WEEKEND!

5 new firecrackers to boost your favorite 48 hours…

The Gathering by FRANK TURNER (UK)
An anti-quarantine anthem that makes your speakers go berserk. A striking stonker inviting us to come together and freak out like we used to do before that nasty virus changed our lives. C’mon, folks, make your move…

It’s Okay To Be Tired by MEENA (Manchester, UK)
This is a hypnotic gem that grows on you with every spin, and I had many (so far). It’s an electrifying jam, both haunting and sticky as first-class glue, bringing Mogwai and Arab Strap to mind, with a Manchester accent that is. The track is from their splendid new EP Can’t See. Press play and get impressed…

.
It’s Not Too Late by THE HACIENDAS (Manchester, UK)
Brit-rock with passion, panache and poignancy. A powerstroke driven by flaming guitars and peppy vocals and a mighty chorus you can sing along at the top of your lungs. Ace!

Weather Strike by Tom Morello and PUSSY RIOT
Riot, bloody riot, yeah! Morello and Pussy Riot rage against the machine together with
a quiet/Loud/quit/Loud crossover hammer blow. I repeat: riot, bloody riot, yeah.

Click ‘Watch on You Tube‘ and bang your head against the wall…

I Said That You Looked Fine by ALEX JAMES (North-East England)
This stomping cracker has an instant effect on your body movements. Expect a steamy ripper that rattles and rolls with swagger and energy. Big guitars, big chorus, big tune.

See/hear you next week, music junkies…
