COCTEAU TWINS Released Their 6th Album ‘HEAVEN OR LAS VEGAS’ 35 Years Ago Today

Significant longplayers from yesteryear

17 September 2025

Scottish synth-pop trio COCTEAU TWINS, featuring Robin Guthrie (guitars, drum machine), Will Heggie (bass), and Elizabeth Fraser (vocals), active from 1979-1997, released their 6th album HEAVEN OF LAS VEGAS on 17 September 1990, today 35 years ago.

It peaked at number 7 on the UK Albums Chart, becoming the band’s most commercially successful release. Music critics have categorised Heaven or Las Vegas as a dream and ambient pop.

The album carries psychedelic, experimental and electronic textures, especially in its soundscapes. It displays musical evolution, with the music becoming more accessible, warmer, and more inviting.

Regarding the artwork, the band wanted a visual representation that would
capture “the ethereal” The final artwork is a long exposure of Christmas tree
lights against a colour backdrop, with its typography produced by hand on
an acetate overlay.

Rob Morton of The New York Sun described it as “a colorful
swash of Vegas neon swirling against a deep blue and red sky

COCTEAU TWINS – A Vinyl Reissue Of Their Two Final Albums ‘MILK & KISSES’ And ‘FOUR-CALENDER CAFE’ Out Now

15 January 2024

Even after almost 30 years since their farewell, Scottish ethereal dream-pop heroes COCTEAU TWINS, with key members Elizabeth Fraser (vocals) and Robin Guthrie (musical architect), still have a huge following (more than 270,000 followers on FB).

Great news for all these fans. The band’s final two LPs, FOUR-CALENDER CAFE (1993)
and MILK & KISSES (1996) were reissued on vinyl last week.

Info and order details here.

FOUR-CALENDAR CAFE (1993)

It’s their seventh LP. It was originally released on 18 October 1993 on Fontana. The album distinguished itself from the rest of the Twins’ catalogue in two major areas: The sound was much more pop-oriented and less ambient than previous works, and Liz Fraser’s lyrics were much more intelligible than usual. It peaked at #13 on the UK charts.

MILK & KISSES (1996)

Although not intended so at the time, Milk and Kisses, released in March 1996, became
the final album issued by the group. The trio worked separately but effectively – Raymonde would work in the daytime, Guthrie at night, leaving Fraser to add her vocals. Because of the aftershocks of her split with Guthrie, lyrics came easy to her. Although work had begun on a follow-up album the band split up in 1997.

#17 on the UK Charts, #24 in Scotland

COCTEAU TWINS Released Debut Album ‘GARLANDS’ 40 Years Ago Today

10 July 2022

Band: COCTEAU TWINS (Grangemouth, Scotland)
Robin Guthrie (guitars, drum machine), Will Heggie (bass),
and Elizabeth Fraser (vocals)
Active: 1979-1997 / 8 studio LPs

Anniversary album: GARLANDS
Released: 10 July 1982
Score: #14 in the UK

AllMusic said: “Too many of the songs rely on a unified formula that rarely changes;
one need only compare to the multiplicity of styles tried on Head Over Heels to see the difference. As a debut effort, though, Garlands makes its own curious mark, preparing
the band for greater heights.”
Score: 2/5.

TUVT: CT sounded like a Siouxsie and The Banshees cover band on their firstborn.

Robin Guthrie (guitars, drum machine), Will Heggie (bass),
and Elizabeth Fraser (vocals)
Active: 1979-1997

Album: MILK & KISSES – 8th and final LP
Released: 13 March 1996 – 25 years ago today

Pitchfork wrote: “Fraser’s voice and Guthrie’s guitar meet halfway,
both showing up but not showing off. Café’s rage has settled into
turbulence, with Fraser beautifully exhibiting her linguistic filigree
and Guthrie putting on a shoegaze workshop.”
Score: 8/10

Turn Up The Volume: The end of a heavenly era
of starry-eyed shoegaze sparks.
