Band: CYPRESS HILL (South Gate, California)
Who: Multi-albums-selling rappers
with a great appetite for weed.
Active since 1988 / 9 studio LPs (so far)
Album: CYPRESS HILL – self-titled debut LP
Released: 14 August 1991 – 30 years ago
AllMusic said: “They created a sonic blueprint that would become one
of the most widely copied in hip-hop. In keeping with their promarijuana
stance, Cypress Hill intentionally crafted their music to sound stoned, lots
of slow, lazy beats, fat bass, weird noises, and creepily distant-sounding
samples.” Full review: here. Score: 5/5.
Turn Up The Volume: As Bob Dylan once sang “I would not feel so all alone,
everybody must get stoned.” Cypress Hill‘s debut LP is the ideal soundtrack to
follow Dylan‘s invitation.

With this year’s What You Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down? album, monumental rap rebels PUBLIC ENEMY realized one of their most poignant records in their extensive career.
One of the highlight tracks is GRID. A rant about the whole world being Internet-addicted, featuring their famous wordsmith pals Cypress Hill and funkadelic hero George Clinton . Last October they shared a cool, animated clip (see below) for the roaring ripper.
Communication breakdown it’s a take down
Are you awake now or consumed by a fake clown?
World Wide Web keep the spiders fed
Looking at my feed, trolls everywhere but knowledge supersedes
Yesterday PE dropped another clip for GRID, filmed
with their mates in the desert. Hot stuff, indeed!
Forget the web and shake your hips, folks!
What y’all gonna do?
Uncle Jam’s Army’s in, Public Enemy, Cypress Hill
Let’s do this
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah…

Band: CYPRESS HILL (Los Angeles, US)
Album: BLACK SUNDAY – 2nd longplayer
Released: 20 July 1993 – 25 years ago…
ALL MUSIC wrote: “‘Black Sunday’ made Cypress Hill’s connection to rock & roll more explicit, with its heavy metal-like artwork and noisier, more dissonant samples (including, naturally, stoner icons Black Sabbath). It’s a slightly darker affair than its groundbreaking predecessor, with the threats of violence more urgent and the pot obsession played to the hilt. Black Sunday is overall a consistent, engaging listen, especially the flawless first half or so.”
Score: 4.5/5 – Full review here
TURN UP THE VOLUME says: without a shadow of a doubt their
