Last year I discovered Irish artist BAMBIE THUG (what a name), the musical moniker
of Cuntry Ray Robinson – a self-described queer, ‘ouija popstar’, who uses the non-binary personal pronouns they and them – when she released her riveting debut LP Cathexis.

They combine pure pop melodiousness with volcanic electro trash
eruptions. Think Bat For Lashes teaming up with Peaches and Alice Glass.

I only found out a couple of days ago (thanks to my cool wife, ’cause I’ve no idea whatsoever when that yearly ESC occurs) that Bambie Thug qualified themselves
for the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 tomorrow, Saturday
in Malmö, Sweden.

Over the years the Song Contest has turned into one long visual show, nothing
wrong with that, but the music is mostly awful and totally inferior to the special,
eye-catching, effects. A non-stop glam and glitter song contest, without songs.

Bambie Thug are theatrical/visual artists too, but it all make sense because their
striking act matches their notable music perfectly and vice versa. They’ll make jaws
drop with their flabbergasting jackhammer DOOMSDAY BLUE that doubles your
adrenalin production instantly. It’s a razzle-dazzle roller coaster, a wham bloody bam juggernaut, an in-your-face, forth and back, master blaster that swings from crystalline pop to nightmarish industrial synth bombast. Pretty fucking cool.

Also this. Last Tuesday, before the semi-final, Thug said: “I’m pro-Palestine, this is not changing. It’s a heavy year to be in it. I don’t agree with the decision made by the EBU [European Broadcasting Union], but I’m not the EBU, I can’t change their minds.

Musicians and organisations from a number of countries have called for Israel to be suspended over the war in Gaza, with many pointing out that Russia has been disqualified since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Eurovision organisers have resisted calls for Israel’s exclusion, saying the situations in Ukraine and Gaza are different. How so??
