Showman BAXTER DURY Entertains Belgium At Lokerse Feesten

13 August 2023

Crooner-songsmith BAXTER DURYN (yes, the son of Ian) released his 7th LP,
titled I THOUGHT I WAS BETTER THAN YOU last month. Another vintage late-night
barfly Baxter one, and another one with songs about his relation with his late dad Ian.

Last Tuesday he played at Lokerse Feesten Belgium as part of his current tour.

I missed him performing live for several years, for several reasons but finally it happened, and it was sublime. I expected him to sit, nice and easy, at the piano all the way through the set, singing his stories. Nothing of that. He didn’t stand still for one second, cruising from left to right, putting his jacket on and off, using his scarf as a head-band, and doing some kung-fu moves.

I never thought of Dury as a showman, definitely not a great one. And the music, I hear you
ask? Fabulous. He mixed old and new ones with his monumental voice, more expressive than on record and was assisted by his longtime singer/keyboardist Madeline Hart. for lots of sensual French vocals. Glorious. And as live music goes, also here the decibels were turned up giving the whole show a five-star verdict.

Soulful Sunday With BAXTER DURY And His New Album ‘I THOUGHT I WAS BETTER THAN YOU’

Reveries for the laziest day of the week

18 June 2023

Two weeks ago crooner BAXTER DURY (yes, the son of Ian) released
his new, 7th longplayer, baptized I Thought I Was Better Than You .

Dury about the making of the new LP in an interview with The Book Of Man: “I don’t really have a ritual about songwriting, one thing happens after the other. I found bits of music I liked by me or my son and just sang a story type of thing over the top. Like how you would in a hip hop way. But my songwriting instincts still kick in, so there’s a songwriting landscape to it, those chorus instincts.”

Dury still is a nightdreamer making music for nightdreamers, lonely souls, melancholic people, barflies and all easy-going ears that embrace moony musings like these.

BAXTER DURY – New Album ‘I THOUGHT I WAS BETTER THAN YOU’ Out In June

8 April 2023

BAXTER DURY commincated details of his new album, his 7th.
It’s named I Thought I Was Better Than You and is slated for
release on 2 June via. Pre-order info here.

Press info: “I Thought I Was Better Than You marks a new era for Baxter, and with this
new era comes a new character. “Faux- confrontational,” Baxter calls him. Here, not only is he recounting his childhood, but he’s also reckoning with it. Instead of just swinging at his past blindfolded with a baseball bat, he talks openly about the toxic cocktail of being born into unfortunately fortunate circumstances, with a persuasive surname but no structure or sense of responsibility with which reap the rewards of it. “Really, it’s about being trapped in an awkward place between something you’re actually quite good at, and somebody else’s success.” That ‘somebody else’ being his dad, Ian Dury. As one of the album centrepieces – Shadow – agonisingly puts it: “But no one will get over that you’re someone’s son/Even though you want to be like Frank Ocean/But you don’t sound like him, you sound just like Ian.”
