DEAD KENNEDYS – Legendary Kamikaze Punks Released Their Debut Album ‘FRESH FRUIT FOR ROTTING VEGETABLES’ 45 Years Ago Today today

Significant longplayers from yesteryear

2 September 2025

Legendary kamikaze punks DEAD KENNEDYS from San Francisco, fronted by sharp-teethed blabbermouth Jello Biafra, released their debut LP, titled FRESH FRUIT FROM ROTTING VEGETABLES today 45 years ago , on 2 September 1980.

It was the only DK longplayer with drummer
Bruce Slesinger and guitarist Carlos Cadona.

The photograph on the front cover, showing several police cars on fire, was shot during the White Riot Nights of May 21, 1979, that resulted from the light sentence given to former San Francisco City Supervisor Dan White for the murder of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.

AllMusic wrote: “A hyper-speed blast of ultra-polemical, left-wing hardcore
punk, and bitingly funny sarcasm, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables stands
as the Dead Kennedys’ signature statement.

As one of the first hardcore albums, it was a galvanizing influence on the musical and attitudinal development of the genre, also helping to kickstart the fertile California scene.
The ragged speed-blur still packs a wallop, and the hooks cribbed from surf and rockabilly
give it a gonzo edge.” Score: 5/5.

Band: DEAD KENNEDYS
Who: Infamous punk dropouts from San Francisco,
fronted by loudmouthed frontman Jello Biafra
Active: 1978–1986, 2001–present

Single: TOO DRUNK TO FUCK
Their 4th one, released in May 1981.
More than 27 million streams
on Spotify.

The song features satirical lyrics by Biafra that paint a trenchant picture
of an outrageous, moronic party, set to a heavy surf rock/garage rock riff
by guitarist East Bay Ray.

It got to #36 in the UK Singles Chart, although it was not stocked in some record
shops because of its provocative title. It was the first UK Top 40 single to include
the word ‘fuck‘ in its title. It was banned from Radio 1 airplay by the BBC.

DEAD KENNEDYS Released Spit And Sneer LP ‘PLASTIC SURGERY DISASTERS’ 40 Years Ago

Back in time

16 November 2022

Band: DEAD KENNEDYS
Who: Legendary political noise turbo from San Francisco
fronted by middle-finger punk Jello Biafra
Active: 1978–1986, 2001–present / (only) 4 LPs

Anniversary LP: PLASTIC SURGERY DISASTERS
Released: 16 November 1982 – 40 years ago

Artwork: The band’s name was superimposed over the black-and-white
photograph “Hands” by photo-journalist Michael Wells. It depicts the emaciated
forearm and hand of a malnourished Ugandan child in the palm of a European
missionary to highlight the horrors of famine in parts of the African continent
during the 1970s and 80s.

AllMusic wrote: “Having proved themselves masters of the quick, vicious smash and bash, on their second full-length album the Kennedys continued in that vein while finding other effective ways to express their all-encompassing message of resistance and satire. Absolutely nobody is safe, whether it’s the more expected targets of conservative society, or those who claim to follow what the Kennedys and punk promised but only ended up acting like idiots. For the most part, though, it’s a well-deserved smackdown of all the jerks the early ’80s produced, set to some fantastic music.” Score: 4.5/5.
