JULIANA HATFIELD Can’t Get ELO Out Of Her Head

20 July 2023

Flamboyant American alt-rocker JULIANA HATFIELD
has been around for a while now, actually since 1986.

The past few years, she showed that she’s a sucker for covering other
(celebrated) artist’s songs. She even made full albums of it. One with
Olivia-Newton John tunes (2018) and one with The Police songs.

And she keeps on doing the same. Her next cover LP is dedicated to melodic pop/rock masters ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA (ELO), led by the tremendous hit-smith Jeff Lynne.

The 10-track LP is out on 17 November. More info here.

After sharing her take on Don’t Bring Me Down we get her version
of the downhearted 1974 ballad CAN’T GET IT OUT OF MY MIND.

She does it with endearment and elegance.

Anniversary LP: THE ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA

miscommunication when trying to contact the UK
record label for the album’s title (idiots!).

Back sleeve

AllMusic: “The initial idea for the spin-off group combining rock and classical
music was Wood’s, not Lynne’s. Wood and Lynne split the songwriting duties on
Electric Light Orchestra, much as they did on late-period Move albums, but it
seems like their visions of what ELO was were widely divergent. Electric Light
Orchestra sounds like nothing either Jeff Lynne or Roy Wood did before or
after, and therein lies its fascination.”
Score: 4/5.
