Wonderful Soul Voice FREDA PAYNE Topped The UK Charts Today 55 Years Ago With ‘BAND OF GOLD’

Top singles from the past

American songstress FREDA PAYNE (now aged 83) scored her
biggest hit with vintage soul classic BAND OF GOLD. It topped
the UK Singles Chart on 21 September 1970, today 55 years ago.
In the US it peaked at #3.

The song was written by former Motown producers
Holland–Dozier–Holland and their musical partner
Ron Dunbar.

It tells the then controversial story of a recently married woman whose husband
is incapable of loving her (even though he tried), resulting in the couple sleeping in separate rooms on their honeymoon, to her dismay. It would appear that the marriage ended in the husband’s abandoning his bride, leaving her with no more than a “band of gold“.
