Cover(s) Of The Week – ‘TAINTED LOVE / BOYS DON’T CRY’ By RED SPOT RHYTHM SECTION

Band: RED SPOT RHYTHM SECTION
Who: A roots rock rhythm section from Chicago

Tracks: Tainted Love / Boy’s Don’t Cry

– TAINTED LOVE –

RSRS speed up the giant 1981 Soft Cell hit (actually written by American songwriter
Ed Cobb in 1964 and recorded by Gloria Jones in the same year, but with no real success),
add some Ska dynamics, and create a summer feel with a glowing 60s Booker T. & the M.G.’s organ sound, while singer Claire Liparulo signs for swinging and sunlit vocals.

Sometimes you feel like you’ve got to run away…

.
– BOYS DON’T CRY –

Here RSRS go for a slowed-down, vintage reggae vibe version of The Cure‘s 1979 blockbuster. It’s a hip-swaying take with a tasty summer 2022 sauce and soulful
vocals by Erthe St. James

Shake your booty, folks…

JULIAN LENNON Covers His Father’s Classic ‘IMAGINE’ For STAND FOR UKRAINE Charity Organisation

6 June 2022

John Lennon‘s oldest son Julian about covering Imagine for the very first time:

“I had always said, that the only time I would ever consider singing “Imagine” would be if it was the ‘End of the World’. The War on Ukraine is an unimaginable tragedy. As a human, and as an artist, I felt compelled to respond in the most significant way I could. The song reflects the light at the end of the tunnel, that we are all hoping for.

In April, he performed the track for the first time (with Nuno Bettencourt on acoustic guitar) as part of the Stand Up For Ukraine campaign event, a global fund-raising effort broadcast from Warsaw, Poland.

Watch here…

Now Julian released his Imagine cover officially with a great portion
of the proceeds going to the Stand For Ukraine charity organisation.

Goosebumps Voice SAM CASEY Impresses With ETTA JAMES Cover

3 May 2022

SAM CASEY is a Toronto-based artist, blessed with a goosebumps voice.

She just shared her cover of the 1967 Etta James classic I’d Rather Go Blind
written by Ellington Jordan and co-credited to Billy Foster and James.

Casey about her cover choice: “My producer, Joe Thompson, and I have always wanted
to cover Etta James’ tune, “I’d Rather Go Blind.” The way James speaks so directly about the struggle of losing someone is such a genuine act. At the time of recording this song and
video, I was going through a challenging time in my life.

It feels so vulnerable to see the results of my raw emotion and struggle that this is almost difficult to watch. As soon as we started filming, the lyrics (and most likely, the fact that I was crying between takes) took everyone to this dark yet loving place where tears were being shed, but there were hugs and kisses floating around all night.”

Here’s the heart-and-soul touching interpretation sending shivers down your spine…

SCREAMING FEMALES Cover Ska Legends THE SELECTER

4 April 2022

New Jersey‘s indie rock force SCREAMING FEMALES decided in about 30 seconds
that they would cover a ska song, one by Coventry (UK) heroes THE SELECTER.

And when you say The Selecter everyone thinks immediately about
their classic hit ON MY RADIO, so did Screaming Females.

Their version sounds like recorded in one lets-have-some-fun take.
It’s frisky and brisky. I dare you to dance to it without falling over
your feet.

Right here, right now…

Wartime Ain’t No Party – THE DEREVOLUTIONS Cover TALKING HEADS

2 March 2022

Boston’s DIY indie duo THE DEREVOLUTIONS loves Talking Heads and hates, as we all do, inhuman and devastating wartimes. Countless anti-war songs were written in history and will still be written as long as war-and-power-greedy lunatics rule the world. To hell with them.

The pair’s take on Life During Wartime is a feverish, jittery
and nerve-wracking nail-biter. Spot-on version!

Love to the Ukraine people. Love to peace. Love to love.

“Heard of a van that is loaded with weapons, Packed up and ready to go”
“The sound of gunfire, off in the distance, I’m getting used to it now”
“This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco, This ain’t no fooling around”
“But I ain’t got no speakers, ain’t got no headphones, Ain’t got no records to play”

Fuck Putin
