American singer/actress Laura Branigan scored
a big hit with her 1982 synth-pop take of Gloria.
It was actually her version that connected Olsen
with the song.

Olsen: “I’d heard ‘Gloria’ for the first time at a family Christmas
gathering and was amazed at all the aunts who got up to dance.
I imagined them all dancing and laughing in slow motion, and
that’s when I got the idea to slow the entire song down and try it
out in this way.”

From peppy and uptempo to slow and soothing.

Two golden voices, two great songwriters, two gorgeous ladies finally met
each other in the studio. ANGEL OLSEN and SHARON VAN ETTEN have a
lot in common and admire each other (me too, and when I saw them live,
separately, of course, I fell in love, of course).

Sharon about Angel: “We highway high-fived many times along the way… I finally
got the courage in June of 2020 to reach out to see if she would want to sing together.
I got greedy and quickly sent her a track I had been working on.”

Angel about Sharon: “I’ve met with Sharon here and there throughout the years and have
always felt too shy to ask her what she’s been up to or working on. The song reminded me immediately of getting back to where I started, before music was expected of me, or much
was expected of me, a time that remains pure and real in my heart.”

The magnificent starry-eyed result of the collaboration
is titled LIKE I USED TO. A vocal gem. Made my day.

The second taster from the upcoming box. It’s an enchanting,
strings-symphonic reinterpretation of sad ballad Waving, Smiling
from last year’s Whole New Mess album.

“It’s very me. I will always nosedive into love, and suffering can definitely
come with that. When I hear this version the strings really bring the song
to its necessary bittersweet boiling point,” says Olsen.

Golden Voice ANGEL OLSEN Announces Deluxe Box Set And Shares Taster

Golden voice ANGEL OLSEN comes up on 7 May with a Box Set featuring
her 2019 album All Mirrors and the 2020 full-length Whole New Mess, but
also a bonus LP with remixes, alternate tracks, and a cover of Roxy Music’s
‘More Than This.’

And if this isn’t enough the box also includes a 40-page book with photos
and press articles from when All Mirrors/Whole New Mess were first coming
into focus. The box calls Song Of The Lark And Other Memories and
is limited to 3,000 physical copies. More info here.

An alternate version of Whole New Mess, a song recorded during
the All Mirrors sessions.

Info: The record features nine songs, stripped to the
bone, from her magnificent 2019 album All Mirrors and
two new songs, title track ‘Whole New Mess‘and sensitive
reverie ‘Waving, Smiling’.

Released: 30 August 2020

NME verdict: “Most of these songs appeared in maximalist form on last year’s acclaimed ‘All Mirrors’, but stripped-back versions reveal their true power… Most artists keep their demos to themselves, pulling them out of a dusty box in the attic only when someone at the label suggests they bolt them onto a flashy anniversary release or if the Record Store Day goodie box is looking a bit empty… If ‘All Mirrors’ took you to a lavish, creaky ballroom, then ‘Whole New Mess’ tucks you away in the cupboard under the stairs, the door slammed tightly shut. Olsen had always planned to release the original recordings of the ‘All Mirrors’ songs, but wanted the bolder, louder versions to come to her fans first. “I thought it would be more interesting to see something explosive, and then take a look back to where it started to do it the other way around,” she’s explained of her plans to flip the order in which the albums came out.”
Score: 4/5.

Shivers Down Your Spine With The Gorgeous ANGEL OLSEN Performing New Single Live…

I just can’t get enough of ANGEL OLSEN. Her voice is both divine and real, captivating and heavy-hearted. Only yesterday she shared single ‘WHOLE NEW MESS’. The title track of her new, upcoming album. A chilling ballad.

Yesterday night she played the song live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in a quarantine studio. Her arresting performance is just breathtaking. Shivers down your spine grandeur. And did I already say she’s awesomely gorgeous? An angel, indeed.
