ELVIS COSTELLO Released His Superb Soul Inspired LP ‘GET HAPPY!!’ 45 Years Ago

Back in time

21 February 2025

This week 45 years ago ELVIS COSTELLO and his ATTRACTIONS released their superb album GET HAPPY!!. Definitely one of his best in my book and still sounding lively, vital and highly entertaining today. It was the fourth Costello LP, the third with the Attractions and a bestseller, reaching #11 in the US and #2 in the UK.

AllMusic wrote: “Get Happy!! bursts with energy and invention, standing
as a testament to how Costello can reinvent the pop encyclopedia from the
past in his own image.”

Turn Up The Volume: This was Costello’s soul and R&B inspired album,
his genial sonic view of Motown‘s canon. Maybe it should be re-released
now so everybody gets happy again in these troubled times.

ELVIS COSTELLO Didn’t Want To Go To CHELSEA 45 Years Ago

5 May 2023

45 years ago (17 March 1978) ELVIS COSTELLO and his Attractions
released their second LP, the fantastic This Year’s Model. One of the
singles was the equally fantastic I DON’T WANT TO GO TO CHELSEA.

A song Costello wrote when he was working as a computer programmer.
Lyrically, it was inspired by the films he had been watching as well as his
childhood trips to Chelsea, London.

Oh, no, it does not move me
Even though I’ve seen the movie
I don’t want to check your pulse
I don’t want nobody else
I don’t want to go to Chelsea

1. Plastic Surgery Disasters by DEAD KENNEDYS

The black-and-white photograph titled ‘Hands’ was taken by Michael Wells. The photo depicts the emaciated forearm and hand of a malnourished Ugandan child in the palm
of a European missionary to highlight the horrors of famine in parts of the African continent during the 1970s and 80s.

2. PETER GABRIEL IV by PETER GABRIEL

Peter Gabriel: “The artwork on album four was something I’d been working on with a sculptor called Malcolm Poynter whose work I thought was really strong; he used to do these things out of very dark heads, and then figures made out of toys soldiers.”
