Slow Motion Modus For ANGEL OLSEN When Covering ‘GLORIA’

18 July 2021

Artist: ANGEL OLSEN
New EP: AISLES
A 6-track cover EP of 80s hits
(tracklist below)
Out: 20 August

Taster: GLORIA (not the Van Morrison song)
Original: written and performed by Italian
songster Umberto Tozzi

American singer/actress Laura Branigan scored
a big hit with her 1982 synth-pop take of Gloria.
It was actually her version that connected Olsen
with the song.

Olsen: “I’d heard ‘Gloria’ for the first time at a family Christmas
gathering and was amazed at all the aunts who got up to dance.
I imagined them all dancing and laughing in slow motion, and
that’s when I got the idea to slow the entire song down and try it
out in this way.”

From peppy and uptempo to slow and soothing.

50 Greatest ROLLING STONE Albums Of All Time – No 44 ‘HORSES’ By PATTI SMITH

15 September 2020

Artist: Patti Smith
Album: Horses – debut LP
Released: November 1975 – 45 years ago

Rolling Stone: “From its first defiant line, “Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine,” the opening shot in a bold reinvention of Van Morrison’s Sixties garage-rock classic “Gloria,” Patti Smith’s debut album was a declaration of committed mutiny, a statement of faith in the transfigurative powers of rock & roll. Horses made her the queen of punk before it even really existed, but Smith cared more for the poetry in rock. She sought the visions and passions that connected Keith Richards and Rimbaud – and found them, with the intuitive assistance of a killing band (pianist Richard Sohl, guitarist Lenny Kaye, bassist Ivan Kral and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty) and her friend Robert Mapplethorpe, who shot the stark, beautiful cover portrait.”

“I had a handful of records, but when I was 11 years old, I liked Puccini
as much as Little Richard. They both made sense to me.”

Warming Up For PATTI SMITH’s Concert In Belgium Tonight -Here’s ‘GLORIA’…

Knockouts from the past

5 August 2019

(pic by Turn Up The Volume!)

As PATTI SMITH will play my home country Belgium again tonight I will see her perform for the 5th time in the past 12 years. And every single time was a special event as Smith‘s ardent eagerness and ebullient intensity on stage is always omnipresent. To warm up for tonight my choice goes to a live rendition of the timeless Van Morrison classic ‘GLORIA‘.

A song Smith covered in her own special blistering way on her awesome debut LP Horses, a song which gets always a different forceful dimension when performed as I experienced before. See you tonight, Patti.

Here’s a historic 1979 live rendition from a German gig…
