ANOHNI And THE JOHNSONS Have Their New Heart-And-Motown-Soul Moving Album ‘MY BACK WAS A BRIDGE FOR YOU TO CROSS’ Out

8 July 2023

Band: ANOHNI AND THE JOHNSONS
Who: Singer/songwriter/visual artist
formerly named Antony (Hegarty) and
her backing band.

New album: MY BACK WAS A BRIDGE FOR YOU TO CROSS
The 5th longplayer.

Artwork: A portrait of Marsha P. Johnson (1945 – 1992), also known as
Malcolm Michaels Jr., by photographer Alvin Baltrop. She was an American gay
liberation activist and self-identified drag queen. Anohni admired her and met
her only once, at a gay parade in NYC, unfortunately, the day before she died

MOJO (British music monthly): “It’s a record of fierce seriousness, a demand for
engagement as inescapable and immediate as somebody shaking you by the shoulders.”
Score: 8/10.

TUTV: Think Marvin Gaye at its reflecting-and-electrifying soul best. Anohni doesn’t hide that she’s a big fan. The record’s big orchestrations and moody Motown vibes are obvious but don’t get the wrong idea, this is an Anohni record. Both introvert and extrovert, both intimate and open-hearted, both melodramatic and earnest. And her voice still is wholly absorbing. A glorious piece of work.

New album: MY BACK WAS A BRIDGE FOR YOU TO CROSS
The 6th longplayer. Out on July7th.

Artwork: A portrait of Marsha P. Johnson (1945 – 1992), also known as

liberation activist and self-identified drag queen. Anohni admired her and met
her only once, at a gay parade in NYC, unfortunately, the day before she died

Following the lead single, titled It Must Change comes a second new track.
SILVER OF ICE . The song is inspired by some of the last words that Lou Reed,
who worked with Ahohnni on one of her albums and sang with her on several
occasions, said to her before he passed away in 2013.

Anohni: “A friend of mine expressed to me in the final months of his life that the
simplest sensations had begun to feel almost rapturous; a carer had placed a shard
of ice on his tongue one day and it was such a sweet and unbelievable feeling that it
caused him to weep with gratitude. He was a hardcore kind of guy and these moments
were transforming the way he was seeing things. I wrote ‘Sliver of Ice,’ remembering
those words of his.”

Silver Of Ice is a goosebumps love ballad.
ANOHNI’s voice was made for melancholic
musings like this.

Not the single’s artwork (on top) is remarkable,
so is the EYES-catching video clip.

ANOHNI AND THE JOHNSONS – New Album Coming, Hear First Single ‘IT MUST CHANGE’

New striking strokes

18 May 2023

Band: ANOHNI AND THE JOHNSONS
Who: Singer/songwriter/visual artist
formerly named Antony (Hegarty) and
her backing band.

New album: MY BACK WAS A BRIDGE FOR YOU TO CROSS – 6th LP
Out on July7th.

Artwork: A portrait of Marsha P. Johnson(1945 – 1992), also known as
Malcolm Michaels Jr., by photographer Alvin Baltrop. She was an American gay
liberation activist and self-identified drag queen. Anohni admired her and met
her only once, at a gay parade in NYC, unfortunately, the day before she died

ANOHNI: “Iʼve been thinking a lot about Marvin Gayeʼs Whatʼs Going On,” That was a really important touchstone in my mind. Some of these songs respond to global and environmental concerns first voiced in popular music over 50 years ago. I learned with HOPEFULNESS that
I can provide a soundtrack that might fortify people in their work, in their activism, in their dreaming and decision-making. I can sing of an awareness that makes others feel less alone, people for whom the frank articulation of these frightening times is not a source of discomfort but a cause for identification and relief. I want the work to be useful, to help others move with dignity and resilience through these conversations we are now facing.”

The lead single, named IT MUST CHANGE
is a Sade-like soul ballad with Anohni‘s
vulnerable voice in the center.
