The Cover Of JETHRO TULL Album ‘THICK AS A BRICK’ – Released 50 Years Ago Today

Band: JETHRO TULL
Who: Legendary British prog-rockers led
by singer-songwriter-flutist Ian Anderson.
The group is still active.

Artwork: Cover of their 5th LP THICK AS A BRICK
that came out 50 years ago today, on 3 March 1972.

The original LP cover was designed as a spoof of a 12-page small-town English newspaper, entitled The St. Cleve Chronicle and Linwell Advertiser, with the typical parochial journalism of local reporting. But the record company thought that the sleeve would be too expensive to produce, but Anderson countered that if a real newspaper could be produced, a parody of one would also be practical.

The main mock article is about a kid called Bostock who was disqualified from a poetry contest. The article claims that although Bostock initially won the contest, the judges’ decision was repealed after protests and threats concerning the offensive nature of the poem, along with the boy’s suspected psychological instability and the fact that he had a baby with his 14-year old girlfriend.

trio from Seatlle (WA), formed in 2014. The three share a love for
Pacific Northwest legends like TAD and Melvins, as well as the unique
sonic density of Helmet, Crowbar, and Whores.

Singer-songwriter ROBERT WYATT released his 7th, praised solo album called SHLEEP
25 years ago this year (November 1997). The LP featured musical friends such as Brian
Eno, Phil Manzanera, Annie Whitehead, Evan Parker, and Paul Weller.

The concept of the illustration on the cover is by Wyatt and his
wife Alfreda Benge, and signed in pencil by both together.

Today: The creepy/alien cover of the late great genius DAVID BOWIE‘s
23rd album HEATHEN and images from the accompanying booklet
released 20 years ago this year (June 2000).

The CD came with a booklet with several striking images.

“It looks to be cropped, black-and-white Renaissance-era group of cherubs
designs that have been destroyed in some ways. The designs represent this
by using the destruction of religious art as a symbol of this renewal or spitting
on the past.”

Cover of the highly praised masterpiece album by J Mascis and Dinosaur Jr.,
titled You’re Living All Over Me. Released 35 years ago this year (December 1987).

The illustration is by Maura Jasper who designed the artwork

Artist: NEIL YOUNG
Artwork: Cover of his 8th LP AMERICAN STARS ‘N BARS,
released 45 years ago this year (May 1977).

The artwork was designed by actor and friend Dean Stockwell (who passed away last year, he was 85), It features Connie Moskos, then the girlfriend of producer David Briggs, with a bottle of Canadian whisky in her hand and an intoxicated Young with his face pressed against the glass floor.
